Email clients cannot send. Receive only sporadically.

High Sierra version 10.13.6

None of my emails in both of my email clients are working correctly. All of this began Sunday morning, October 13, when I turned my computer on.

At first, I called my ISP, thinking the problem might be on their end. We did some troubleshooting and did not fix the problem. I set up Outlook on a Windows laptop that I have and it worked as intended. Right now, my only assumption is that the problem is with my computer itself.

I have six email addresses in my mail clients. None of them are working correctly. None of them will send an email. Some will occasionally receive emails, but others are completely dead.

I have tried all my emails in both the Outlook client and the Mac Mail client. Both are behaving the same way.

The rundown is as follows (all are IMAP unless otherwise noted):

iCloud: Sometimes receives email. Cannot send email.

Work email (MS Exchange): Sometimes receives. Cannot send.

School email (MS Exchange): Cannot receive or send.

Hotmail: Sometimes receives. Cannot send.

Outlook: Sometimes receives. Cannot send.

Yahoo: Cannot receive or send.

Teksavvy (my ISP): Cannot receive or send.

The above problems are identical on both the Outlook client and Mac Mail client. All emails work just fine on my Windows laptop. All emails work fine in web browsers.

I installed a security update (2019-005) on my Mac on October 5.

The only thing I an reasonably sure about is that the problem is not with my ISP or internet connection, which leaves me with a Mac problem.

Can anyone help?

Are you running any Anti-Virus orCleaning Apps?

2nd...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

If still not working...

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2712

System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.

System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.

The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.

If using Wifi, instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.

System Preferences>Network>choose interface>Advanced>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.

System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

Hmmm, it sounds as if you may need to, but...

EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report...

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck.

There is also Malwarebytes...

Some extra info:

  • simpleprojectsearch.plist keeps reappearing and I keep removing it.
  • simpleprojectsearchdaemon.plist keeps reappearing in the list, but when I click "remove," a popup appears stating that it's actually not there after all.
  • I removed Cooliris and the same issue is happening as the daemon.
  • Is there a way to properly refresh Etrecheck so that the above two points don't keep happening?
  • Safari performance is drastically improved.

One more note: About three days ago, all email mysteriously began working again.

I've probably got a lot of junk on my computer that could stand to be removed. What would be the best way to go about identifying useless stuff and getting rid of it? It is high time to clear out the garbage to prevent things like this from happening.

Wow, I never would have figured out all that on my own. Thanks!

To answer two questions:

I do have an anti-virus, but it only runs when I say so, not continuously. I ran it and it came up nothing.

I also recently downloaded an app called "AppCleaner." From what I understand, it's just an uninstaller. I used it to get rid of the Adblock app, which was doing a lot of phantom tasks in the background.

First, as you said, I booted in safe mode and email worked. Upon returning to regular mode, the emails were still not functioning. I ran through all your steps (no lie. I'm not sure what all that was). Nevertheless, everything appears to be working now!

Thanks again very much!

Unfortunately, the news has turned not so good. When I started my computer this morning, everything went back to the way it was before. I checked the settings that you had me change and everything is still changed just as I put them in last night. Nevertheless, the email is not working again.

I do have time machine. Am I going to need to do some sort of restore?

Here's the requested Pastebin: https://pastebin.com/1xdU2RuJ

Seems that I have more background crap going on than I thought. I probably need a good cleanup program, but I'm not really sure which one to trust.

As for the iPad, I had the email problem while I was at work. When I got home, all of it started working again just fine.

Nevertheless, I have restarted my modem/router.

No the Cleanup App I know of are all cruddy.

See how much this improves after running a bit...

That seems to have improved overall performance. :) There's probably other junk in there that could go, like the Kodak printer thingy.

Email is still messed up, though, but having this performance improvement has been helpful regardless.

I've been hesitant to upgrade to Catalina since I don't know what's going to happen to my iTunes library and I wouldn't like to lose my dashboard, but I'm starting to wonder if that's going to be the only way to fix this.

Yikes. I thought I uninstalled Cooliris ages ago. I see from the discussions that it is an insidious little piece of junk.

Current status:

Whenever I start Etrecheck, it says all of the above files are still there, but when I click "remove," it says they are actually gone and the alert disappears. I can't figure out how to refresh Etrecheck so that it stops doing that.

Since removing the Cooliris files, Safari runs quite a bit better. It used to be so slow that I quit using it altogether in favor of Brave and Firefox.

Email is still borked.

I'm actually kinda grateful for the email going bad because I'm now cleaning up a lot of junk that was causing problems that I didn't even know about.
