ADVC 110 connectivity

I have a 2014 MBP & a 2018 Imac. I have bought a Canopus 110 to digitise some old VHS footage & edit it in FCPX. I am successfully achieving this on my MBP by connecting Firewire DV out of the Canopus via a Firewire 400 cable & into a Thunderbolt 2 converter which then plugs into my MBP.

I then bought an Apple Thunderbolt 2 - Thunderbolt 3 converter in order to upload my material to my iMac, which only accepts Thunderbolt 3.

On right clicking "Import media" in FCPX the software detects the connection with the Canopus, but no picture of any kind appears.

When I remove the new connector & return to my MCB all is well again.

I know the obvious answer is the Thunderbolt 2-3 connector doesn't work perhaps in this configuration, but it is odd that video appears at the end of the Thunderbolt 2 converter.

I was wondering if anyone has had similar issues.

Can you create a new Library on an external drive and capture to that using the MacBook Pro then connect the external to the iMac and open the Library?

Other users have had success with the Thunderbolt 2-3 adapter but I have no knowledge of your configuration using the ADVC110.

I cannot think of why that would occur.

Have you confirmed that the TB3 adapter works with other equipment?

It may be a DOOTB (dead out of the box)

Yes, I start a new Library, event & project on my iMac on an external drive, remove it & then plug it in my MBP, I then simply open the library & event & import the media from the Canopus. In fact for my purposes it may well be a better way as there is a large archive to deal with. I propose to simply have a pair of large hard discs which I swap back & forward, one importing media, the other being used for editing. In this way I can continue editing on my iMac whilst the MBP is ingesting.

Having said that it is still annoying that although my iMac (Now Catalina) sees the Canopus it fails to see the output from it. Interestingly my MBP is still on Mojave, I think it would be wise to keep it that way for the moment. Luckily I was able to update both versions of FCPX without having to update the OS on my MBP.

Unfortunately I haven't got any other Mac with a Thunderbolt 3 socket, so I can't test the T2-T3 adaptor in order to make sure its not faulty. Although as I said, FCP sees the ADVC110 as a source of video, but doesn't display the source. I think there is a compatibility issue somewhere, maybe in Catalina itself. Anyway at £41 for the adaptor I think I'll send it back.
