severe weather warnings

Can you please come up with a way for us to set weather apps to bypass "do not disturb" the same way we can with family members? I live in a rural area in North Texas where we don't have sirens, we depend on our phone apps to warn us about severe weather and tornados which often come at night. When I woke up this morning I had a tornado warning alert on my phone which I knew nothing about. There was a major tornado in Dallas which did a lot of damage. Fortunately we didn't get any severe weather at my house this time, but we had a tornado in my neighborhood in the past with no warning.

We as other users in the user-to-user technical support forum cannot come up with anything. You can let Apple know your need at https://apple.com/feedback. Have you enabled Emergency Alerts and Public Safety Alerts in Settings/Notifications (scroll to the bottom). Most municipalities use these carrier-provided flash message services that bypass DND.

After reading through this thread I thought I'd do a little research. I also use DND at night and am interested in receiving severe weather alerts if possible.

I found that iOS now supports the ability for an app to send "Critical Alerts" which bypass DND and the phone's mute button. App developers must apply to Apple for the ability to send them and Apple vets the app to determine if the need is justified. If the app supports them the setting will appear in the app's notification window:

Screen shot above from web page "What Are Critical Alerts on iPhone and iPad, and How Do I Enable Them?" at:

I then tried to find a weather app that supports this alert type and so far have only come up with Carrot Weather (which I don't really like). I haven't installed it to confirm the feature as it requires a subscription. There may be other weather apps that support this or will in the future.

Just thought I'd pass this along in case you want to check out Carrot or search for others.

FWIW. I use the Weather Underground app on my iOS devices for this exact reason. I do receive push notifications for severe weather-related events with it. This app provides alerts from the National Weather Service (for both the U.S. and Canada). I also tie-in my Davis Wx Station data to this app so when I'm away from home, I can still check in on the weather back there.
