Severe battery drain, iOS 13.1.3, iPad Pro

Any suggestions?

I am experiencing severe battery drain, iOS 13.1.3, iPad Pro. In Settings>Battery, Safari is shown to be the biggest drain by far (BY FAR!). Have been going from 100% after unplugging charger to less than 50% in two hours of morning use (between 7:00 and 9:00am). At the rate of drain, will have zero left before noon. I use Safari to read articles/morning news...not watching battery consuming videos (but even if I were, this performance would be atrocious and unacceptable). Have performed all the “fixes” I found listed online thus far: install the latest iOS with its “battery fix,” wait (did so for days!) for app updates to “catch up,” lower screen brightness, turn off background app refresh, close apps (and rebooted), minimize open tabs in Safari (usually only have two open at any one time, but also erased history/data and rebooted), etc. Nothing helps. There is a serious problem and it doesn’t appear to be a setting. Thank you for any suggestions.

Perhaps I am incorrect, however, before updating to to IPadOS 13, I never experienced battery drain when I closed the cover. I could leave it for days and not experience power loss. Now I lose 50% overnight when there is no activity.

I am convinced something has changed, and judging by the large number of other people complaining about the same thing, I think I am correct.

I am having the same problem. Since updating to iOS 13 my iPad (Pro 10.5”) drains about 10% per hour while not being used at all. I take it off the charger fully charged in the morning, and if I take it out of my bag 5 hours later the battery will be down to ~50%! This is nothing like my experience on iOS 12, where it would have drained in the single digits at most. I check the usage in “Battery” in Settings and it shows the continuous downward slope of the drain, but also shows “0 min” usage for each of the hours it was draining. I actually just had my iPad replaced (for other reasons), and the new one behaves exactly the same way. I’ve taken to shutting it off completely, like other people, so if the battery isn’t way down when I go to use it.

And before anyone asks, I have tried multiple hard resets. Reading through some of the other posts, I’m now starting to wonder if my previous iPad (the one that I had replaced) didn’t die because of this issue. It was also having significant battery drain while supposedly asleep (and not being used at all), but eventually when the battery got low it would get stuck in a reboot loop. It started doing that at higher and higher battery percentages until that’s all it would do no matter how much charge. That’s why I had it replaced. While I was in the Apple store, there was a woman having her iPhone replaced for having exactly the same behavior (poor battery life and continuous rebooting).

I turned off “Background App Refresh” (in Settings —> General) and the problem is apparently gone. I took my iPad off the charger this morning, and 7-8 hours later I’m at 97%. I turned background refresh off altogether, for all apps. I previously had it on generally (at the top of the list), and it was also selected “on” for many apps individually. I may try turning it back on just for select apps and see what the result is.

It’s real and it’s easy to find reports on this. Unfortunately I had auto updates on my new iPad Pro, but no issues today so far. I am very concerned as I expected better.

From Forbes:

”Apple iOS 13.2.3 has landed (as I predicted). This is Apple’s seventh rapid-fire update since iOS 13 launched as a bug-ridden mess in September and it delivers important fixes but also frustrates in equal measure and most iPhone owners should steer clear. Here’s what you need to know.” Read more....

I totally agree with you in regards to Steve.  There were plenty of issues under his watch that were poorly addressed or that went totally ignored.  This point is brought up far too often. That is beside the point.

I also understand that this battery drain issue may NOT be widely reported or a common problem on this support forum.  However, many of us that have posted in this thread are experiencing a VERY SIMILAR issue that only started after upgrading to iOS 13.  I really appreciate your willingness to help and I have tried nearly all of your suggested steps without success (short of the full nuclear option - i.e. full wipe without a restore from iOS backup).  However, I feel like you constantly try to MARGINALIZE / MINIMIZE this issue by continually stating it is not a commonly reported issue.  Just because it isn’t common doesn’t mean it isn’t a valid and legitimate concern.  Just because certain side effects of medications aren’t commonly reported, doesn’t mean that the medication is not contributing and/or causing said side effect.

I think most users that post here are making a good faith effort to follow your suggestions in hopes of restoring the basic functionality their iPads had a short time ago.  Even if your suggestions don’t remedy the problem, doesn’t mean the battery issue is not a true and valid concern for many of us here.

I own an iPad Air2 with battery drain problems. It looses at least 10% a day In standby mode after upgrading to iOS 13 (currently 13.2.3) The thing that helped was to turn off Bluetooth in settings then the problem disappears. Funny thing is that I seldom use Bluetooth at all, only for a couple of HomeKit accessories. I already reported this to Apple feedback a week ago so fingers crossed for another update

I experience the same problem. Charged the whole night, get it off the charger in the morning and put in in my bag. By noon it's down to 60% and the battery usage per apps says that 73% of that is by Safari, which I haven't used that time. Software is Up to date (iPadOS 13.2.3) and performed a couple of hard resets. Turned off all the background app refreshes but before iPasOS 13 all of this wasn't an issue.

Here (Ipad Pro 2018) a complete drain of a full battery (with device completely shut of) in 12 hours...

A few days ago updated from 13.2.2. to .3. Hoped the problem would be fixed... Not...

As Sandman said above here:

I check the usage in “Battery” in Settings and it shows the continuous

downward slope of the drain, but also shows “0 min” usage for each of

the hours it was draining.

Already put a message on the Apple support desk...

Hope there will be a solution soon...

Before 13.0 there wasn't any problem. Could lay my Ipad away for 2 weeks and the battery would only have 10% less...

I’m still having the problem. Background refresh OFF, Bluetooth off, all previously-opened apps shut down (in the app switcher). iPad was at 97% when I put it in my bag this morning, and just now took it out, 8 hours later: it’s warm to the touch, battery is at 27%, and “battery” in Settings shows a constant drain of around 10%/hr, with 0% usage (no active apps) showing for each of those hours in the hour-by-hour breakdown.

Hello,

I have posted since IOS 13. IPad battery drain. Many useful suggestions from fellow user’s on attempts to fix. The one that is proving to help in my case is performing a hard reboot after any IOS update. I had to reboot 3 times after the installation of IOS 13. Since I discovered the battery issue. I now get almost the same time on battery as when I first purchased.

I have all turned off all app auto refresh, blue tooth is off unless needed same for geo locate.

screen on auto.

I would like to thank all of you for the assistance, let’s continue to help each other going forward since Apple refuses to acknowledge that IOS 13 has multiple power drain issues.

I had to perform multiple hard reboots to fix, including all of what you have tried.

I now get almost the same performance as I did out of box.

10 hours on stand by and only lost 10%.

Its unfortunate that we need to turn off all the features that make the system user friendly and convenient to extend battery life for more than a couple of hours.

I do normally shut off my I pad if I know I’m not going use it in the next two hours or more.

Isn’t a hard reboot the last step in the update process? I’ve tried single hard reboots after update installs (plus all of the other recommended changes/settings), but not multiple hard reboots. (An aside: I DO appreciate the suggestions and tips...just wish some of them would work.)

Does one hard reboot clear only part of the cobwebs whereas repeated ones swipe away a little bit more each time? What gives with THAT? Anyway, 13.2.3 has NOT corrected the battery drain problem, which started for me with the installation of 13. With version 13, the problem was immediate, noticeable and severe.

I appreciate the comments elsewhere about (paraphrasing) “we wouldn’t be wasting our time here/with Apple if there wasn’t a big problem” and “it’s disappointing/annoying that Apple claims there is no problem.” Just because thousands aren’t reporting the same issue does not mean it is NOT an issue, especially for those of us now anchored to cords and wall plugs. I need my iPad for business, and some locations offer no place to plug in. (But by golly, we now have purple unicorns at our disposal.)
