Severe battery drain, iOS 13.1.3, iPad Pro

Any suggestions?

I am experiencing severe battery drain, iOS 13.1.3, iPad Pro. In Settings>Battery, Safari is shown to be the biggest drain by far (BY FAR!). Have been going from 100% after unplugging charger to less than 50% in two hours of morning use (between 7:00 and 9:00am). At the rate of drain, will have zero left before noon. I use Safari to read articles/morning news...not watching battery consuming videos (but even if I were, this performance would be atrocious and unacceptable). Have performed all the “fixes” I found listed online thus far: install the latest iOS with its “battery fix,” wait (did so for days!) for app updates to “catch up,” lower screen brightness, turn off background app refresh, close apps (and rebooted), minimize open tabs in Safari (usually only have two open at any one time, but also erased history/data and rebooted), etc. Nothing helps. There is a serious problem and it doesn’t appear to be a setting. Thank you for any suggestions.

Perhaps I am incorrect, however, before updating to to IPadOS 13, I never experienced battery drain when I closed the cover. I could leave it for days and not experience power loss. Now I lose 50% overnight when there is no activity.

I am convinced something has changed, and judging by the large number of other people complaining about the same thing, I think I am correct.

Isn’t a hard reboot the last step in the update process? I’ve tried single hard reboots after update installs (plus all of the other recommended changes/settings), but not multiple hard reboots. (An aside: I DO appreciate the suggestions and tips...just wish some of them would work.)

Does one hard reboot clear only part of the cobwebs whereas repeated ones swipe away a little bit more each time? What gives with THAT? Anyway, 13.2.3 has NOT corrected the battery drain problem, which started for me with the installation of 13. With version 13, the problem was immediate, noticeable and severe.

I appreciate the comments elsewhere about (paraphrasing) “we wouldn’t be wasting our time here/with Apple if there wasn’t a big problem” and “it’s disappointing/annoying that Apple claims there is no problem.” Just because thousands aren’t reporting the same issue does not mean it is NOT an issue, especially for those of us now anchored to cords and wall plugs. I need my iPad for business, and some locations offer no place to plug in. (But by golly, we now have purple unicorns at our disposal.)

Add me to the list of users having this problem. I have an iPad Pro 10.5”, iOS 13.2.3, and have seen my battery life plummet since upgrading to iOS 13.X. Today, for example, I have had Safari on screen for just 17 minutes according to the battery tool, yet starting from a full charge I’m already down to 86% on the charge. Best case the battery is lasting 3-4 hours of even light duty use — mostly ebooks, web browsing, and Apple News.

Hello, I had to perform multiple hard reboots plus turn off all app refresh, reset screen brightness, and turn off geo locate to revive the battery’s life.

Geo locate is a big power draw.

I now can get through most of a normal day with out a recharge.

Yes, Apple definitely is dropping the ball with this IOS version and doesn’t seem to care about its customer’s being forced to to choose between a device that can run for hours by only performing minimal tasks or a fully functional multi tasking device that needs a power cord to run at its full potential.

Really can't state that as Apple has been putting out iOS updates pretty often and pretty frequently to fix issues.

It may just take time for Apple to get through all of iPadOS 13 issues.

It would appear that many of the users that signed up for the iPadOS Beta many months, ago, were not regularly reporting bugs and sending data feedback back to Apple to fix these issues before the release date.

That is why Apple is changing its testing methodology now for the next iPadOS 14 release next year.

I think the user beta testing phase of iPadOS 13 failed Apple because many usres downloaded and ran the iPadOS beta just to post videos to tell the world they were/are the first users to run the new iPadOS and really were not helping Apple by submitting regular feedback about all of its bugs/problems/issues.

IPadOS public Beta testers failed Apple on this version of iOS and Apple has been trying to play catch up with all of iPadOS bugs and issues.

So, fixes are coming much more frequently, now, because of this.

A couple of hard resets in and I am cautiously optimistic. Today I have 2 hours of use and still at 86%. No settings changes. Will report back again in a few days.

note that I had to do the reset where you hold down home and sleep buttons for a long time, until the Apple logo reappears. Just a regular shut off and restart did not help.

While “asleep” my iPad loses almost 10% battery life per hour, and reviewing “Battery” in Settings shows no apps and 0 minutes of screen on time during each of those hours. The battery charge graph shows a continuous and constant slope down. I have done a “hard reset” (home button + sleep/wake button) so many times I’ve lost count.

I have put my iPad in my bag in the morning at 100%, and take it out later and it’s warm to the touch and the battery is down by about 10% for each hour it was asleep. Prior to iPadOS 13 it would be down by a few percent if at all.

I initially seemed to have a good result turning background app refresh completely off (universally, for all apps) but even with that the problem came back. Still have the problem if I “close“ all apps (swipe them off in the app switcher).

There is absolutely a background power consumption problem in iPadOS 13 for the 10.5” iPad Pro, if not other models too. In fact, I happened to get an out of warranty replacement 10.5” iPad Pro (for another reason) right after upgrading to iPadOS 13 and both units exhibited the problem.

I am on 13.3 as of last night. I did a backup, cleared data/history, did a hard restart then downloaded and installed 13.3. This morning, while still plugged in, I again cleared data, history and advanced>website data. Did two more hard restarts. Unplugged, dropped from 100% charged to 87% in 30 minutes. The culprit for me...always always always: SAFARI. It’s usually shown as 78% or higher. I’ve turned off everything I could imagine would/could stay active in the background, including some processes I might need. I’ve also performed all remedial actions recommended by others here and elsewhere online. None worked. I noticed when I set my iPad aside this morning but without flipping the cover over the screen, it stayed active (it was displaying a website after a Safari search), even though my Settings say to Autolock after 2 minutes. Sometimes it DOES autolock and darken if I take a long pause in my work. This morning’s experience makes me wonder what else Safari might keep “active” even when not in use and despite settings. I’m very unhappy with the need to either stay tethered by cord or recharge repeatedly during the day.

I have shut down everything I could possibly live without, even Siri which I use a lot, all notifications, location tracking, and push for mail. I had a tech look at it (twice) and turn off anything I missed. Sorry, but If I could have found anything else I would have done it. Now i just keep it plugged in all the time and when I take it anywhere I take an external battery to charge it. I had the tech check the battery too. Battery is at 90% efficiency. It’s an 9.7” iPad Pro two year old this month. Worked perfectly until aprox. two months ago.

As a graphic artist i use it more than i do my laptop, as a sketch pad, as a photo editor, finance, note taking and just about everything. My heartstrings are tied to it. Definitely a problem now.
