Accountsd CPU usage high in macOS Catalina

I have mail open and and my CPU usage is between 111- 300% int he activity monitor. It is extremely slow, and bogs down the rest of my machine. The fan is on constantly. I have attempted to Force Quit, Reindex, Remove Accounts, etc.

Anybody else seeing this?

So I finally figured out the issue.

Mail is sending some data to iCloud. If you notice with your Documents and Desktop folders, Catalina makes it so saving to iCloud is a default. The same goes for Mail settings.

  1. Settings>Apple ID>iCloud Drive (Options>
  2. Uncheck Desktop and Documents folders.
  3. Uncheck Mail

Not only is Mail working as it should, accountsd is using substantially less CPU %.

Anyway, this is what worked for me for now.

Exactly as you wrote. I also deleted everything in that folder. This has been 4-5 mo this of ****. Usually after I apply a fix within a few hours symptoms come back. I have been using Mac mail with no cpu spike for 4 days now without issue. I do really hope this helps all of you. I’ve kept a log of all the fixes I have tried on reddit as well. Just thought I would post my finding here so that a large community could benefit.

For what it's worth, I applied the fix and though it seems to be working generally, I'm still monitoring Activity Monitor and the CPU% for Mail specifically still spikes. As I type this right now it's 152.3% but just a minute or two ago it was 10.7% and I just looked again and it is 60%. So it's vacillating all over the place. That said, it's more usable than it was before but I can't shake that the fluctuations should be as dramatic as they are. And also, for me it's been a Mail issue in Activity Monitor, I've never had any of the other issues with accountsd or suggestd that others have mentioned. Posting now and before doing so looked at Activity Monitor and saw Mail CPU% spike from 4.3% to 66%.....fun.

Thanks for the efforts. I don't show those sandbox errors. I have tried your steps but unfortunately I don't get the same results. I am working with Apple support on this issue providing logs and system diags. Hopefully they found a fix. Using Outlook is a horrible solution. If my iPhone and iPad Pro native mail client can easily handle my 5 Exchange accounts so should my maxed out Mac Book Pro 16".

Like @christian222, I've also followed those aforementioned steps and it's still an issue for me, and might even be slightly worse. I too have been awaiting word back from the Senior Advisor at Apple I got put with also provided logs, etc but I'm still awaiting word back. I could move to Spark as someone said that solved things for them but I on purpose spent the $ I did on the 32 gb memory for the 16 inch MacBook Pro so that I had ample memory to handle everything and am distressed that it's not happening. Once I hear anything back if it helps or solves I'll post.

You seem to have woken up on the wrong side of bed this morning with these 2 posts....

I was merely suggesting that Spark worked great in order to provide an alternative that worked should anyone want it. But per my other post, since I did the steps I indicated before, I have had NO ISSUES since that process and am back using Mail with no issues and still monitor Activity Monitor daily.

Please keep us posted. I had mentioned previously that I submitted logs to an Apple Senior tech and I've frankly never heard back. After following your guidelines on your blog, I'm generally still OK BUT after a few weeks the high CPU spike with Mail started building back up again and it's sporadic yet steadily so. And then goes away. So been trying to work through it as best as I can. But would love a permanent solution or I might lose patience and move to another client. Thanks

Thing is at page 10 none of the big guns with the experience will help you solve *your* unique problem.

If you want technical help start your own thread with the report I suggested.

If you want to add your ***** style comments, feel free. Apple will not read it so it just becomes social media that most of the real help will ignore.

Excuse my layman explanation but I think so. All folders I have are created through apple mail. then I drag emails into those folders. I don't know if this is connected to the RELENTLESS accountsd problem but it is a mail issue and new. In fact I've lost thousands of emails. Not only is the organization of them lost but actual emails are gone! Honestly I just wish I could go back to Mojave when Apple was good. Catalina has wasted so many hours of productive and life. If anyone out there has an ACTUAL work around PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE post it here...

I'm really tired of Apple with this ridiculous OSX Mail CPU hogging issue. I've submitted feedback many times but they don't seem to care (or acknowledge it). What would be great is a) an acknowledgement and then a timeframe on when this will be fixed. Mail is crucial to my work and Catalina Mail slows me down big time.

Does anyone know of a different email client? App Store seems to indicate Spark email is highly rates. Any thoughts?

Thanks!
