Bluetooth audio problems Catalina

I've updated to Catalina and I'm not experiencing a lot of problems, but one problem in particular and it annoys me a lot.

I'm always using Bluetooth headphones or speakers on my Mac to listen to music.

The problem is that the sound to my output device randomly drops to zero. First I thought it lost connection but when I go to Bluetooth Settings it's still there and connected. When I go to Audio settings the device is still there and selected. So I push the volume-up button and the output device instantly changes to internal speakers and the sound is being played through my speakers instead of my Bluetooth connected device. When I look at the Bluetooth Settings again, the headphones are still connected. So it looks like an audio-codec-driver-software-hardware(or whatever it is)-problem instead of an Bluetooth problem. My Bluetooth apple mouse stays connected and keeps working.

The problem, as described above, appears randomly. Sometimes 3 or 4 times spread over the day, sometimes 4 or 5 times within an hour, sometimes 2 times within a minute! Very annoying.

The quickest way to solve the problem ad hoc is to disconnect and connect the Bluetooth device again through the top at Bluetooth settings.

I'm using different devices and each of them have the same problem;

- Apple AirPods 2

- Steelseries Arctis Wireless Pro

- Jbl charge 3

I've already deleted the Bluetooth folder in Library and rebooted my Mac.

I've already forgot the devices and reconnected everything.

I've already turned off and on my Bluetooth on my Mac

I've already turned off my Bluetooth on my phone (thought maybe this caused the problems but.. unfortunately no..)

Is there anyone with the same problems or does anyone has any ideas to fix this extremely annoying problem?

It looks like this problem appeared eversince I've updated my device to Catalina.

Just comment to inform I'm having the same issue as well.

I'm running Catalina 10.15.4 and the problem happens with my Bose QC35 II. The bluetooth still connected, but sound output changed to Internal Speakers. I can see the Bose QC35 II option but doesn't let me change to that audio output. I have no issue with my bluetooth mouse or keyboard (they are not all connected at the same time btw, only headphones and mouse or just the headphones themselves)

It's now a few days later with constant use and I still haven't had a disconnect, even with a magic trackpad and a separate Logitech bluetooth mouse connected. I have had some issues with the mic input volume, sometimes not being able to speak in meetings, but I think that might be due to a specific conferencing app, which might be a little overloaded at the moment. With Microsoft Teams I've had no problems at all.

Having watched quite a few people comment that 10.15.4 resolves the bluetooth disconnection issue, I decided to take the plunge and upgrade to Catalina ... again. Unfortunately I'm experiencing the same as GF95 reported above. After a couple of days the bluetooth audio disconnects are back, but the difference between the original issue and now is that bluetooth audio will reconnect after about 10-20 seconds. Before the reconnect completes audio is being played through the internal speakers.

To be clear, I was experiencing the issue originally reported on this thread, where audio would stop playing through a bluetooth device, although the device was still displayed as connected, and audio would be transferred to the internal speakers. Imho some of the comments on this thread mention issues that are similar but not the same, and it may be that these have been fixed in the 10.15.4 release.

I will be rolling back to Mojave ... again. Glad I took that backup!

I'm running 10.15.4 and I never had a problem until this version, and now it happens ALL the time, usually when using Webex, and both with wired headphones AND the internal Mac audio (the speakers and microphone sometimes just disappear altogether. Could it have anything to do with Webex, or using an HDMI external monitor with speakers (which I never use), or anything else?

I have a problem that seems to be related to this thread. I have a Mac Mini (2014) running Catalina 10.15.4. After the recent (for me) switch from Itunes to Music, when I connect via Bluetooth to a Sony receiver (Model STRDH190) I get a very annoying "squelch" noise at the beginning and end of every song played. This doesn't occur with other sources of music, only my Itunes (now Music) library. I've tried deconnecting, turning off, restarting, all bluetooth devices and have rebooted the computer numerous times. the problem occurs even when the Sony receiver is the only bluetooth connection. I am not a developer so "solutions" that require Apple developer access seem daunting (and unnecessary). Please is there a non-developer fix to this annoying problem?

They solved most issues for the most people. Works like a charm now (compared to 3 years ago for example), no any problems at all (Bose, Sony, Airpods, JBL). But of course it's not for everyone, there are a lot of different Macs and different BT devices. For example I have old Mac mini with BT 4.0 that I won't even use for BT sound, since BT 4.0 is disaster compared to BT 4.2 or especially 5.0.

These discussions are not for Apple support, they are for usual people, like us. I also waited to their reply, but it's not right place to do. The right thing is to write to their feedback form or call them.

I was having a similar problem with my Soundcore Flair. It would connect via Bluetooth, but the sound would not be redirected to the Soundcore speaker. If I did certain "magic" that I have no idea what it was, I could get it to work. Once it started working it usually continued to work, but not always.

Today I connect my Soundcore directly to my MacBook via USB. I have no idea what happened, but now the speaker won't even turn on.

Oh, I suppose it might be important that my battery swelled and I sent it into Apple last month. They upgraded it to Catalina (sadly) and ever since I cannot enumerate al the problems I've been having. I just updated to 10.15.6

I always regret updating OS too soon. No idea why I did this time. I just like the name Catalina I guess. Ever since I did my monitor speakers I use for video editing (and any other bluetooth speakers) judder and just don't work properly. Intensely annoying this isn't exactly new tech. Have tried resetting the bluetooth and all the usual suggested fixes. Desperately needs sorting, sound is rather a large component of a computers uses I find.
