Bluetooth audio problems Catalina

I've updated to Catalina and I'm not experiencing a lot of problems, but one problem in particular and it annoys me a lot.

I'm always using Bluetooth headphones or speakers on my Mac to listen to music.

The problem is that the sound to my output device randomly drops to zero. First I thought it lost connection but when I go to Bluetooth Settings it's still there and connected. When I go to Audio settings the device is still there and selected. So I push the volume-up button and the output device instantly changes to internal speakers and the sound is being played through my speakers instead of my Bluetooth connected device. When I look at the Bluetooth Settings again, the headphones are still connected. So it looks like an audio-codec-driver-software-hardware(or whatever it is)-problem instead of an Bluetooth problem. My Bluetooth apple mouse stays connected and keeps working.

The problem, as described above, appears randomly. Sometimes 3 or 4 times spread over the day, sometimes 4 or 5 times within an hour, sometimes 2 times within a minute! Very annoying.

The quickest way to solve the problem ad hoc is to disconnect and connect the Bluetooth device again through the top at Bluetooth settings.

I'm using different devices and each of them have the same problem;

- Apple AirPods 2

- Steelseries Arctis Wireless Pro

- Jbl charge 3

I've already deleted the Bluetooth folder in Library and rebooted my Mac.

I've already forgot the devices and reconnected everything.

I've already turned off and on my Bluetooth on my Mac

I've already turned off my Bluetooth on my phone (thought maybe this caused the problems but.. unfortunately no..)

Is there anyone with the same problems or does anyone has any ideas to fix this extremely annoying problem?

It looks like this problem appeared eversince I've updated my device to Catalina.

Apple Support suggested undertaking a NVRAM reset (see link below).

I have been testing it since and I haven't experienced anymore issues after an hour (it usually disconnected in less than 5 minutes before this).

Let me know if it works for you guys.

(Don't worry it doesn't erase your data)

A further reply to my reply:

Sound BlasterX Katana official web page states:

Supported Codecs

SBC, AAC

https://us.creative.com/p/speakers/sound-blasterx-katana

Conclusion:

Apple's AAC codec has something wrong with it. Workaround is to force it off and use SBC.

SBC *must* be supported by all audio devices because it is defined in the bluetooth standard.

** I solved this problem perfectly !! **

I suffered the same problem with my macbook pro 2018.

I updated OS version from 15.10.1 to 15.10.3, but it still had problem.

I asked about this to support team, and they said to create new user for desktop.

So, I created a new login user (not apple online account),

and the problem disappeared.

This problem was very annoying and uncomfortable,

so I hope the people who have the same problem would solve this problem with this solution.

Every self help article tells you to reset PRAM/NVRAM and delete the bluetooth plist. This doesn't work even after 10.15.2. Here's what I observed so far: Bluetooth audio will randomly drop, remain connected to the computer but the audio device will be set to the internal speakers and cannot be changed to the bluetooth audio without disconnecting and reconnecting from the device.

Uptime of a bluetooth audio device is anywhere from instantly failing to a half a day. normally it seems to be about 20 minutes or so. After a while audio will stutter on bluetooth which so far i only seem to be able to remedy by rebooting the machine. next time I may try killing the coreaudiod and bluetoothaudiod though.

Audio forgets its volume after every disconnection, usually being set to max volume. Sometimes, bizarrely, it will be set as low as possible while still having some output. Even more bizarre is that if the system update screen is open it will flash that it failed to update at the same time.

System log at time of error is "com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.apple.bluetoothaudiod): Service only ran for 0 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 1 seconds." repeated ad nauseum. coreaudiod also has an error "unable to write all data".

Running a 2014 Macbook Air 6,2. OS Version 10.15.2, but started since 10.15.0.

jmattdb not the *********, but under some load (I have 8 GB memory), for example 3 Chrome windows with 20 tabs each, Slack, Skype, VSCode and during a call in Skype with ScreenSharing, memory can go out of green state and immediately BT sound disconnects. I think OS just unloads BT sound module because it's sitting somewhere in the cache or something like that. Btw, when memory pressure go out from green (there are some levels), it doesn't mean that machine will be very slow yet.

During about last 3 months I had it like 20+ times and after like 10th I started to notice that memory is related to that and it happens everytime. After that I moved some apps out from my macbook to remote Mac and now connecting remotely there, but anyway sometimes I overload memory even now.

d_fuser, I found that in settings for bluetooth they still have EnablePressuredExit set to True (allows to kill bluetooth audio when memory is under pressure). So setting is still there and might be your system under much bigger pressure and kernel kills it anyway. However I tried to take all possible memory and didn't get that problem anymore. Or maybe you have something else. Can you open Console.app application and search for string "bluetooth" right after loosing sound. Maybe we understand what happens for you.

Only what I had mentioned earlier, and this still works for me, I found that the more bluetooth devices I had the more audio issues I faced, so disconnecting my Apple bluetooth trackpad (1st gen) and only having my Apple wireless keyboard, Apple wireless mouse and my BOSE QC 35 II connected via Bluetooth resolved my audio issues, re-connecting the Apple trackpad then causes audio drop outs.

This affects all bluetooth headphones for me, including AirPods Pro. I was on the phone with Apple helpdesk for a total of 6 hours where they pulled 2GB worth of log files from my computer for the engineers to investigate, and they simply told me that after reading through everything, it's a known issue and there's nothing they can do. They hope an OS update in the future will help, but they have basically thrown up their hands for the thousands of us that can't use bluetooth headphones with our macOS devices.
