Unable to sign into Music, Podcast, Books, or TV app within Catalina.

Has anyone else experienced an issue where they were unable to sign into the Music, Podcast, Books, or TV app within Catalina?

I have two Macbook Pros and a Macbook Air (all built within the last two years). The two MBP I was able to easily update to Catalina without any issues. However on my Macbook Air, I am unable to sign into any of those apps above. I was able to sign into my apple id within the system preferences and the app store app. Within those applications, I have tried logging in through a variety of different methods. In Music and Podcast app, I get the following error numbers:

  • Music --> 11556 or 1001
  • Podcast --> 0

On the other applications, nothing would happen whenever I tried to log in. I have even gone through recovery mode and reinstalled the OS, but nothing has fixed the issue.

After some tests, it worked for me (don't know if it is a workaround or it was a coincidence).

The tests I made:

  • Create a new user (well I created several). During the first login skip iCloud login when prompted. After you finally get to "Desktop" go into System Preferences and manually sign into iCloud. After that test login in Music. I tried creating 4-5 users with/without iCloud login during first login and only had success with the users that I didn't login to iCloud when prompted.

If it works for you, you can use one of the users created, or like me, reinstall Catalina, but don't sign into iCloud during installation.

After numerous hours on the Apple chat and phone and two visits to Apple, we have worked out that I need to roll my MacBook back to the last OS. They’ve advised me not to upgrade to Catalina until it has another couple of updates. What a bizarre error on apples part......I can finally use my new macbook and make the most of my free TV +

Thought I'd give you an update on my situation. I have a brand new MacBook Air, that I was unable to sign in to either music or tv on. My MacBook came with Catalina on. I was advised to create a new user account on the MacBook, which did help me to be able to sign in to both music and tv. However, on trying to delete the original username I was unable to successfully remove it from my MacBook. I was shown different error codes. Anyway, after about 8 hours on chat and phone between the two issues, I went in store. They installed Mojave onto my MacBook. I went through the install process, and signed into iTunes successfully. Obviously I was keen to get back onto Catalina, due to free TV + for a year, so today reinstalled Catalina, on installing it, I am successfully logged in. Who knows what the issue is, but I'm glad my new MacBook is now working fully. Hopefully everyone else will get there's running properly, but might be worth a visit to your local store. I'm surprised there isn't more online about this issue. This is about the only thread highlighting the problem.

Thanks for the information! I just heard from another coworker that they had to do the same thing. Hopefully this issue gets on Apple's radar so we can see a fix in the next release. I am right there with other users - I purposefully waited for a few releases in hopes that any initial issues would be resolved at that point.

I have found that if you at least want access to apple music, you can utilize their beta online players - https://beta.music.apple.com

I realized when trying to login to the Books app on my new MacBook Pro, that I could not login. It kept me asking for my Apple ID password indefinitely. I can't login to the TV+ app, to the Podcasts or Music apps. I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with Apple Support..I was instructed to try several things and ultimately to restore MacOS, which didn't do anything. Tried all the instructions from the second rep...nothing. What is odd is that I can login to all these apps using my daughter's Apple ID. Oh, and by the way, my Apple ID works just fine on my iPad...go figure...The last rep mentioned about the problem and recommended to wait for the "fix" that will come in a software update.

Error message from Podcasts app: Something went wrong during authentication. (0)

Same here

Latest Catalina update 10.15.1, and pooof!,

iMac late 2015

Music, TV access gone, can't get music library back, can't connect to account.

Error 11556. I've checked parental controls.

Also have an older MacBook Air 2014, with Catalina 10.15 but NOT the latest update, still OK & can access Music etc normally

Ios devices all OK, can access/buy music/TV etc.

Just my iMac with the latest updates not working.

I did a disk erase & reinstalled everything/ OS/apps with clean downloads - no help.

I run the same Intego protection on iMac & MacBook Air

My iCloud & apple accounts working fine on all other apps & devices

I don't want to waste any more time on this - really seems like an OS bug
