AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

Yes it is happening to me as well!! People say I am muffled and cannot hear me very well. 😡

I paid a lot for these and to have the Pro name there should not be any muffling when using the mic to talk!!! Come on Apple..........

Not sure but might have resolved this issue for me. Made two calls where both people said they could not hear me.

Did two things since and had a successful test call.

I re-paired the iPods like others suggested.

I went into their settings and made only one of the mics active; I chose right only. I am inclined to believe this change is what ‘fixed’ them, assuming they are indeed fixed. I could see having both mics active with noise cancellation on cancelling me!

I love my AirPods. I recommended them to a friend, praising them. She bought them and instantly I felt something was wrong. She was muffled and all “warbly”. I told her I can barely understand her. So she returned them for being faulty. The next pair was the exact same. So I asked how I sounded. I went from AirPods to phone back and forth and she said it was like night and day in clarity. I sounded like that the whole time as well! I did always get a complaint from people that the background noise was way too loud but I ignored that, but it’s actually true. These pros are all defective. The background noise is super high and you sound muffled to the other person. I am stunned that Apple would release such a defective product especially one where the defect is the actual main purpose of it. Like great new boat, it just takes on water lol. I can’t believe they haven’t addressed this. Not to sound like a cliche but I am actually very disappointed.

Hi,

Does anyone have a fix for this yet?

I am on my second pair, I sent the first pair back and purchased another pair a month later.

Both brand new pairs of Airpod Pros have been impossible to be on the phone outdoors. I've gone through the 3 different sound settings which do not make a difference. I've unpaired, repaired, trialled with different iPhones, no result.

My boss uses his for calls when he goes out for a walk and nobody can hear him either!

I may consider sending these back to Apple because I use my wired headphones more, they never run out of battery and people can hear me!!

Hi All,

I noticed on Apple's website that there is a recall on Airpod Pros that are manufactured before October 2020. So I contacted Apple, they took mine in and replaced them. The replacements had glue down the side of one which got inside my case.

And...... the call quality outside is no different. I've unpaired, paired, gone through the sound settings (transparency, off, sound cancelling) turned the right microphone off, left microphone off, set the microphone to automatic.

No difference at all, people can still hear me better on the wired headphones or my first pair of Airpods from 2017.

Anyone in the UK been successful in returning their Airpods to Currys?

I had my first pair of AirPod Pro’s replaced due to a “rattle” in one ear, second pair replaced due to a rattle in the other ear, neither had microphone problems. I’m on my 3rd pair and these ones have exactly the same issue that everyone on this thread is complaining about.

Apple has a major issue with Quality Assurance!

We can all complain till the cows come home on this group. My question is - is anybody from Apple listening or doing anything about it? The call quality is just terrible on the airpod pros and no update till date has fixed it. Something or somebody really needs to get Apple's attention on this mic issue.

My airpod pro's were replaced - but the replacements have not solved the issue.

I've complained to Currys, where I bought mine from. They're 7 months old. I did the Apple recall for Airpods manufactured before Oct 2020, it made no difference.

I did have a pair prior to all of this with the same issue, so 3 pairs in total.

Currys fully refunded me and I am back to using the headphones that came with the phone, perfect sound quality and people can hear me when I am outside. Problem solved.

Fingers crossed this does get resolved, in the meantime I will be looking at other brands... Shame because I love Apple products, this is the only item from Apple that I've had a negative experience with.

Hi,

I was having a similar issue using my Airpods Pro with my iPhone to take phone calls. The start of each of my sentences was muffled and hard for the other person to hear.

I seem to have fixed this by repairing my Airpods Pro (following the guide that came in the box) and setting (settings > Bluetooth > airpods pro 'i') noise cancellation to off and Microphone > always left.

Hope that helps

So I have replied in the past and had my ipod pros replaced TWO TIMES. The first tech told me those produced prior to Oct 2020 were defective. The replacement pair didn't seem to work even though I was told they should be just peachy because they extensively test them. Nope. Defective. They sent me a THIRD pair. Same thing. Same problem. Unusable outside for phone calls. So I gave up. Today, I just got an idea and asked them when my pods were manufactured. Reply: Aug 2020. ARGH! WTF is wrong with Apple??? If they even tell you the ones produced prior to Oct 2020 were defective, why keep giving me the same cr@p over and over. Anyway, I have a fourth pair in transit. Fingers crossed.
