AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

Yes it is happening to me as well!! People say I am muffled and cannot hear me very well. 😡

I paid a lot for these and to have the Pro name there should not be any muffling when using the mic to talk!!! Come on Apple..........

Like many others have stated, the new firmware 4A402 did not fix Apple's known microphone issue in my airpods pro either. Cannot use for phone calls (muffled, mic signal cutting in/out...other people saying "I can't hear what the___your saying!"), great for audio, but I didn't drop $$ for just audio. Performed all "mic fixes", resetting, reconnecting, cleaning, etc. Simply being transparent/honest about this significant, known issue would foster loyalty=money=a happy apple. One pion's opinion is either fix said issue or be honest and offer a minor option/incentive in exchange. Good luck all

I, as many others have the same issue!

My AirPods Pro are bought Jan 2022, hence few days old, and mic quality is very bad.

I did a simple test at home - voice recording while music is on and also vacuum cleaner.

I recorded with AirPods Pro, my old AirPods gen 2 and iPhone 11 pro. Where iPhone 11 pro mic is superior vs the rest, the AirPods gen 2 have at least clear and consistent volume of my voice and I can clearly and easily understand my recording. Where with the AirPods Pro - very bad. Voice is cut, muffed ... all what is written in the 42 pages of complains. Really Useless recording.

I took them to App Store, where they will test and put them in chamber and bla bla... let's see the result. But the test in my home is very easy and comparison vs AirPods gen 2 is more than obvious.

Btw, I've tested almost everything - Forget, re-connect, connect, update audio enhancements via phone like Headphone Accommodations and etc... no result at all :(

I have had this for months, but some calls ok. Yesterday it changed during a call … 🤔

This solved calls: Setting Bluetooth AirPods Pro Microphone. Default is Auto. First set to left, record a 10 second memo. Set to right, record a 10 second memo. Play them back.

My right microphone sounds ok for a few of seconds but then muffles the sound. I could then set to always use the left microphone to fix calls. Transparency mode had sounded a bit wrong for a long time, and this is not fixed by this.

This auto setting can be why some of the other fixes mentioned are temporary/intermittent.

Me too.. Already had two replacement sets. It’s definitely a software issue. When your record a video the quality is so much better. I don’t understand why they don’t fix this. I love them but this really ruins it, I make a lot of phone calls when i’m walking my dog but it’s so annoying, nobody can hear you properly. With voice memos it’s the same..

Alright, someone else mentioned this before and it seams to work, at least for phone calls (haven’t tested out memos yet). Turn off Phone Noice Cancellation in Settings -> Accessibility -> Audio/Visual.

I called with someone twice and they heard me much better and I was riding a bike in the wind! So I really hope this has done the trick.

Yep, same problem for me with AirPods Pro. I'm getting loads of complaints from people on phone calls saying my voice is really muffled. This is for indoor and outside calls. It is so bad I've had to stop using the AirPods Pro for any calls.

I never had any problems with my old standard AirPods.

Apple, please fix this!

I have this issue on my dad's Airpods pro as well. I am constantly on the phone with my Fiance in Australia and he said that he can barely hear me at first when I am talking and then it clears up immediately and he can hear me clearly. I just sent my personal Airpods pro out for repair for this reason and now my dad's Airpods Pro are doing it as well! He says that I sound incredibly muffled then after a second or two of talking, he then says that he can hear me. I am hoping that they can figure out what is going on and fix the issue.

With mine, I noticed that taking out either left or right airpod will instantly fix the issue.

It appears to be a Bluetooth issue to me.

If I remove both from the case at the same time and get the "dong" from both ears at the same time, people usually hear me fine. If I get a "dong" from just 1 ear, then they never hear me correctly.

Putting one away and closing the lid, the pulling it back out again will usually fix it. You just have to go back and forth till it works.

They never used to do this, so it must have been either an iPhone update or a firmware update to the AirPod Pro.

Chiming in with the same issue. I don't make a ton of phone calls, mostly just talking with my mom, and I never had complaints from anyone other than my mom so I just assumed it was something with her phone since she was the only one who complained. However, I've been talking on the phone with my wife the past few days and she's started complaining about it too. I tried a bunch of things like re-pairing, taking them out and putting them in the case then putting them back in my ears, turning off noise cancelation both through Accessibility and the Airpod Pros active noise cancelation, etc etc but nothing has fixed it.

I hadn't paid close attention before but now I think what's happening is it's hearing my dogs bark from the next room and trying to cancel that out, and instead canceling out my voice. It's incredibly aggravating, because although I mostly use my Airpods just to listen to music, YouTube etc, it's annoying to get a phone call and have to scramble to quickly take out my Airpods just to take the call. Especially when I spent like $250 on these and taking calls is literally their job. These were an upgrade from my old regular Airpods because I wanted noise canceling (because barky dogs), but I'm starting to wish I'd just kept my old ones because at least people could hear me.

The Apple Airpod Pro's microphone is such poor quality it is impossible to use the airpods for phone calls. The sound quality for listening to music is fine, but they are useless for anything else because the microphone is jacked up. No amount of pairing, resetting, turning noise canceling on or off, or updating firmware will help. I've tried pairing it with 3 different iPhones and nothing helps. We will have to accept that Apple sold us a very expensive piece of junk and refuses to admit it or make it right.
