AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

I found a way to improve things. I’m using APP 1st generation and have struggled with this for years. When in a call, go to control centre then at the top right select “Mic Mode” and then “Voice Isolation”.

When I did this, the other person had no difficulty hearing me by a busy road where previously I would have cut out when cars passed.

Hope this helps.

Here's what I found. There are two ways to pair/connect the AirPods.

1) As described in the manual where you simply open the lid of the Airpods and bring them close to the iPhone then follow the instructions.

2) Where you go into your Bluetooth settings and search for and pair the Airpods the way you would do other Bluetooth devices.

The same 2 options also apply to subsequent connections after initial pairing.

When I pair or connect using Option 2 above, the telephone quality is awful for the person I'm calling as they hear background noise almost like it has been amplified. I suspect that is because if I connect to my AirPods this way, the noise reduction functionality doesn't work as expected.

When I connect or pair using Option 1, the sound quality is perfect for the person I'm calling and they hear little background noise.

I'm not saying this will help solve your own issues but I thought it might be helpful to share what I've found.

Thanks

Ian

Has anyone talked to Apple directly about this? Do they have any feedback in regards to the microphone performance. Given so many people are experiencing the same thing, I doubt this is a repair issues as it is either a design flaw or most likely a software algorithm issue. I plan on getting in touch with Apple however wanted to see what people have been hearing from them so far...

I am on my Second pair of AirPod Pros because of the call quality. My first pair everyone was saying I sounded muffled and they could not hear me. I called Apple Support and the tech even said I sounded muffled and was having a hard time hearing me. I made an appointment at the Genius bar and they said they had not heard of this before. I switched out my AirPod Pros and still having the same problem. It is definitely worse when you have 'noise cancellation' on, as I have switched mid-call and people said they can hear me a little better when on 'transparency'. Still these are 'Pro' models and I got these for work calls. When I had my original AirPods no one could tell when I was on them.

Please fix this Apple!

I have exactly the same problem and wherever is a bit noisy I can’t use my airpod pro and I had heaps of complaining about my voice as far as I have to use my phone.

its so annoying.

the other problem I have with my airpod pro is when I’m hearing something if voice is high I have noise on my airpod

generally I was so passionate to buy this airpod pro but it frustrated me.

I have to mention that I didn’t have the regular airpod.

My phone and airpods are up-to-date with the latest firmware, however I'm still having the same issue. This morning I was in a coffee shop just to talk to a customer service (for something else). They couldn't hear me, even in transparency mode. I had to remove airpods and talk with the phone itself. So annoying. If we can't use to make phone calls then indicate this when you're advertising the product, JUST SAY THIS IS ONLY FOR LISTENING TO MUSIC, AND PRICE IT ACCORDINGLY!!! THIS IS OBVIOUSLY FALSE ADVERTISING!!! I feel like an idiot, spent £269 for something that cannot be used!!!

Totally frustrated with the mic quality of the Pro’s. Tried again today on several calls and each time, I was told I could not be heard clearly and sounded very distant, so I ended up switching the call to my iPhone. This is NOT ok Apple.

So it seems that these are only good for listening to music. Problem is, that’s not the only reason I bought them. I will be returning these to Best Buy this weekend....

The call quality is awful! Everyone I talk to says “sorry I can’t hear you” or “why do you sound so far away”. $260 USD and people can’t hear me?! That is more expensive that the price to upgrade your iPhone on a 2 year contract back in the day! Also, if you workout good luck! These things constantly have to be re-adjusted in my ears and constantly fall out and roll on the gym floor. Never had more buyers remorse with an Apple product.
