AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

Yes it is happening to me as well!! People say I am muffled and cannot hear me very well. 😡

I paid a lot for these and to have the Pro name there should not be any muffling when using the mic to talk!!! Come on Apple..........

I checked it out and you're absolutely right! When using the AirPod Pro's to record a voice memo on my iPhone, the sound quality was crystal clear. I had the same excellent results when getting directions on Google Maps. I have now tried making calls on 3 different iPhones and a Samsung Note....all with the same result....dismal sound quality when used for phone calls. This is clearly some sort of radio frequency compatibility issue and not a hardware issue. The microphone itself works just fine! Thanks for the info. I have to say.....Apple's conduct in failing to fix this is unconscionable. Perhaps we need to storm our local Apple store! :-)

I tried that and at first I thought you were correct. However I did this test next: I propped up my phone and, with the AirPods in my ears, I walked into another room. The audio deteriorated as I walked away suggesting that even with the AirPods in, when you record a video - the audio is coming through the phone's mic and not the AirPods.

Try it yourself and see if you don't get the same result.

When I try the same test using MoviePro (which allows you to choose a "bluetooth" mic as the input and thus records from the AirPods even when you walk into the other room) the quality is much worse than it was while sitting in front of my phone making a video. It's not quite as bad as when trying to use the AirPods to create a VoiceMemo, but it's still not very good.

This suggests that, when making a video using he camera app, the audio input is coming from the phone's mic (even if you have the AirPods in) - unless you use an app like MoviePro that specifically allows you to get input from a Bluetooth mic.

Try making a series of VoiceMemos using different settings for the AirPods. All of them sound terrible. However if you use the phone's mic, the VoiceMemo sounds great.

I was doubtful but this actually worked for me. I have the AirPods Pro. Was totally ****** off that I paid $250 on some headphones that sound like pure trash . Knockoff headphones from China sounded better.

I was always connecting the traditional way. As described above in method #1

disconnect/ forget the AirPods

set your headphones back in their case

close em

open en back up

bring em close to the unlocked iPhone

the promo pops up

u press the button in the back of the case to connect

and your good to go

the sound went for a 1 to a 7 out of 10

thats a huge difference although not perfect

thanks!!

Now I connect via the Apple way.

From my own experience and all these posts about the Airpods Pro, it seems the best solution at this time is to stop buying the Apple Airpods... and if you purchased them recently, return them!....because Apple is well aware of this problem and chooses not to correct it. I have spent countless hours pairing, unpairing, and re-pairing them on 3 separate iPhones and on a Samsung Note, with the same dismal results. My Airpod 2's work flawlessly and I don't have to try any magic tricks to get them paired. I have about half a dozen cheapo's from Amazon, and while they don't provide the same sound quality as the Airpods, at least the darn things work! And no magic tricks to get THOSE earbuds to pair! I'm an Apple fan and always have been, but I'm totally shocked by Apple's failure to respond and fix this hot little mess.

I been through 3 pairs of AirPods pros, a friend has a pair too and all with the same problem that is mentioned here. I done all the resets and re-pairing, solved nothing. There has been multiple updates and still no fix, weirdly they seem to work fine out of the box but as soon as they update to new firmware, then they break. I don’t get why this issue is not being talked about on YouTube, look how many people have this problem, is no one using this when they are walking down the street? Sitting on a crowded subway?

Airpods Pro for sale!??

These are not very user friendly. Sometimes they work sometimes they don't constantly cutting out. phone calls all sound horrible regardless how I pair them. I have a cheap set of amazon earbuds that work flawlessly for 100$. Seriously Apple?? My household is all Apple products, you'd think these would just play well with it's kind..LOL

I think it might be time for us to vote with our feet. I've purchased Apple products almost from the very beginning. I got the awesome iPod Classic and it still works flawlessly. My first iPhone was the Apple 3G and it's been replaced with one iPhone version after another. I've had 3 or 4 different versions of iPads. Big Fan! Not so much anymore. When a company ignores us in this way, it's time to send a strong message to get their attention. You want our business? Stop behaving like a knock-off company. My regular AirPods that cost just $100 work perfectly. The AirPod Pro's....at double the price...are junk. Yet nobody's listening. I've had a love relationship with Samsung products that eventually shifted to a meh relationship. Maybe it's time to consider Samsung again.

I have the same issue with my Airpods Pro. I've tried to reset and repair, but the issue remains, so I opted to take the device to the apple store. The Tech geek didn't even attempt to test the device before I was told to pay for a new replacement. This issue is clearly a general problem with the AirPods pros and should be recalled, but Apple's cheating customers by asking them to pay for replacements.

Having the same problem

when I use the airpods pro to make a call it’s so bad that other person thinks I’m in a wind tunnel, yet when I pair them with my laptop and use them on a zoom or teams call, or when I do same on my iPad there is no problem

Come on apple, give us a solution or us the solution to ditch the airpods and get another brand???

Jul 20, 2022 8:23 PM in response to Syrcle

I find it surprising apple did nothing for this. But, I have the same issue. Multiple people I know won’t get them due to this issue. So they better address it or they will continue to have people not purchase in the future. I love the ease of pairing and sound but I don’t use mine hardly anymore because the microphone and call quality is so terrible. I won’t be getting AirPods on the future based on my experience.
