AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

Here's what I found. There are two ways to pair/connect the AirPods.

1) As described in the manual where you simply open the lid of the Airpods and bring them close to the iPhone then follow the instructions.

2) Where you go into your Bluetooth settings and search for and pair the Airpods the way you would do other Bluetooth devices.

The same 2 options also apply to subsequent connections after initial pairing.

When I pair or connect using Option 2 above, the telephone quality is awful for the person I'm calling as they hear background noise almost like it has been amplified. I suspect that is because if I connect to my AirPods this way, the noise reduction functionality doesn't work as expected.

When I connect or pair using Option 1, the sound quality is perfect for the person I'm calling and they hear little background noise.

I'm not saying this will help solve your own issues but I thought it might be helpful to share what I've found.

Thanks

Ian

I experience the same thing as you, poor call quality on AirPods Pro in ANC mode in noisy environment. I don't have that issue otherwise when the room is quit silent.

I chatted with Apple Advisor and we end the chat with a support issue number and the conclusion the AirPods Pro should be replaced. When I arrived at the Genius Bar, we did some tests in that noisy environment with my set of AirPods and two other sets of their own. We did the test by recording my voice on the my phone with the Voice Memos app, once with the ANC ON and once with the ANC OFF (Not Transparency, just OFF like regular AirPods). We also did the test with the microphone picking the sound only on the left and then on the right (settings that can be adjusted in the Bluetooth Preferences page for the device - that was to see if one of the two AirPods is not working properly).

Conclusion: The sounds is crappy most of the time with all the 3 pairs (ANC or Not). The voice is muffle cover by an ishhhhing sound.

So replacing the AirPods Pro is not a solution here. The audio microphones have really an issue. Maybe it can be adjusted with some firmware update. I certainly hope.

So just an update on this. I spoke with AppleCare today and they are going to replace my AirPod Pros. We did seem to discover the issue, and it was inside the noise canceling function. When noise cancellation was on it sent all that ambient noise into the microphone somehow. If I turned my setting to off it got better if I went to transparency it improved to first edition AirPod quality. So hopefully it was just an issue with that run but I will let you know after I replace them tonight.

Mine work fine, and I believe it corresponds to which way you paired your Airpods Pro when you first got them. If you pair them the way stated in the included instruction booklet, the microphone works fine. However according to many people, if you pair them via the bluetooth settings of your device, the microphone does not work properly. I don't know why this is the case but I suggest forgetting the Airpods Pro from your device, and re-pairing them, following the instruction booklet carefully.

Hello,

Yes I have this problem as well. I live in Toronto and walk everyday and sometimes like to talk on the phone with people. I would say that "NO", these headphones do not have background noise cancellation for callers.

It's a problem I've taken to the Apple store and they are absolutely clueless about them. I have 2 friends and 2 family members with the same headphone and they report the same issue.

Also, I have had my AirPods replaced now a couple times for warranty issues and this problem still persists.

So either, Apple didn't include a caller noise cancellation feature (which would be odd since this has been on phones and headphones for several years now), or it's some firmware issue that will only be fixed if enough people complain about it.

I’ve had several callers complain about the AirPods sound quality, informing me that they can barely hear me and sound muffled or distorted.

I the possible fix that might work. Carefully clean microphones using a very fine brush (NO WATER). Please note; before I cleaned my pods I tried re-pairing, deselecting noise cancellation in ‘Accessibility’ etc.. use the Voice Memos app each time to confirm the fix.

If this doesn’t work remove both silicone tips, record yourself using Voice Memos. If the sound quality doesn’t improve then you have a problem with the microphones.

  1. Ensure you are updated to iOS 15.1.1.
  2. Settings > Bluetooth > Airpods Pro ”i” icon > disconnect. After disconnecting, select Forget Device.
  3. open the Find My app on iPhone > Devices pane > Airpods Pro > Remove from Account.
  4. Place the Airpods back into the case and connect the case to the charger.
  5. on your iPhone go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
  6. open the lid of the charging case, keep it open with the AirPods inside, and press and hold the button on the charging case. It will flash Amber and then start flashing White.
  7. once flashing white, release the button and attempt the pairing process again to the iPhone.

hope this helps!

These methods fixed this same problem problem try it.

-first find some acetone alcohol, ear cleaning sticks(with cotton tips), soft brush.

-then bring both AirPod Pros and on the bottom of both the earphones clean the small slits and clean carefully with the soft brush to remove unwanted dirts.

-put the cotton tips in some acetone and clean all three mics on both of the earphones; these mics are found on the outer part of the upper side and in the inner part facing the ears and the bottom part on the charging tip terminal.

After all of these cleanings the AirPod pro will be good as new.
