AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

Yes it is happening to me as well!! People say I am muffled and cannot hear me very well. 😡

I paid a lot for these and to have the Pro name there should not be any muffling when using the mic to talk!!! Come on Apple..........

I think you have to be patient and keep returning to the genius bar until you get a pair that works. It took a lot of time but on the second replacement, plus patiently waiting for the firmware upgrade, they are working just fine. Very annoying to have to go through this, but eventually I have something that my callers say sounds great.

I have the same issues. The call quality outside or in louder environments is terrible with background noise being louder than the actual voice. Repairing, setting a dominant side or switching noise cancelling on, off or activating transparency doesn't change anything. I am on firmware 2C54 and hardware version 1.0.0

Totally frustrated with the mic quality of the Pro’s. Tried again today on several calls and each time, I was told I could not be heard clearly and sounded very distant, so I ended up switching the call to my iPhone. This is NOT ok Apple.

So it seems that these are only good for listening to music. Problem is, that’s not the only reason I bought them. I will be returning these to Best Buy this weekend....

The call quality is awful! Everyone I talk to says “sorry I can’t hear you” or “why do you sound so far away”. $260 USD and people can’t hear me?! That is more expensive that the price to upgrade your iPhone on a 2 year contract back in the day! Also, if you workout good luck! These things constantly have to be re-adjusted in my ears and constantly fall out and roll on the gym floor. Never had more buyers remorse with an Apple product.

I posted on here before about this same issue and my frustration about bad call quality. I have been trying multiple things again over the last couple of days. My son also has the Pros, but owns a Android phone (OnePlus 6T) The sound from his phone/air pods is much clearer! I can hear him clearly and do not sound distant. When I try my airpods with his phone, they also sound fine!

This tells me, it has to be a software issue/IOS between the airpods and our iphones, at least that's my theory.

I have a few days window left to return my airpods back to Best Buy. If Apple would acknowledge this issue and tell us they are working on a solution, I would hold off returning them, but as of now I will be making that trip to BB tomorrow. I simply cannot justify spending $250 on airpod "Pros" if they cannot function properly for the main reason i purchased them in the first place.

My friend had the same problems. We tested it on webex and the quality was poor. Dropouts and high pitched squeals.

She re-paired the AirPods as recommended by Apple. While re-pairing, the phone flagged an issue. It said that the tips were too small. She changed to a larger tip. We tested it out on webex and it is much better.

Bottom line: the tip size needed for good mike performance may be larger than the size you feel is comfortable.

I have reported here my problem before and I have changed my AirPods pros 3 times with Apple. They knowledge the issue and say, ah ok, we will exchange for you. Nobody is really taking action. This supposed to be reaching Tim Cook.

Clearly this is a design / engineering error, that the mic does not work well with noise cancellation, specially in loud and noise environments which the system is trying to cancel the noise.

Its a real shame, 250 dollars and I have to switch fast to another earphone every time I have to jump into a call. Its almost like a bad joke !!!

Just bought my AirPods Pro, as a replacement for AirPods Gen2, for better sound quality and improved voice calls. Yes, people can’t hear properly and complain that I sound muffled. Really frustrating as I sold older AirPods for cheap expecting better quality. Will be calling Apple and asking for the resolution.

Apple suggested a factory reset. I think this is more fundamental. Why don’t they admit this is a issue. They need a fix ASAP. I don’t even think when turning the noise cancellation off works when outside. Think it’s all to do with background noise. The software is making that louder and my voice gets drowned out or cuts in and out.
