AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

Yes it is happening to me as well!! People say I am muffled and cannot hear me very well. 😡

I paid a lot for these and to have the Pro name there should not be any muffling when using the mic to talk!!! Come on Apple..........

Very similar experience on my end. - I tested it a few times at home and the mic quality seemed to be OK-ish, but in real life I have a lot of complaints regarding my voice being muffled or cut out (on firmware 2B588 as well as on 2C54).

I wonder if turning in my AirPods Pro and replacing them with a new set might fix the problem, as many people seem to be very happy with the AirPods Pro's mic quality.

I bought two pairs of Airpods pro (December 2019) partly for music, but mainly for making calls. They are absolutely terrible, every call I make the person at the other ends complains that they cant here me, they say the sound is coming and going (cutting in and out) and that it sounds like I am going through a tunnel. It has gotten to the stage where I have to pull over in may car to take a call manually on the phone. I use my phone a lot for business and business clients are saying the same thing, that the sound is terrible. I switched to the second pair to see was it a fault with the first pair and they were just as bad. I brought them back to iConnect (Apple Store) and they said that they have never had any complaints. However I find this strange as there are so many forums out there where people are complaining of the same thing.

I went back to using the original AirPods as they were better, I know its not an issue with my iPhone pro max as the old AirPods and 3 other bluetooth devices are perfect.

Spent one hour online last night with Apple support. Told me we resetting the AirPods should make it better. Reset them to factory settings. When I tried them again today, they were still exactly the same i.e. extremely poor with complaints from the person On the other hand. I also reset my wife’s AirPods tried them and they were the same. While I am a big fan of Apple these have to be The worst products they have ever produced. I have had to go back to my old Plantronics earpiece for making Hands-free calls. Has anybody had any luck returning their AirPods to Apple for replacement for the older model or a refund?

My development team has tried 3 different sets of AirPod Pros. All of them break-up on voice calls. Expectations are met when playing audio. No falloffs, static, or interference. Phone calls do use a different bluetooth codec that when listening to music, but this isn't the issue here.

I have connected all 3 AirPod Pros to iPhone 8 and iPhone XR and all of them met expectation on voice calls. Connect them to iPhone PRO and all phone are useless. Those on calls complained about breaking up and static which is something similar to issues with electromagnetic interference.

Agree these are not acceptable for using on voice calls.

I've noticed that the louder the ambient background noise the worse I sound. I'm wondering if the microphones on the earbuds are not doing a great job of cancelling that noise out. Maybe the noise cancellation is conflicting with the act of trying to block out the ambient noise. Either way, for $250 this shouldn't be something we have to deal with.

I posted earlier that I bought 2 pairs and both were terrible for calls. Last week after an hour or two dealing with apples online help I was booked in to see a main dealer. I brought my two pairs back to the shop for investigation. I collected them a week later, the report said that pair one was perfect and passed every test, pair two actually had a fault in the left ear bud so they replaced it (nothing to do with poor sound quality on calls). I tried both sets again and the problem is still there, I made numerous calls and the people at the other end said the quality was terrible. Why are apple denying that there is a problem. There have been well over 1000 responses on this thread alone from people saying calls are a problem. Next step is consumer protection agency, Ill keep you posted.

I do follow this discussion, as I hope as anyone here, that Apple would some day acknowledge the problem and fix the issue. And here I keep remembering that many responds later, you, the one who created the original discussion, comment as the fact that lately everything is fine, without describing anything you did to fix it. Someday, by some magic, it works.

Sorry, but I don’t buy it.

For everyone else here, the problem is not fixed even after some firmware updates, new subversion of iOS 13.x and multiple repairing and some Genius Bar appointments and multiple AirPods Pro replacements.

What exactly you did to fix the problem? What is the iOS version, firmware version on the AirPods Pro?
