AirPod Pro Microphone Call Quality

Since using the Airpod Pros this week and on calls people have been commenting on how they are having a hard time hearing me. This is something that never happened with my regular AirPods. From what I can gather it sounds like the external noise cancellation or noise reduction algorithm is getting confused with the noise outside and my voice and effectively cutting out or reducing my voice and boosting the background noise.

Are others running into this problem? The common complaint I’m getting when talking on the phone with the Airpod Pro is that the background noise is too loud.

Yes it is happening to me as well!! People say I am muffled and cannot hear me very well. 😡

I paid a lot for these and to have the Pro name there should not be any muffling when using the mic to talk!!! Come on Apple..........

This is exactly what I'm experiencing. Music, voicemails, apps, etc. sound fine, however, anytime I'm on a call it's CONSTANTLY either breaking up and dropping audio or my audio sounds extremely muffled and I have to switch over to my wired headphones that came with the 11 pro max. Using the wired headphones all issues disappear. Maybe it's isolated to the 11 pro?

Same problem here. I recorded a call (using Zoom conference calling, both over phone and over internet) comparing phone mic, regular AirPods, and Pros - Pros were barely audible. Internet quality was better than phone quality but still terrible. I tried all 3 noise cancellation modes and only had minor improvement.

Resetting and re-pairing didn't help. Sending back for a refund. I 'll miss the speaker quality for music, but not worth the price without working mics. I'd have to carry both and switch to old ones if I got a call.

Agree with all, they need to fix it soon and very soon, this thread created 2nd of November and now 12 of February all this time I can't use AirPods Pro for calls only for music and also broken active noise cancelation from 2b588 I'm really not happy that apple can't fix it a lot of time but this this need to be fixed before releasing AirPods Pro 😂😂😂

I went yesterday totally convinced to change for the beats ones but they just allow me to change the left and right pods they said after this new change if the problem persist maybe and just maybe they can check if they would be able to change it ..... I went to yelp and awarded to people saying them NOT to buy AirPods pro .. maybe we can start from there.

So just an update on this. I spoke with AppleCare today and they are going to replace my AirPod Pros. We did seem to discover the issue, and it was inside the noise canceling function. When noise cancellation was on it sent all that ambient noise into the microphone somehow. If I turned my setting to off it got better if I went to transparency it improved to first edition AirPod quality. So hopefully it was just an issue with that run but I will let you know after I replace them tonight.

Gray it’s nice that you are informing us but this supposed not to happen because they created the noise canceling function for one purpose and we paid for it . So even if they change the left and right pods ... the problem it’s not solve it . Jackson it’s right the new ones are more expensive and with the same function so they are going to give us a pods change every time for how long until they decided our warranty it’s not working anymore . I’m a lawyer and this it’s not the way to do things .

I have a big doubt that a replacement unit would do any thing as many others here did replace the unit several time, me included, without any good outcome. It’s the same problem over and over, people at the other end cannot understand you. You are in a tunnel. It’s only works when you are in a quiet room.

After so many month waiting for a solution, I lost fate. I went to the Apple Store today and they reimburse me a Apple Gif Card after I purchase the AirPods Pro at the launch date in October 2019.

it’s fine with me as I do purchase many other Apple products.

I would buy then again when here mostly everyone confirm the problem it’s fixes. I would not hold my breath if I were you.

I had these issues as well and this is embarrassing but make sure you have your AirPods in the right ears. Sounds stupid, I know, but it happens. I thought I was having intermittent microphone issues but I was, in a rush, sometimes putting them in the wrong ears. Unlike the first gen AirPods, the pros, when in the wrong ear, don't feel too different. I was on the phone and happened to look in a mirror and realized my mistake. Hope this helps.

***UPDATE*** issue was caused by an update, which they took down but cannot revert if your pod case updated prior. If you turn noise canceling off the Headset should work normally but if you turn the noise canceling on it amplifies all that cancellation into the microphone somehow. I’m probably not explaining it super well but the short-term fixes turn off the noise canceling feature when you need to make a phone call.
