AirPods Pro Ear Tip Fit Test fail (seal is actually good on both sides)

Ear tip test for me got passes on both ears straight away and multiple times with both medium and large tips on first couple days after I got them

However, since then, the left consistently fails the test when I check despite the left bud being just as sealed as the right one with identical sound as the right whether ANC/transparency/off selected. Medium and large tips have same result - left fails the tip test every time. Tried un-pairing from iPhone, resetting the pods the setting up again, but no different.

My thoughts are a glitch in the code for the ear tip test that goes wrong after a few days and a future release will solve.

Contacted Apple Support yesterday who had agreed they have seen reports of this already. They got me to send them a full set of logs from iPhone for analysis then will get back to me once their engineering team takes a look.

Very happy with product generally and no problem with function or sound quality.

But something to keep an eye on...

I can confirm the Loctite Fun-Tak solution worked for me. I now have the good seal on Fit Test for first time since week 1 of owning them. I had the same deal as a lot of people on here - the fit test worked for the first few weeks, then failing each time I've tried since then. (I've had them about 3 or 4 months now). I picked up some Loctite Fun-Tak and went to work.

It was a trial and error, as I didn't know how much I had to press and pull, I used the magnifier on iPhone to check my progress. I finally ended up with a 100% clean sensor screen, and the fit test started working. What I found best was covering the sensor with the putty, apply some pressure, and quickly rip it off (like a stuck band-aid). I also did some rapid-fire dabbing as well. A combination of those techniques cleared the crud out. (note: don't press so hard that you get putty stuck in the grooves... I did that at first but was able to get it back out).

For a comparison, like I mentioned above, I used the Magnifier tool on iPhone to view a "before" and "after". Note that you can't see any of this with the naked eye, you really need to magnify it. Here's a before and after. (The "before" looks pretty gross - the grooves are filled with dead skin, oil, wax, whatever it is). The "after" shows them very clean. I shower every day and wash my ears out just like everybody else, but this shows it may be time to start Q-Tipping each day as well, to further my effort in keeping the AirPods clean.

Before: Note the crud stuck in the sensor grooves/dimples, and also around the perimeter:

After: Note the entire sensor is clean:

For those of you doing the "suck out the crud" method, after seeing this you may think twice about that now :D

My first pair worked perfectly for about three weeks. Then, the Seal test started to fail and I could hear that there was a loss of sonic quality both in the midrange spectrum and particularly in base. I can hear it immediately. So I brought the suspect Airpod Pros back to an Apple Store and they exchanged them for a new pair. These worked perfectly, also for about three weeks and then the seal started to fail once again. Now, they just don't sound good and there's no position in my ears in which I can get them to seal.

As a next step, I asked Apple to send me a new pair of tips. I got them today. They don't help at all. Exactly the same as before, seal fails and poor sound independent of position in my ears. It's definitely the Airpods themselves that are failing. Or there's some magical gunk in my ears that's causing them to go wonky.

I'm going to try and get yet one more pair from Apple and if those fail, I'm going to do my darndest to get them returned for the purchase price. Their fantastic when they work. Sadly, they don't work for very long.

This works for me too. Cleaning the inward facing mesh grilles gives me back the deep bass, improves NC and allows the ear tip test to pass. So, there is nothing wrong with the seal, fit or size of the tips but just blockage of those grilles. I guess Apple needs to revise the suggestions when there is an ear tip fit test failure: “Adjust, try a different tip and/or clean the mesh grilles”!

Refitting, resizing, and the sucking method doesn't even work at all. I still fail the tests in both ears. Luckily I have these on Apple Care.

I'm definitely chalking up that these first gen Airpod Pros have design flaws. Because if it isn't this issue of ear tip fit tests failing, then it's the other issue in another long support thread about how these pros naturally fall out of your ears a lot. I never had to readjust wireless buds so often in my life and we shouldn't have to resort to band-aid solutions such as stickier airpod cases to get it to work.

They definitely need to improve things with the next model, but sadly I fear I'll probably skip out any next gen and go for the new over the ear Airpods X headphones they are rumored to be making that are like their beats. I prefer over the ear anyway, but just for doing video conference meetings at work I prefer to use something that looks more discrete.

Troll? You kidding me right? Just read the number of comments left by other users who told me the Blu Tack solved their problem! Not a single user has commented that it does not work. Again, I fail to see how your chewing gum "solution" is better than Blu Tack. You said it yourself, you have to chew the gum first, shove that piece of gum into the microphone/speaker mesh, and then wipe it clean with alcohol. With something like Blu Tack, no chewing and wiping is needed. It's your AirPods Pro after all, chew all you want 🤦‍♂️

Now you have your first single-user. Blu Tack does not work for me.

Originally my AirPods Pro consistently passed the ear test. However a few months later, they consistently fail with every single possible combination of ear buds. I have even tried using Q-tips, Blu Tack, and a small bit of alcohol.

Nothing changes the results.

It is very strange that they test quite well for awhile and then suddenly completely fail every test.
