how to watch disney plus on old apple tv

Hello,

I am a bit confused with trying to watch Disney + on an old Apple tv. It makes no sense since my apple tv can support the new Apple TV subscription but not the Disney+. My old Apple TV was working just fine until this and it's pretty unfair. This is so disappointing.

It looks like Disney+ won't be accessible from a 3rd gen Apple TV for the foreseeable future, but you can still AirPlay Disney+ content to your Apple TV. For further instructions: AirPlay video from iOS

Hope this helps,

Fin

That’s great that it works but that doesn’t mean it’s entitled to infinite support nor access to new features or services, and while Netflix is still supported many others are pulling support so that statement is not entirely accurate. Roku devices released around the same time have also been left out so it’s hardly isolated to this device.

Didn’t really answer the question as to why the new Apple TV subscription app works on older devices but not Disney plus app? If Apple can run an update that added Apple TV then they surely can run an additional update for new Disney plus... , no? Is this Disney being a jerk and with holding the app, or Apple trying to push their own streaming avoiding competition? Because if I have to upgrade my hardware it will be a Firestick that purchase.

Yes it does. Apple created a server version of their TV app so that it could be pushed to the 3rd gen. Disney only has an app, and apps cannot run on that model. It would be up to Disney to create a server version. Since that model was discontinued Amazon has been the only other 3rd party provider to push out a server version, while many existing providers have stopped support.

You are free to get another device, though you will note that Apple is still supporting the 7 year old 3rd gen with updates, while Amazon has been known to drop support after only a few years.

Thank you for sharing this information about using the Firefox browser! I, too, was finally able to mirror Disney Plus from my MacBook to my TV by using the Firefox browser thru AirPlay. I had not been able to do it through Safari or Chrome and kept getting the Error Code 83 when mirroring Disney Plus only. I have a 1st generation Apple TV box and and five-year old LG TV. Both do not support Disney Plus. Thanks to your response, I will not need to buy a new Apple TV unit or a new television! I have learned my lesson. From now on, I will not buy TVs over a certain price point because I won't know what future apps it may not support in a few years. As for Apple TV, I read that Apple may phase out the Apple TV units in the near future since TV manufacturers are starting to equip TVs with Apple TV.
