Bootcamp ACPI_Bios_Error Windows 10 installation

Hi all,

I was running Mojave on a Macbook Pro13,2. I had Windows 10 installed for gaming and one day I ran out of power. After reboot and trying to boot into Windows again I got a blue screen ACPI_BIOS_ERROR since then all **** broke loose.

I tried several time to reboot. Nothing.

There are one/two other threads on this board but they did not help me.

This is what I did:

  • Remove Windows Bootcamp and reinstall - no success
  • Use windows 10 (64) 1607, 1809, 1903. 1909 - no success
  • Use windows 8 (64) - no success
  • Reset SMC / VRAM multiple times - no success
  • updating to Catalina (I am now on Catalina) and try all again - no success
  • using diskutil + unetbootin to create a windows boot usb - no success
  • note: I tried several USB windows boot sticks every time I get the ACPI bios error so I have no chance of installing any windows anymore
  • playing around with clover or how this tool os called so somehow patch acpi - no success / not really know what I am doing here
  • mounting EFI disk0s1 no windows folder only APPLE so I even copied one there from somewhere - no success
  • removing filevault and try all again - no success
  • removing SIP by command+r at boot and terminal: csrutil disable then editing the bootcamp info.plist to add supported model via xcode to get 'create bootdisk' option back - no success for acpi error

I can't even get into recovery tools to 'repair' windows via usb boot stick! crazy!

Bootcamp installs windows then on first reboot acpi bios error so it leaves the bootcamp partition but empty as it never gets past that first reboot.

Help?

  • W7 will not work on a 2016 Mac.
  • W8.1 may work, but you will run into driver issues.
  • W10 should work.

At this point, if you get ACPI errors, I suggest running hardware diagnostics and taking it to the nearest Apple Store or AASP.

If the Windows device drivers sent 'bad' commands to the underlying SSD, when losing power, the steps we have tried are not helping diagnose the issue.

Hi Loner,

thanks for your your suggestions.

I backed up via time machine and deleted everything via command+r

then reinstalled catalina (this took forever)

I installed windows via bootcamp + tried via several USB start sticks

No Success! Still always the same error!?

I am desperate - what is going on? It worked before for years why suddenly

I can't install windows anymore...

Please help?

Can you post the output of

diskutil apfs resizeContainer disk0s2 limits

Here is an example...

You have a couple of missing parts, but as long as you can see them, you do not need to post them. Here is an example.

You may want to download Coconut Battery and check the charge retention. If it is below 80%, the battery may be an issue.

Hm are you sure we're looking in the right direction here?

Yes. All indications point to power issues. See https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/drivers/kernel/acpi-driver for reference. Does it make any difference if you connect the power adapter and try to install Windows?

I am thinking it could be Bootcamp no correctly supporting win10 in some way atm?

If Bootcamp installer comes up, then BC is not the issue.

I just wonder why not even when I EFI boot from an external USB stick I can not even get into
Windows recovery etc. It is always immediately ACPI_BIOS_ERROR.

There is an issue with Power-related devices on your Mac.

"If Bootcamp installer comes up, then BC is not the issue."

Not sure it comes up but never completes - I mean I don't know what the thing does - on first reboot, its ACPI BIOS ERROR. Then it leaves the Bootcamp partition there but empty.

Could it be that the switch from HFS+ APFS in newer macbooks could cause this?

Hm I tried installations mostly with the Macbook being plugged in power supply - sometimes without (on battery) - in both cases it is again ACPI BIOS Error showing up.

Do you see the partition selection screen?

If you are able to partition the disk via BCA, then HFS+ vs APFS is not a factor?

Interesting. This is a bit of work, but instead of Windows, are you able to install Ubuntu and verify that it works properly?

No there is a popup where macOS ask me to authorise changes to the computer. I enter my password then the machine restarts. the next thing I see is the Windows icon. Then boom bluescreen ACPI BIOS ERROR.

When I turn the macbook off and plug a windows USB boot stick in on power up, after I select EFI boot, same thing Windows icon for a while then boom ACPI BIOS ERROR and automatic restart.

looks like the partitioning is working only after first reboot bluescreen and restart then it boots into macOS. The Bootcamp partition is still there but empty.

I will try installing ubuntu - then post here.

I found these Kernel extensions installed on my mac with ACPI stuff can I change or modify them in a way to solve the ACPI BIOS ERROR bluescreen on windows install?
