an ssl error has occured and a secure connection to the server cannot be made - Apple Music

This issue has occurred all of a sudden over the past few days. Up until then I have never had a problem with Apple music.

This effects Apple music across all my devices - Mac, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV and is an intermittent issue as it is not happening all the time.

The crux of the matter:

  • Music downloaded to my devices works fine it is only when I try and stream something.
  • Beats 1 radio works.
  • Music over my mobile network works fine
  • Music was streaming fine this morning. This afternoon it has stopped.
  • Yesterday was the same with it working in the morning then the SSL error occurring in the afternoon, it finally resolved itself around 2330 and everything was working again.
  • When I get this error Apps don't download either. I even went to re-enter my credit card details as I am trying everything and that failed.

Things I have tried:

  • Rebooted my router and tried a spare one.
  • Confirmed with my ISP that there is nothing going on at their end.
  • Checked my internet connection against other non Apple services.
  • Made sure there was no VPN interference on any of the devices I am attempting to use.
  • Made sure the Date/Time on my devices is correct.
  • Reset my Apple TV to factory settings.
  • Signed in and out of iCloud/iTunes.
  • Reset my iPad to factory settings.
  • Spent over an hour yesterday talking to Apple who didn't have a clue and blamed my set-up.

This only started occurring since Monday evening after I reset my wife's old iPhone 6s to factory settings to give it a new lease of life. I have no idea if this is related to my problem or just a coincidence.

I'm at my wits end here and ready to unsubscribe and move to a competitor as I really don't have the patience for this - which to me is something going on with Apple authenticating my Apple ID and it is failing only some of the time for some reason. So I am just chancing my arm and seeing if this sounds familiar to anyone in the community and what/if they found a resolution?

Many thanks.

I'm in New Zealand and while it works with my home wifi, I get the SSL error with my MOBILE data (2 degrees).

It's a problem with the ISP but it's more than just one obviously. Something Apple has done to Apple Music has made it stop working with certain ISPs.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. Just a couple things to add:

  • I'm in Australia.
  • Netflix, Prime, Disney + & YouTube all work fine, across all devices. Even the first episode of the Apple TV show 'SEE' works fine.
  • The Spotify app for Apple TV works great with no issues and is my current workaround.
  • I ran a VPN on my Mac using 128 AES and my music started playing and apps were able to update. Can't do that for the Apple TV though and I don't want to run a VPN from the router.
  • I took a look at Console on my Mac when I was trying to get it to play music after I switched the VPN off - this confirms it is an authentication issue.

I can see how Apple would just blame this on interference within my LAN or my ISP but it is so specific to Apple Music and the App store not downloading or updating my purchased Apps, and it is not happening 100% of the time that there has to be something else involved... Right?

I am in NSW Australia, similar issue, ie. cannot get updates on Mac App Store, IOS App Store, Apple News cannot load when on Myrepublic NBN network . Once connected to 4G network, everything works again. Just wondering whether NBN is the common denominator here.

When I tried to get update on my Mac App Store, first try timed out, then this error message

I have the same issue as well.

I’ve also contacted Apple who said that it has to do with my internet provider, and then I contacted my internet provider and they say the problem is with Apple.

I’m not happy at all and am ready to take my iPad to the Apple store and insert it sideways up someone’s *** if the problem isn’t resolved soon.

I’m sick of paying money for services that aren’t provided properly.

I've got the same issue, but also with AppStore updates. This across multiple devices (iPhones, HomePod, Macs)

However, the issue only seems to be affecting it over the local internet link (Telstra NBN).

Telstra cellular works fine though. I too had success with a VPN to get things to work - but that doesn't fix the AppleTVs or HomePod

I'm also in Australia.

I can guarantee its not my network that's the issue. It's further upstream.

I have the same issue. I live in Australia. Nothing to do with WIFI as it’s the same at work and at home and when on 4g. It’s happening on both my iPad and iPhone just this week. I’ve never seen this before and I have had apple phones since 2014! I hope it gets sorted soon as I had Spotify but didn’t like it and don’t want to move back to it. But if this issue persists I’m going to have to.

I am having the same problem as well and I'm currently chatting with Apple.

It's been happening for the last week and sometimes resolves late at night. I have tried everything including a complete restore. For me it affects app downloads, app updates, apple music. Only happens at home on wifi - if I switch wifi off and go to data, everything works fine.

I havnt had a chance to check it out on my iMac at home but quickly this morning Apple Music swirled through the wifi so hopefully this is fixed

but I’m just baffled as to why this actually happens in the first place

the way I look at it is people like my parents for example have iPhone SE’s and if somthing like this happens they have no idea what SSL even means lol it shouldn’t happen to the normal consumer

an ssl error has occured and a secure connection to the server cannot be made - Apple Music
