Apple TV Plus content no longer plays in Dolby Vision

My TV and receiver are Dolby Vision capable, I know this for a fact because I can enable it manually through the Apple TV 4K, but I like to leave the video settings at 4K HDR. Up until a few weeks ago whenever I begin to play See, my TV used to automatically switch to Dolby Vision; however, it doesn't do this anymore and just plays the content in HDR. It seems to be an Apple TV+ plus issue, because when I when play Dolby Vision content through Netflix, my setup would automatically switch to Dolby Vision. Any thoughts?

I believe this might be a side-effect of the issue being discussed in this post where a lot of people had issues with the first few episodes of tv+ shows not displaying correctly in DV. Seems like Apple messed something up in their DV encoding, my guess they’re having to fix it and in the meantime reverting to HDR only. No doubt DV will be back as soon as they’ve fixed and re-rendered everything.

I reported to Apple for support 3x this problem but they called me back and said that nobody else reported such a problem to them and they did not meet such a situation and engineers from Ireland say that everything works well

for me 4k and dolby vision probably only worked for 4 days by Air play 2 and now it does not work, only in hd and without hdr

Poland region, later dolby vision on the English website worked, but now it also doesn't work

I will also report this to Apple and point out this forum. What i have noticed is this: if I set Apple TV to fixed output of Dolby Vision then it also plays “SEE“ in Dolby Vision. But then of course everything is played in „Dolby Vision“ even YouTube and the menus.. the function „Match dynamic range“ should always put out the originally intended format. This worked the first two weeks of November but now it only plays in hdr. Except the show „Dickinson“ which correctly Switches to Dolby Vision as intended. So now I’m stuck setting Apple TV to fixed Dolby Vision output and am not even sure it’s really displaying „SEE“ in Dolby Vision. I’m really not sure it is. Cause when the service launched I was blown away by the amazing picture and lighting. Hence it was pure Dolby Vision for sure! Now it’s probably just HDR being forced to Output as Dolby Vision. It’s just not the same as it was. There sure is something fishy going on around here and I wonder how long it will take Apple to acknowledge and fix it! It was absolutely perfect just after launch. And all messed up now..

I was found the exact same thing. Of course, it’s not true Dolby Vision like you mentioned. If you have your Apple TV set to Dolby Vision but enable match range, it will play See in HDR. If match range is off, it’ll stay in Dolby Vision like you said. But if you push the menu while watching to bring up the show info, the Dolby vision icon won’t be there.

Yes, exactly what I forgot to mention: If forced to Dolby Vision, bringing up the Menu during „SEE“ or „The Morning Show“ the Icon reads „HDR“ and not Dolby Vision like it should and did before. The Quality of the lighting is obviously decreased.

This is 100% an Apple Content Issue.

Doesn’t matter if you have Sony or LG: There is a Problem on Apple’s end and I have to say it’s quite embarrassing for this to happen within the first Month of launch already...

for some time I do not even play in 4k only in HD quality, HDR also does not turn on either dolby vision or dolby atmos, earlier on the day of release and a few days after the release everything worked without comments. Later, there was a situation on the Polish website that did not work and when I logged in to the English website it worked and now it does not work anywhere in any region of the world unless, even the movie that I purchased in 4K played only in HD

Like Zero0_gow3, I have a Roku (Ultra, 2019) and a Fire TV (the box, not the stick). They both used to get HDR10 from Apple TV+ (I use a projector, so no Dolby Vision for me), but now both are giving only SDR from Apple TV+, though Disney+, VUDU, and Amazon Prime Video come through in HDR10.

I hope Apple is monitoring these forums and is aware of this problem - it's not a good way to launch a service for a company that prides itself on "forcing the future."

The same problem here in Spain. While we were watching nicely in DV until last week all the shows and trailers, this option (DV) suddenly disappeared earlier this week, so I can only display in HDR the Following:

The Morning Show.

See

For All Mankind

The elephant queen

I am very disappointed with this fact as it is worse quality than DV, so I expect Apple fix it as soon as possible.

The rest of shows, including Dickinson, The Gosht Writer..., Still in DV!

You’ve completely described what’s going on. I’m experiencing the same issue...called Apple about a week ago and the dude said I wasn’t alone so that made me feel better as it confirmed it was Not my specific equipment that was the issue. He said he’d run with it and notify me when there there’s a fix. I am hoping to see a software update soon as I’m a big fan of Dolby Vision.
