New 16" MacBook Pro - Running Slow

Hi,

I just picked up a new MacBook Pro 16" (Base Model - 9th Gen i7, 16GB RAM, AMD 5300M, 512GB SSD) for my fiancee yesterday from the Apple Store.

I work with MacBook Pro's at my work (repair them, troubleshoot, run software installations and updates), with models ranging from early 2013 Pros to early 2019. However, when we set these up for new users, they are preloaded with a bunch of apps.

Setting up my fiancee's new laptop, we used the migration assistant from Windows to Mac, and moved over her files. When I rearranged them to make them easier for her to find, I noticed that the Mac itself was sluggish. Specifically in opening up different windows, it seemed as though they were stuttering when opening, not the smooth transition I am used to at work. I ran the most recent MacOS updates before proceeding and I'm thinking it has something to do with that? Has anyone else experienced any sluggishness on the most recent version of Catalina? We're still stuck in Mojave at work (can't update until we get all of our security apps up to 64-bit).

Thanks for any input!

Download and run Etrecheck. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

IMPORTANT:

Before running Etrecheck assign Full Disk Access to Etrecheck so that it can get additional information from the Console and log files for the report:

Then we can examine the report and see if we can determine the root of the problem.

Thanks for the advice. For the moment the only thing in the PC is MacOs Catalina itself, so there is not much to optimize (unless I uninstall the OS :-D). When I start installing applications on the system and the storage space is more than 5% of the capacity of the SSD I will consider installing this tool. I will let Apple deal with it as I am using my macBook air 2013, which performs better (at least it works, does not heat up and the keyboard is much better built).

Just a fact: Apple as well as all the good-quality-reputation brands that emerged in the 80's from that and we trusted shifted their focus from "building-good-quality products" to "how-to-increase-quarter-earnings-per-share-figures products" There is so much you can improve an iPhone, to the point iPhone 7 and iPhone 11 are the same thing and all the releases between the 2 are just to keep sales numbers going up to put on the quarterly shareholders reports. This is the name of the game. This macbook pro is just like any other PC in the market with the same specs. They tried to squeeze too much power in a tight box, where the heat generated impairs the components to operate optimally. It is just a design issue, and they probably will come up with another macBook pro-II, or macbook Pro 2020 so we consumers put another $4k to get them do it right this time...

I am waiting to get a reply similar to that... But I think the issue is with the computer design.

Like a car with a huge displacement engine but very inefficient a lot of fuel to run but very low power output...

If I get a reply like wait for an update of OS, I would reply, you give me my money back, and YOU wait for the update and get the system running as it should, then I get you paid again.

The EtreCheck report would answer a great many questions, and may inform about what is causing a slow down. If you purchased that Mac from Apple, there is a 14-day return policy, and 90 days of free phone support.

Hoping that you know better, but installing any anti-virus tool is both futile and a killer of performance on macOS. How much available storage remains after the Windows data migration concluded. Right-cilck on the Macintosh HD icon and select Get Info from the secondary menu.

It was like this out of the box. Resizing windows drags. Load times seem way slower than my previous Macbook Pro 15 from 2015. What is strange is the BlackMagic speed test shows the drive performance near double my 2015 model.

Opening software takes several seconds which on old mac were instant.

There has to be something major here with Catalina. I know I should hold out for the next update but am concerned that my return date is coming quickly. It's pretty unacceptable for a computer of this expense.

Note - installed bootcamp and none of these issues are present in Windows 10. This confirmed to be that it must be the OS. Windows 10 side everything is instant.

I don't see any of the usual suspects in the report.

Log into another user account and see if the problem persists there in Photos. (This tells us if the problem is limited to your user account or is system wide).

Then boot into Safe Mode (Use Safe Mode to isolate issues with your Mac) and reboot normally. Check to see if the performance is any better.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some system cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.

You could also try removing all of the items in the User Login preference pane and launch then only as needed.

Same problem.

I am well aware of my old computers capabilities (2015 model) - and was using design and music software almost all the time for 5 years and the machine still runs well. I had to update because of the keyboard malfunctioning and the 16 inch looked great.

I have double as much hard drive space and double as much RAM and my software is constantly lagging. ALL THE TIME. To the point where some moments I want to punch the screen because it is so frustrating that I am paying so much for a better machine and it runs slower. I just dont understand it. I have done everything imaginable to try and fix the issue. I really think this is a 16" issue. And i think it has something to do with heating because in warmer weather the device is almost unusable. It could also be Catalinia (in which case, it has been 6 months and apple is one of the richest companies in the world, where are the fixes??)

This should be a call back issue, it is unacceptable for such a high price machine. Those who are blaming malware and such are finding excuses for mac losing quality very quickly. I am really saddened by this because i used my final money to buy this machine to make my workflow better - and it has only added stress to my life. I prefer my 2015 model honestly. Was such a beast. I don't think apple will ever beat this laptop.
