Using emojis with smart keyboard, globe doesn't work

I'm hoping someone can help. I've just got a new iPad Pro with a smart keyboard. I have several keyboards installed including Emojis and Smojis. When I press the glob key on the bottom left of the keyboard a little menu pops up briefly on the screen listing my keyboards. However, I can't actually select any of them! Even if I press on the Emoji option nothing happens. I still don't have any emojis on screen to use. How on earth do I select them? Can anybody help please? I currently have to disconnect my keyboard, use the on-screen globe, select my emoji, then go back to the keyboard to continue typing. All help just says 'click the globe'. I know that part but what next?

I understand that removing the keyboard is not practical, I was just wanting to see if the iPad would change keyboards in that fashion. I wouldn't expect that an update would be needed to fix this, since it is not affecting all iPads. Is restarting the iPad the only troubleshooting you have tried? I would next try to create a current backup of the iPad and then restore to that backup and see what happens.

What other keyboards do you have installed? Has the globe button ever worked for changing the keyboards? Did it change after installing a second or additional keyboard? Have you tried removing all keyboards except your language, and then test? If it works, test adding each additional keyboard at a time to see if it breaks?

These are the two things I would recommend trying next. Come back if nothing works.

The keyboards all worked fine but then I got the smart keyboard and that’s when they stopped. The globe button only works when the Smart Keyboard isn’t connected. I’ll try removing them all and adding them back. I confess I’m loathe to do a full restore from backup. I’m fed up of setting everything up from scratch (too much experience of that) and it’s so time consuming. I’ll start with the keyboard suggestion, thanks. 😊

Wait a minute. You say that the globe button only works when the Smart Keyboard isn't connected? Let's go back, which globe button where you referring to originally, the one on the Smart Keyboard? You should not be seeing a keyboard on the screen if you have the Smart Keyboard attached. If you are experiencing a problem with the Smart Keyboard, I would suggest at this point in your explanation rather than the restores, that you make a Genius Bar appointment at the nearest Apple Store to have the Keyboard examined to ensure that it is working correctly. That Smart Keyboard has a warranty as well.

Sorry, I’m not explaining things very well. I’m referring to the globe button on the smart keyboard. If I disconnect it, everything works fine using the on-screen keyboard. As soon as I connect the Smart Keyboard, I can no longer use the emojis. I press the globe button and the little menu with the 4 keyboards appears on my screen. It fades away after a few seconds. If I do tap on one of the 4 displayed keyboards before they fade away, nothing happens. What the Smart Keyboard globe button does do is toggle something so that I can access the third symbol/character on the number keys. For example, the number 3 also has a £ sign above it and a # next to it. Shift+3 always gives me the hashtag but if I press the globe once and then hit shift+3, I get a pound sign.

I hope that gives more clues as to what’s going on. I would love to visit an Apple shop but we live out in the sticks and it would mean an entire morning or afternoon away, time I simply don’t have.

Thank you for your help.

You won’t believe this, but it’s suddenly started to work! I was showing my husband what the problem is and lo and behold it worked. Naturally he now doesn’t believe me. I tried again and again, and it would never work so this is a huge surprise to me. Fingers crossed it stays this way. If it starts happening again then I’ll know it’s the Smart Keyboard for sure! 😊

Thank you so much for all your help.

In that case the globe key is completely switching your keyboard layout. The one which has £ on Shift 3 and # on Option 3 (that's what the printing on your keyboard means) is called "British". When Shift 3 produces #, you are using the layout called "US". Which layout gets used is determined by settings > general > keyboard > keyboards > hardware keyboard.
