Cant remove Icons from desktop

I put some files on my desktop so I could see what to study. Mostly PowerPoints and now that the semester is over I want to delete them. I keep dragging them over to the trash but the keep shooting right back. I have tried the command delete thing but Im pretty new to mac so id there something I need to do before I can delete them? If someone could provide some insight that would be great thanks.
