In short: Pls. give http://maps.google.com/?force=canvas a try.

In detail:

Hm..., I myself experienced the issue today for the first time.

I then updated Safari to 13.0.4 without applying Security Update 2019-007 10.13.6 (as there are frightful reports about upgrade failures).

The problem still persists.

So the problem might be caused by some recent changes within Google Maps itself.

There have been similar reports years ago...

Google Maps recommends using 2D mode when experiencing problems with (now default) 3D mode on one of its Maps help pages at https://support.google.com/maps/answer/3031966?hl=en

2D Mode: This Google Maps version may work better on older or lower performance computers. It doesn’t have 3D images or WebGL, and it uses simple zooming and transitions. Open Maps in 2D Mode.

And yes: A bit dull, but working like a charm :-)

Did manage to get some time at the Genius Bar last night at the store near me here in NYC. As noted by others here, Google Maps works with my Safari (which is the most current version 13.0.4) if I log in as a guest, but not as myself. Also works on Chrome which I didn't have loaded until last night. Is it a setting/preference issue? No. According to the tech who was helping me, the only solution is to erase everything and re-install from backup.

I wasn't prepared to do that last night for this particular issue. After I got home I thought of several questions that I didn't ask. One being what degree of certainty she had that erase/re-install would solve the problem? After all, you're re-migrating the same stuff back onto the hard drive. However, I know nothing, so could be totally off-base. Also, if I upgraded to Mojave or theoretically Catalina could that solve the problem? Or was it a security update across all of these operating systems? (She, btw, had not seen the problem yesterday until me.) Don't know if everyone here with the problem installed the security update and whether or not everyone's running High Sierra. Suspect not all running High Sierra at this point. Would be interested to have some feedback/info on that.

If this problem is extensive enough, I would think they would have to address a fix for the fix. Thus, the wait it out option.

Brendafromhurst -- the 13.0.4 is the latest version of Safari, not the latest operating system. Catalina (the newest os), for instance, is os 10.15.

 Hello all,

The Google Maps Team has just announced (3:58 AM ET 12/20/2019) this bug has been fixed.

All users in this thread ought to now try using Safari (version 13.0.4) with Google Maps and their current Mac OS operating system (versions 10.12.0, up to (but not including) the latest version 10.15.2 ).

Those users who have forced Maps into 2D mode, using the link provided in this thread, should (1) Open the Safari browser (version 13.0.4), then open Google Maps by clicking on this link: http://maps.google.com/?force=webgl .  That will open Maps in 3D imagery viewing mode, an keep it in 3D mode in the future.

Note: 3D imagery is only displayed in Satellite/aerial mode, and can be toggled off and on by tapping on the globe icon at the very top above Pegman. You can test 3D/Earth view by zooming all the way out, and you ought to see the Earth as in the screenshot below.

Do post your success reports, along with the version of Mac OS you are using (that will be helpful).

Should MAPS still not be working with the latest version of Safari, please post the particulars.

Thanks to each of you for your patience!
