You have adware/malware installed. Use  Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac. It may be necessary to run more than one scan.  After scanning a couple of times, restart the computer and test. If necessary, follow the manual instructions.  Do not download any other programs that are listed in the articles.   Malwarebytes uninstall

I spoke with Apple Support as the above answer was correct but may not be sufficient:

Try the following:

  1. Launch System Preferences. System Preferences > Profiles
  2. Remove any profile you did not intend or do not recognize. Hint if its recent (i.e., date corresponds to when the malware took control of your browser) in terms of date and unsigned then remove it
  3. Go back to your browser, select 'Preferences" and hopefully you can not set the homepage to the site of your choice
  4. Look for the magnifying glass in the upper right, i.e., 'spotlight search' and type 'Activity Monitor". Double click to launch and look for a process with "search pulse" and then select this process, then select View from the Activity Monitor and select "Quit" which will kill this running process. The process may be called "https://search.searchpulse.net."
  5. Quit your browser and relaunch and hopefully you will see the search.searchpulse.net removed

I am not running any anti-virus programs. I must have downloaded the search pulse virus. I’ve tried all the steps to remove it. I can not get the homepage to change. The “set to current page is greyed out. I tried the new administration thing and got the same results. I started it in safe mode and it did the same thing. I’m going to try it again. After the second time I was able to at least get to the malewarebytes site. It still stops downloading.
