I’m getting a error message when setting up my child’s iMessage for the first time on an iPod touch

I’m getting a error message when setting up my child’s iMessage for the first time on an iPod touch. The error message is ‘ unable to contact the server try again later’ . What do I need to do ? ( my wifi is already connected- as my emails work) thanks!
