Mail cannot connect gmail accounts when on my home wifi

When I control-click on the account to take the mail account online, I get a popup saying that gmail must verify through browser and to open safari. When I click to open Safari, it gets an error. This only happens when I am on WiFi. This started happening with upgrade to Catalina.

I already had made sure everything was up to date. I found a solution in another post, after submitting this one.

  1. Set Safari as default browser, instead of Firefox.
  2. Deleted the two Gmail accounts from Settings -> Internet Accounts (not the iCloud account).
  3. Unplugged the Ethernet cable and turned on WI-FI connection to my home network.
  4. Opened up Mail on my Mac Book Pro.
  5. Added in each Gmail account one at a time.
  6. Verified each of the access alerts sent to me from Gmail.
  7. Closed and Repened Mail and checked that all accounts were online.
  8. Turned off WI-FI.
  9. Reconnected Ethernet cable.
  10. Opened Mail and and checked that all accounts were online.
  11. Set Firefox back as default browser.

All is working fine, now.

Hello MisterFixit50,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you're having trouble with your Gmail account. I'd be happy to share information that may help.

The first step to take is to complete all available updates for your Mac: How to update the software on your Mac

Also, be sure that Safari is fully updated: Update or reinstall Safari for your computer.

After completing the Safari update, restart your Mac: Log out, sleep, restart, or shut down your Mac.

Take care.
