Mail on mac stuck 'moving messages'

I use Mac Mail for emails, synced with an Exchange account. Ever since the Catalina upgrade, when I move an email from the inbox to other folders, or when I try to delete them, the Mail app gets stuck in 'moving messages' and so I would see the movement or deletion of the message locally, but it will not make the change in the server and the change will not sync to my other devices.

I tried restarting with no success. Also deleting the account from the app and adding it again. This did solve the issue for a day and then the problem returned.

This is a recurring issue. Please help.

I had this very same problem. I was ultimately successful by deleting the "Envelope index" files described here on Computerworld.

After deleting these files, upon the next time you start Mail, you will see a dialog that says the mailboxes need to be rebuilt. After that finishes, all was back to normal for me. Note that I did lose the "stuck" emails that were being moved at the time. In my case, I was moving emails from a non-iCloud account into an iCloud email folder.

One last thing...the article for that link is from 2014, and specifies version "V2" in the path to get to the Envelope Index. This should be "V7" for the latest version of Mail as I write this. Hope it helps.

I have the same problem even though I don't have any Exchange account.

I have two gmail accounts and one iCloud account, if the iCloud account is online, then the "Moving Messages" is constant.

But if the gmail account is online and not the iCloud, then it does not appear.

What do you think?

That sounds very sound and pragmatic. Unfortunately for me, I have had this problem for quite some time. I believe my "look back" period would be difficult to define.

I also notice that my linked devices are not reflecting read/unread or deleted status accurately across an exchange or imap mail account. So I believe the solution is as you describe, I'm not sure how I go about getting to it, though. Perhaps someone else could point to a log or something, figure out what might be the symptom of an offending file?

Thanks for your update, thesefunnycats!

Thank you. This confirms what I have found via painful trial and error. Except the rules part - I have been moving messages off the exchange inbox manually and also via rules. Thank you for that tip.

Am I the only one to find this fiasco an appalling dereliction of duty by Apple? Maybe they should cut back on television programming and put those resources on fixing the products that are the mainstay of their loyal consumer base.

The Apple support warned me of the same risks, however, I have had to delete those files about 2/3 times a week for the past couple of months and can't see any email being lost.

Apple Support recommended me to re-install my computer from scratch, which I did just to see the problem re-occur a month later because I had to recover some mails from my Time machine back-up.

Frankly, it is a problem that Apple could fix if they wanted to but probably want all of us to move to Outlook or Gmail online!

Good luck to everyone!

I have this same issue since the latest Catalina update. I have tried booting up in Safe mode, signing out of the account and in, taking the account offline and going back online, disabling the account. I've seen suggestions for pre-Catalina Mail fixes, but these do not apply and are mostly for IMAP accounts and involve the Send and Trash folders not being assigned.

I did call GoDaddy, which manages the Exchange account, and they report they have heard hundreds of complaints from Apple users and say (not surprisingly) that it is an Apple problem.

So what is the solution?
