"An Error Occurred while Downloading the Updates. (102)" - When attempting to update OSX 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) on a 2013 MBP Retina

I have had this error several times since trying to update a Macbook Pro Retina 15", A1398 from Mountain Lion to the newest software. I read somewhere on these forums that you need to first update to High Sierra, or another, older OS, but it would not let me do this either (I only tried High Sierra).

Additionally, in order to fix the issue, I have erased and then reinstalled the Mountain Lion OS. I am signed in with my Apple ID.

Other issues I am having include, but aren't limited to:

  • Unable to sign into iMessage.
  • When trying to log in to my Apple account via Safari, it says it is not a secure connection. I have the laptop connected to my internet. I am currently typing this up on my other Macbook Pro Retina 15", Mid 2015.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

MacBook Pro 15", macOS 10.14

Hi MeeceIT,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! I see you have an issue upgrading from Mac OS X Mountain Lion, and I'd like to help out.

If you haven't updated to Mac OS X 10.8.5, you'll need to do that first. Download OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.5 (Combo)

Then try to upgrade to OS X El Capitan 10.11, as that is the oldest available download, which is compatible to upgrade to macOS Catalina 10.15 from. The download link is included in this article: How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan

Update so you're on OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 before upgrading to macOS Catalina 10.15. How to upgrade to macOS Catalina

Take care!
