I have a gift card with a balance of $10 left from $50. When I try to redeem the gift card to use the rest of the balance I’m told the code is incorrect and I cannot use the gift card.

iTunes gift cards do not have a leftover balance. When you redeem it, the entire amount adds to the credit balance, and sits there until you use it.
