Macbook Pro camera doesn't work. "No Video".

For some months already, I have been facing a problem where I can't use the Mac built-in camera. It doesn't work with Facetime, Skype and either Photo Booth.

The message that I get after opening Facetime is "No video. FaceTime has not received any video from the connected camera. Restarting your computer may fix this issue". Only green light is blinking every couple of seconds.

I have been using this laptop for 2 months and it doesn't have any damages that could affect the hardware. Camera and other minor problems started in January 2020 after additional Catalina updates.

I have Googled solution for this problem and tried different solutions but none of them didn't work. Here is the list of solutions that I have tried:

  1.  Kill VDCAssistant in Terminal. It didn't work because I even can't find VDCAssistant from Activity Monitor which should control the camera.
  2. Simply restarting my Mac.
  3. Done all software updates.
  4. Run First Aid option in Disk Utility

Could anybody suggest any other solutions that can be done at home buy general user?

Thanks in advance!

Hello, Laurii112.

Sorry to know you're having this problem with your MacBook Pro.

If you haven't rebooted into safe mode anytime recently you should try that to see if it helps. Let the Mac OS do drive directory repair, cache clearing and other misc housekeeping. Often just booting into safe mode and logging in, then immediately rebooting normally will resolve an issue.  You should do this with all your external peripherals disconnected but the keyboard and mouse.

Booting into Safe Mode…

Use safe mode to isolate issues - Apple Support

What Safe mode does:

  • Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  • Loads only required kernel extensions
  • Prevents startup items and login items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts
  • Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Restarting in Safe mode can often eliminate a problem or help identify the cause.

You can verify that you have started in Safe mode by clicking the Apple () menu > About This Mac > System Report. Then find >Software< in the left column and look at >Boot Mode: Safe vs Normal< in the right pane.

Note– starting up in Safe mode could take 10 minutes or more. Be patient.

Does the problem persist while in Safe mode?

Restart your Macintosh and re-evaluate the issue.

See if the hardware is recognized in System Information (?)

>(Option key) System Information>Hardware>Camera

example of recognition, both model and Unique ID:

if not, you have a hardware problem—Take it in

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

Have you tried the suggested fixes that have been already suggested in this topic?

1 - log into another user account, Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac and see if the problem persists. (This tells us if the problem is limited to your user account or is system wide).

2 - boot into Safe Mode (How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support) and check there to see if the problem persists.  Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing some system cache cleaning, volume verifying and directory repairing.

3 - download and install the macOS Catalina 10.15.4 Combo Update and see if that helps.

If you have a backup of your hard drive made just prior to this happening you can revert to that system as described in this Apple document: Revert your Mac to a previous macOS version - Apple. If you have files that are newer than when the problem occurred that you need be sure to backup the drive now so you can restore them after reverting to the earlier system.

That article will walk you through the steps of reinstalling the OS. Make sure you perform a backup before deleting. Once in the console, delete both the main partition and the “Macintosh HD- Data” partition. Both the main and the data partition will be recreated during the recovery/reinstall.

Once the installation is complete, go through the setup and run Migration Assistant which will put all your “stuff” back in place from the backup you made earlier.

This process took me 6 hours as my backup was on a network drive.

Hi, I am getting the same error since yesterday. 2 days ago the camera worked fine, the day after it stopped working showing this error text (after 3/4 seconds of green light on, the one beside the camera):

"FaceTime has not received any video from the connected camera. Restarting your computer may fix this issue."

The Camera seems to be correctly setup:

I called the Apple support team and followed several ways to resolve it without success""

  • Run diagnostics -> the camera seems to be correctly setup
  • Cancel the PRAM -> Same issue
  • Trying in the safe mode boot -> Same issue
  • Create a new user profile -> Same issue
  • Terminal, “sudo killall VDCAssistant” -> Same issue
  • Reinstall Catalina -> Same issue

It is really disappointing and, in this period, really frustrating. I owned several Apple/MS based laptops and never experienced an issue like this. Basically it looks like the camera is correctly setup but is not working.

I have read read several posts and I am quite sure this is a software issue. How’s possible that Apple is not releasing an official communication?

Now I have 2 ways:

  1. Contact an approved service provider and try to arrange with them a solution.
  2. Ask Apple to collect the laptop and let them investigate the issue.

Unfortunately, after having spent 2K+ to have the best laptop I could buy now both the above solutions will cost me something. :(

I am also having this issue. For about a week now, my the camera on my Macbook Pro is not working. When I start the Facetime app, it shows a black screen for about 30 seconds, and then displays this message:

The camera also does not work with any other apps (Chrome, Zoom, etc.). When I start these apps, the green light does come on, but turns off after about 30 seconds and the camera never works. I have tried the following methods to fix the issue, but none have worked:

  1. Installed OS software update (10.15.4)
  2. Made sure all appropriate apps have access to the camera in preferences > privacy > camera
  3. Given all of these apps permission to control the computer in preferences > accessibility
  4. Rebooted in Safe Mode
  5. sudo killall VDCAssistant and sudo killall AppleCameraAssistant in terminal
  6. Logged into the other user account on the computer, and the problem persists.
  7. Checked to see that System Report recognizes the camera

It sounds like a solution might be Reinstalling the OS? Anyone have any pointers on how I can do this? Not ideal, but I need the camera to work ASAP.

Any help is appreciated.

Btw, I don't if it would work because I am just a typical user of Apple products but maybe it's a good idea if every one of us sends feedback to Apple https://www.apple.com/feedback/ as Giu53pp3 did. I chose the Macbook Pro category but I think it doesn't matter as long as we describe the same problem. I have been waiting for a solution soon almost a half a year and still nothing...

So, everybody, I encourage reporting this problem straight to Apple and hopefully they react. I linked our thread as well because by now 450+ people have the same issue and I bet there are more people in reality. #letsdoit

Hi there, I already have the answer (apply for my macbook pro 2016, with 2 USB-C, no touch bar). Maybe could work for any other type of laptop. You should confirm with a technical support.

There is a SERVICE PROGRAM (https://support.apple.com/13-inch-macbook-pro-display-backlight-service)

that solves this kind of issues. There is a group of laptops that has problems with DISPLAY BACKLIGHT.

I took my laptop to an authorized technical support store and they told me that APPLE is going to change "for free" my display because there is an issue of production (FACTORY DAMAGE).

I recommend all of you check this link and talk with APPLE Support or a local technical support store in your city to solve this issue.

CAMERA and also BLACK DISPLAY will be solved by changing display with no charges.

Hope you the best solving this.

OK, from the looks of this,

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250905859

Has tracked this down to a logicboard issue, and 10.15.1 is needed to be reinstalled. Jackhans at the end of the thread had them do it at a genius bar. Hopefully he will be able to get his case # so others can refer to it and ask it be done as mail in until the genius bars are available again, and/or there are Apple Authorized Service Providers who are available again.

Well funny story Paolombana

We don't really know any solution right now.

If you go trough this thread of answers, you will find some people who have had some form of succes with getting their camera's working again…

You will find some idea's of what could be the problem of our camera's not working, whether it could possibly be hardware or software, but we haven't really figured it out yet.

Right now, I would say that it looks like there is something wrong with Apple their software (MacOS, iOS is for the iPhones, MacOS is for the Macs 😉) but the problem is behind a secure layer, and more deep in MacOS and how it operates.

That means that, unless some of the possible solutions which can be found in this thread end up working for you, we can't really do anything about this right now.

Some of us have been contacted by Apple already and are probably still having talks with them, but for now there isn't really a solution, apart from waiting it out.

I will put some of the troubleshooting tips from this thread down here. These are quite basic, and don't do anything bad to your Mac, but if you have the exact same experience as the rest of us in this thread, these troubleshooting tips won't work for you.

To reset the "SMC" of your Mac: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

To reset the "NVRAM" or "PRAM" on your Mac: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204063

You might also want to try and boot your Mac up into safe mode to see if the problem also is present there: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201262

(For safe mode, please note that it is normal that your Mac might work / react a bit slower)

Hope this informs you a bit on the current situation, and if these tips / tricks don't work then I guess…

Welcome to the waiting room ☹️

PS. In your post you say that you updated to the last Sierra update. I do want to ask if you could possibly tell us what OS version you are on (for example 10.15.1), because Apple recently released a update to MacOS with the number 10.15.5

They say in the update notes for this version that it:

"Resolves an issue where the built-in camera may not be detected when trying to use it after using a video conferencing app".

If you are currently on a form of MacOS 10.15, you might want to consider if you want to update to this version, although I want you to know that so far, I don't think I have seen anyone in this thread whose camera started working again after this update.

If you are not on a form of MacOS 10.15 (so for example you are on MacOS 10.14 or 10.13) you might want to try and do some more research on how and if you want to update to 10.15.

PPS. In case you don't know, you can find your MacOS version by going to the top left of your screen, open the  top-down menu, and select "About this Mac". Also, you can use this page to help you with that: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201260

PPPS. If you try to go to the helpful reply's in this thread, you can see another summary of what we found so far (you can go there when you press on the button above all these messages saying "All replies" and click on "Helpful answers").

Yes. We have 8 iMacs. 4 of the 27" iMacs the camera no longer works after 10.15.3. The green light comes on, but all apps are black. I would think the camera just broke but 4 of them? Then 10.15.4 came along and 3 more 27" iMacs stopped working and 1 21.5" stopped working. They work once after the update, then after you close a camera app and they never work again.

I have tried

  • Kill VDCAssisant
  • Reboot in safe mode
  • Disable SIP
  • Create a new user
  • Try from Guest user
  • Reset PRAM
  • Reset SMC
  • Reinstall High Sierra, Mojave & Catalina (all 3 latest versions)
  • Reapply combo update on all 3 versions
  • Replace camera with known good working camera

We took one working iMac that worked flawlessly over and over and opened it up. We carefully removed the entire camera assembly, cable and all and put it in a non working machine. Same problem, green light but no video. We then put the working camera back in the original machine and it worked flawlessly.

My only thought is the firmware updates in 10.15.3 and 10.15.4 screwed up the logic board so it will no longer receive video. Apple fix this!

Macbook Pro camera doesn't work. "No Video".
