Macbook Pro camera doesn't work. "No Video".

For some months already, I have been facing a problem where I can't use the Mac built-in camera. It doesn't work with Facetime, Skype and either Photo Booth.

The message that I get after opening Facetime is "No video. FaceTime has not received any video from the connected camera. Restarting your computer may fix this issue". Only green light is blinking every couple of seconds.

I have been using this laptop for 2 months and it doesn't have any damages that could affect the hardware. Camera and other minor problems started in January 2020 after additional Catalina updates.

I have Googled solution for this problem and tried different solutions but none of them didn't work. Here is the list of solutions that I have tried:

  1.  Kill VDCAssistant in Terminal. It didn't work because I even can't find VDCAssistant from Activity Monitor which should control the camera.
  2. Simply restarting my Mac.
  3. Done all software updates.
  4. Run First Aid option in Disk Utility

Could anybody suggest any other solutions that can be done at home buy general user?

Thanks in advance!

Hello, Laurii112.

Sorry to know you're having this problem with your MacBook Pro.

If you haven't rebooted into safe mode anytime recently you should try that to see if it helps. Let the Mac OS do drive directory repair, cache clearing and other misc housekeeping. Often just booting into safe mode and logging in, then immediately rebooting normally will resolve an issue.  You should do this with all your external peripherals disconnected but the keyboard and mouse.

Booting into Safe Mode…

Use safe mode to isolate issues - Apple Support

What Safe mode does:

  • Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  • Loads only required kernel extensions
  • Prevents startup items and login items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts
  • Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Restarting in Safe mode can often eliminate a problem or help identify the cause.

You can verify that you have started in Safe mode by clicking the Apple () menu > About This Mac > System Report. Then find >Software< in the left column and look at >Boot Mode: Safe vs Normal< in the right pane.

Note– starting up in Safe mode could take 10 minutes or more. Be patient.

Does the problem persist while in Safe mode?

Restart your Macintosh and re-evaluate the issue.

Wojtek49, I had a camera hardware error on my MacBook pro 2016 model, but after finding out that there is a replacement program for defect screen backlight I took a very close look at my screen and saw minor issues that actually were enough to qualify for the replacement. Which also sorted the camera problem. Maybe worth checking? Actually, I also managed to replace the keyboard through an equivalent replacement program, just by finding out that two of my keys were not perfectly responsive. If you qualify for that, your keyboard backlight problem will get solved as well. Good luck!

Will say, this IS NOT a hardware problem as I initially thought. I went through every Apple Support article I could find regarding this issue. Tried every "solution" given. Even tried the EtreCheck before I knew about this thread. Went through the steps to "send it back to Apple"... There's no point in that. This is a software/firmware problem that reared it's head in 10.15.3 for most and exacerbated it in 10.15.4. This will require a fix from Apple.

I was able to get my camera working again on 10.15.4 by doing a COMPLETE vanilla install of macOS and then used "Migration Assistant" to move all my files and programs back. That was my solution, was not preferable as it took many attempts to get the process right due to the T2 security chip in my late-2019 MBP.

For everyone encountering this issue, I had every symptom described in this thread. I was lucky enough to have Time Machine Backups and enough resolve to get the camera working again. But then again, my side hustle required me to enact good habits years ago when I only had a 2015 MBP. Your milage will undoubtedly vary.

I don't know why but i found solution for me: I installed Movavi Screen Recorder (it's not an advertisement lol), go to settings -> web cam -> pick my built-in face-time camera at first popup, and change the resolution at second popup, and it starts working!

Hope it helps somebody, cheers

(don't afraid, it's just russian language at screenshoot)

I wrote to Apple thru Developer Feedback Assistant, attached some logs. Here is answer:

These log messages indicate that camera module hardware has failed or has become disconnected. These software indications are consistent with a damaged, defective, or disconnected camera module.

In some cases, this can be caused by a loose camera connection cable; if that is the case, a field repair is possible by re-seating and confirming that the camera module's cable is correctly attached.

In other cases, this log is consistent with hardware damage. Unfortunately, there is no software fix for either condition.
here has been no camera software or firmware update that would affect these products for multiple development-years, so it is very implausible that the hardware damage has any relationship to the camera device software or firmware.

I answered that it is not possible for sure. I will keep you updated.

If you have a backup of your hard drive made just prior to this happening you can revert to that system as described in this Apple document: Revert your Mac to a previous macOS version - Apple. If you have files that are newer than when the problem occurred that you need be sure to backup the drive now so you can restore them after reverting to the earlier system.

Thanks for joining

However, I am sad that you have this problem as well. I doubt that you have a hardware issue. I read from another thread that you can easily check whether you Mac recognizes the camera or not. You have to go "About your Mac" --> "System Report" and from hardware's column fin "Camera". If you see that the camera information is there, then everything should be fine with hardware. So most likely it's still software issue. Of course, I am not a tech guy but at least that's what I have read. I covered my unique ID just in case.

Hi Natalia

Well, my problem started with my camera, and after 5 weeks my display turned black, and the only way that work was opening at 30 degrees.

When I talk with the technical support they told me that at changing the display , backlight and camera would be solved. But, considering that is a factory issue, you could ask to be included in the service program.

In the link you can check if you Serial Number is included on those units with this damage and ask for the support.

I really hope they change you your display and dont have to wait until your display turns black.

After reading your post and watching your videos, I tested this on my laptop. SAME THING HAPPENED. With the lid way down, the camera opens and turns on. As I lift the lid, the camera display turns off once it's close to open. So then in my case as in yours, it sounds like a cable connection issue between the base and the screen. I'm relieved to have found the source and likely cause. Now to get it fixed.

Been chasing the same tail (going round and round) as everyone else without getting a lasting solutions but just before going down another full restore ++... checked the release notes for today's upgrade 10.15.5 which includes : Resolves an issue where the built-in camera may not be detected when trying to use it after using a video conferencing app.

Here's hoping, if not - back to try and catch that bloody tail!

I have been on 10.15.3 since my whole ordeal happened and getting it working again. .4 didn’t appear to have a fix but now .5 seems to be the resolution we all have been pining for. The funny thing about it is the speaker popping issue that affected almost 10.15 vanilla rears its head once in a while... very odd since that was fixed but so is this whole cam thing. I’m curious about what other users have encountered with the .5 update.
