Macbook Pro camera doesn't work. "No Video".

For some months already, I have been facing a problem where I can't use the Mac built-in camera. It doesn't work with Facetime, Skype and either Photo Booth.

The message that I get after opening Facetime is "No video. FaceTime has not received any video from the connected camera. Restarting your computer may fix this issue". Only green light is blinking every couple of seconds.

I have been using this laptop for 2 months and it doesn't have any damages that could affect the hardware. Camera and other minor problems started in January 2020 after additional Catalina updates.

I have Googled solution for this problem and tried different solutions but none of them didn't work. Here is the list of solutions that I have tried:

  1.  Kill VDCAssistant in Terminal. It didn't work because I even can't find VDCAssistant from Activity Monitor which should control the camera.
  2. Simply restarting my Mac.
  3. Done all software updates.
  4. Run First Aid option in Disk Utility

Could anybody suggest any other solutions that can be done at home buy general user?

Thanks in advance!

Hello, Laurii112.

Sorry to know you're having this problem with your MacBook Pro.

If you haven't rebooted into safe mode anytime recently you should try that to see if it helps. Let the Mac OS do drive directory repair, cache clearing and other misc housekeeping. Often just booting into safe mode and logging in, then immediately rebooting normally will resolve an issue.  You should do this with all your external peripherals disconnected but the keyboard and mouse.

Booting into Safe Mode…

Use safe mode to isolate issues - Apple Support

What Safe mode does:

  • Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
  • Loads only required kernel extensions
  • Prevents startup items and login items from opening automatically
  • Disables user-installed fonts
  • Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Restarting in Safe mode can often eliminate a problem or help identify the cause.

You can verify that you have started in Safe mode by clicking the Apple () menu > About This Mac > System Report. Then find >Software< in the left column and look at >Boot Mode: Safe vs Normal< in the right pane.

Note– starting up in Safe mode could take 10 minutes or more. Be patient.

Does the problem persist while in Safe mode?

Restart your Macintosh and re-evaluate the issue.

Similar to a couple of others, an Apple rep contacted me after posting on this thread to generate some reports for the engineering team to investigate. I didn't hear back for about 3 weeks so I followed up but the person I was in contact with said no feedback on my case yet. I use my webcam regularly so they told me to bring my laptop to the store to be fixed and they would cover the cost of repair if it is camera related (2016 MBP, so I'm out of warranty). They had to replace the entire display as some have suggested and it fixed the problem for me so far.

Gotta say I'm happy with this outcome thus far. Customer service was great and they genuinely cared about fixing this issue for me and I hope everyone will get their turn soon.

Solution for me was:

1) Boot into "Safe" mode (hold down Shift whilst restarting)

The camera device was then detected and showed up in System Information; Photo Booth worked again.

This proved that there is no hardware fault

2) Boot back to normal mode

One by one, remove programs from "Login Items" (System prefs > Users & Groups > Login Items)

Reboot normally after each change

Culprit was Cisco Webex Meetings (40.2.12.18). Once removed, the camera became available again.

A member of my family had this today. High Sierra on a 2011 iMac. Camera suddenly stopped working whilst in Google Classroom.

Under System Information the built in camera was no longer listed - "No video capture device is installed". Rebooting / Shutdown / etc etc from official advice/other posts all did not work.

What worked was creating a new admin user, logging off current user, logging into the new user and proving that in hardware terms that the camera was working - via Google Meet. Camera now listed in System Information.

Logoff from the new user, and logged back on to original account. Hey presto! Camera now working and listed in System Information.

Dear all, I see the following options...

  1. We can continue to come up with various trial and error to hope for the best to resolve the issue, good luck!
  2. If within AppleCare or 1st year warranty, highly recommend to free replacement of the screen model with built-in cam.
  3. If out of AppleCare warranty or older model MacBook s, consider whether external cam is acceptable as the repair fee is not cheap if it is fixed by Apple Shop. Kind of SGD800 or RMB3549...

I did option#1 in vain, and took option#2 completion in 3.5hours but queuing Genius Bar for a week. I do not like option#3 as I won't bring an external cam with me to coffee shop or on business trip. Take option#3 dependent on the value of opportunity cost to you...

My two cents.

Hi!

Yesterday, the 18th I found out that I had this problem as well, even though I used my camera just 1 or 2 days before.

I started looking on the web, and found this gem of a threat, when I started looking through all the replies.

Just like all of you, I tried everything apart from the full HD deleting and making a report and sending it in with this thread.

Nothing.

So, as you might imagine, I was wondering if it was a software issue.

I have just read the post / reply above by "a brody", and I was interested in the face that the cable might have a fault.

So what I did, I almost closed the lid of my Macbook Pro late 2016 4 thunderbolt touch bar model, and started up Photo Booth.

AND THE CAMERA STARTED WORKING

I was astonished so I immediately started recording a video on my iPhone of what happend next.

basically, the camera worked just before I put my mac in a 90 degree angle.

So… I guess in my instance… it's a hardware issue then…

I think the cables might have gotten damaged when I recently put my mac through a bit of hard work, putting out a lot of heat, thereby maybe overheating the cables in the hinge mechanism…

For the rest, everything seems to be working fine. The light sensors for both the display and the keyboard work, so I guess it's just the camera for me…

Here are the video's. As you could imagine, I was pretty shocked.

Apple MacBook Pro camera fault (1) (FYI: This one has 2 F**k swears in it)

Apple MacBook Pro camera fault (2)

Especially the first one is interesting, because you can just see the 'error' happening in the screen

Would love to hear your inputs, thanks "a brody" for your reply.

OK, from the looks of this,

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/250905859

Has tracked this down to a logicboard issue, and 10.15.1 is needed to be reinstalled. Jackhans at the end of the thread had them do it at a genius bar. Hopefully he will be able to get his case # so others can refer to it and ask it be done as mail in until the genius bars are available again, and/or there are Apple Authorized Service Providers who are available again.

FYI I'm experiencing the same issue on an iMac. I get the "no camera found" message in Photo Booth. Nor can the camera be detected in any other apps (by Apple or 3rd party like Zoom). It is interesting to note that there is only one user account affected by this problem on the iMac. Other users (including the guest user) can use the camera without issue. So this is definitely a software issue, at least in my case.

Try a cheapie external USB webcam, there may be certain "apple" compatibility limitations but I doubt it.

I randomly picked an old one previously used with a Windows PC and plugged it in, it's detected right away alongside the built-in one, and can be selected in the Photo-Booth "Camera" menu:

Vimicro USB2.0 Camera:

Model ID:	UVC Camera VendorID_2760 ProductID_13392
  Unique ID:	0x144100000ac83450

FaceTime HD Camera (Built-in):

I think every software solution in mind I've done, including installing Big Sur Dev Beta 4 now as my MacBook Pro stands. None of it has worked so I really think this is down to either a severe hardware fault (across 2016-2020 MacBooks and that's scary that all of them started to fail around Mar) or that there has been one major software fault (probably a firmware update or something - in tandem with the USB issues that they have been fixing recently) that has caused all the iSight cams to go bust. I never had the USB issues but since the iSight camera effectively shows under USB, I assume that this could be linked in some form.

Btw, I don't if it would work because I am just a typical user of Apple products but maybe it's a good idea if every one of us sends feedback to Apple https://www.apple.com/feedback/ as Giu53pp3 did. I chose the Macbook Pro category but I think it doesn't matter as long as we describe the same problem. I have been waiting for a solution soon almost a half a year and still nothing...

So, everybody, I encourage reporting this problem straight to Apple and hopefully they react. I linked our thread as well because by now 450+ people have the same issue and I bet there are more people in reality. #letsdoit

Hi, a brody!

Thanks a lot for your comments. I have one specific questions regarding my case and I would be very thankful if you could check this. I have had this problem already for half a year soon, but about 3-4 weeks ago, one user posted his solution to this thread which was following and it worked for me once as well:

I went to Settings, then Privacy, clicked on the unlock button, then clicked on Accessibility and then at the bottom of the right hand column that says Let the Apps Below To Control Your Computer, there is a plus (+) sign. Then I just added Facetime and PhotoBooth. Clicked on the lock on the bottom lefthand corner and restarted the computer.

And that worked for me once. That means, all applications run normally and I could make an even one video call for a long time. After closing both programs the problem occurred again. After testing multiple possible solutions and after installing software yesterday from the clean sheet, it is still hard to believe that it's a hardware problem (system recognises the camera as well). I don't believe that my Macbook Pro or its screen was in a certain position which let my camera work normally for a moment.

I don't use any specific plugins that need for an update or any other third party application. Either I use third party chargers or other accessories that could affect my Macbook's work.
