After a ton of troubleshooting, I was able to figure out what my problem was. As has been reported in other threads, iTunes and now Music sometime duplicate your playlists (without you doing anything). I had a folder for my "Smart" playlists. When I opened that folder to check, it had duplicated my dozen or so smart playlists into about 300 smart playlists. When I deleted this Smart Playlist folder, all of the performance problems went away!!!!!
yes, I do remember seeing that chrysbar, I currently have around 76,000 tracks.. so I guess I would reframe my question for apple.. how many tracks can you have before your app starts to slow down :-)
I have a similar issue to everyone else on this thread. Ever since upgrading to Catalina, the Apple Music App takes forever to load or the application stops responding while attempting to load. I updated my Catalina this evening to 10.15.6 in hopes that it help, but it didn't. It took several attempts of launching the application before it finally decided to open. I'm now afraid to quit the app for fear i won't be able to open it.
Apple, this is ridiculous! We pay good money for your hardware. This problem appears to be rather old. What's the solution. Please don't placate us with troubleshooting guides and other non-relevant ways of wasting our time. Fix the issue, your software is buggy.
Please help! I love my music, and want to listen to it on my Mac.
Here is my hardware setup:
Mac mini (Late 2012)
2.5 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1536 MB
MacOS Catalina 10.15.6 (19G2021)
Apple need to take heed and fix this issue otherwise I am going to take my money to a competitor.
I open Apple Music on my Mac Mini and try to do a search for any artist. I may as well go and have a nap because by the time I get any results I've lost the desire to listen to music.
This is robbing me of the joy of music. In the old days it was so simple, put the cassette in the machine, press play and turn up the volume. Now I have to examine my network, do some kind of spiritual dance and then maybe if I'm lucky I'll hear some music.
It's supposed to be for our pleasure, Apple.
Hi. I have a Macbook Air and my Apple music on the laptop is infuriating. On my phone, Apple music works just fine. The spotify on my laptop works just fine. When I try use my Apple Music, I can't play anything that hasn't been completely downloaded and none of the earphone and keyboard buttons work. I have tried fixes from other people with problems, turning my laptop on and off, logging in and out of Apple Music and Force Quitting. How can fix this issue? Does this happen to anyone else? Also, I've only had this laptop a year. Everything else works just fine.
Good to know that I'm not the only one. The program is slow, searching most of the times does not give a response, everything is sluggish, it's really a drama. I'm using the newest MacBook Pro 13", fastest processo.
My iMac is running fine on catalina but Apple Music is very slow , it shows connecting but doesn’t connect for a long time , my internet is also fine ,I recently upgraded iMac from high Sierra to Catalina ,rest everything is absolutely perfect , just this issue , pls advice
Same problem here. It's so frustrating because every single streaming service works perfectly except Apple Music. My connection can load 4k Videos in less than 10 seconds but it takes Apple Music almost 15 seconds to load a song.
I'm also running macOS Catalina so software should not be an issue. The same scenario applies to my iPhone. Can't believe Apple hasn't addressed this topic after so many years, Spotify is clearly eons ahead.
Same here. And with the recent new iPhones e new HomePod mini announcement, they suggested that we would finally have a "music handoff" on Apple Music. I'm still waiting for this. If the Alpha release of Big Sur doesn't fix the Music App issue on macOS and handoff doesn't land, Spotify for the whole family it is....
This app is the worst ever. I'm just trying to create a playlist. I click on the new playlist from the 3 dots button, then nothing happens...
The user experience is the poorest I had so far from Apple. And if I understand well, Big Sur won't resolve anything...
On my iphone it works much beter.
Worst app ever, indeed.
If Big Sur does not deliver massive improvement on the absurd sluggishness of this core Apple media ecosystem app, it'll be time to start unwinding myself from the Apple ecosystem.
Apple has proven they absolutely just don't give a bleep.

Sorry to disappoint, but I have MacOS Big Sur Beta 9 running on my Mid 2015 15" retina and it is still the same....
Thank you for cushioning in advance the cold anger at Apple I will feel after upgrading to Big Sur, whenever that might, and discovering that they still haven't bothered to fix this %&*@.
I just upgraded from a 2009 MacBook with iTunes, no lag when scrolling through my albums.
Brand new MacBook M1, noticeable lag when scrolling albums.
Not to mention the more limited feature set of Apple Music app.
Apple, pull your head in.
I've got the same issue as well. Late 2019 27" iMac, switched to Catalina and lost iTunes, now I have to deal with this monstrosity that is Music. Slow slow loading times and the creation of huge numbers of duplicate playlists, none of which I can delete without causing my computer to refuse to synch with my iPhone.
I hoped that installing Big Sur would clear up the problem, but it's still there. Just as bad.
Same here, I got a 2019 iMac everything runs oke but the Apple Music app is so bad.
it keeps crashing, loading, not playing songs. for this reason I had to end my subscription and have to use Spotify again.
Hi, same problem here, across all my devices (Macbook pro, iPhone 11 Pro, home PC, work PC). It does not matter if I access Apple Music via dedicated app on each platform or through new music.apple.com web player.
There is a common theme: songs don't start playing immediately, there is a frequent delay of few seconds, UI is generally very laggy, takes few seconds to respond to clicks and refresh screens/menus, and then few more to load all the content (artwork, playlist, etc..). I frequently see spinning loading circle... and if I scrub and skip songs frequently it tends to crash (again on all devices and platforms).
It's just very very slow.
Spotify in a web player is super snappy, responsive and fast compared to Apple Music running on my Mac or via iOS App. I don't understand why Apple can't match performance of other typical web services.....
