Logic Pro X keeps crashing after Catalina update

Every time I delete a track on Logic Pro X the whole thing crashes and I have to force quit and reopen. How can I fix this/when will they update the app or the OS?

MacBook Pro 15", macOS 10.12

The important part is at 2:05 basically all you have to do is open a project click File -> Save As... -> Select "Folder" instead of "Package" -> then Save. After this I was finally able to delete tracks and audio files without Logic crashing.

Hope this helps!

Have you tried starting a completely new project in Logic, and make the first track a drummer track, see if that works, in case there is a problem with your existing file?

My system has been really tiresome since the updates, but starting to improve slightly, for no real reason. I am hoping there is a fix on its way for the general slowness and awkwardness of Logic in its new updated form. It is like walking into the wind.

I'm having exactly this problem, but I can't do anything at all in Logic without having it crash.

Late 2013 MacBook Pro with 16 GB of memory and 400+ gigs of free space. I upgraded to Catalina last night in order to install Logic, so I've never used Logic before. I had tinkered with Garageband and with Reaper, and wanted to try Logic for a few days to see which I like better.

I have a project open, with exactly one track: an imported MP3 backing track from my bass guitar course. I haven't yet plugged in my Scarlett 2i2 interface yet, so inputs are still device defaults. I was going to plug that in next, but never got that far. I played the backing track, then tried to adjust the track volume.

At that point my cursor changed to a small, almost invisible white dot, and the volume slider moved wherever my mouse moved. The space bar did not affect playback. I was unable to quit from the dock and had to force-quit. I have duplicated this problem several times, with identical results each time. I saw someone's suggestion about using Save As... to change from package to folder, and that crashed Logic as well.

I had the Activity Monitor up for the last couple of crashes. Logic never took more than 20% of the CPU load, and memory use was no higher than Apple Music (which was open but not playing).

Any thoughts? Obviously, so far my assessment of Logic is decidedly negative.

Thanks,

Robert

I’ve been having these problems for a long time and worse since Catalina.

I have a late 2016 fully loaded iMac

had a fusion drive... that crashed recently.

now running off external Samsung hi speed SSD. It’s possible the earlier problems had more to do with the fusion drive as I’ve read about that.

Since running on the SSD things are equally bad. I’ve got everything up to date (I have a great deal of plugins, mostly Arturia, Eventide, Soundtoys, IZOTOPE, Waves, NI including maschine). I also have a great deal of peripherals and hubs plugged into the Mac (synths, midi hubs via USB) and two additional displays.

also I’m running a focusrite Scarlett 18i20 interface with expansion to the full input range. I think focusrite May be a common theme here.

here’s what I’ve done (apologies for lack of complete instructions— you should be able to piece together from this thread and google if I’m not clear):

Update all plugins (since my goal is to get my current, unstable system working rather than old steady state — which hasn’t existed for an infuriatingly long time for me)

2. Ctrl click on logic in apps folder and change a graphics setting to lower res etc.

3. Remove all unnecessary peripherals and build up use one at a time (nope, still crashing with bare minimum)

4. Delete audio preferences — all of them and the related kext system files need to be deleted using recovery mode then running terminal and the csrutil disable (and then after, csrutil enable) commands which allow you to delete kext files and there’s more complex stuff if you have FileVault turned on — I’ve just done this and will report back.

as an artist and my own engineer i have been wounded by this hampering of my ability to express myself, and to grow and learn as a recording artist. Sessions now have become about getting a “usable result” without crashing (which happens anyway) because the mind, and frankly the body, can’t handle the constant interruptions particularly around the emotional effects of creating music. If music is as good or better than sex than this is a very unpleasant, cruel and random interruption!

I’ve been told it was more stable using logic in the 90s. please fix this Apple so if I fail as an artist I can at least blame myself!

In the meantime I’ll let you all know if the kext deletions did the trick.
