Updating apps using iTunes 12.6.5.3

I've been using iTunes 12.6.5.3 to update and sync my IOS apps for quite a while now. But a few days ago it stopped working. When I hit the "Update All Apps" button in iTunes, it displays "Downloading xxx", "Downloading yyy" and continues through all apps that's available for update, but nothing is downloaded. Looks like a server problem, but no error messages are displayed whatsoever. Updating the apps via each of my IOS devices is of course working just fine.

Any ideas?

I've got this problem too. Anyone tried using iMazing or Apple Configurator 2 instead?

I trked Apple Configurator 2 and it did update the app on the phone, but I can't see the download anywhere. I guess I was hoping that if it downloaded then I could copy it to iTunes for future use...

A quick google search later, I found it here:

~/Library/Group Containers/K36BKF7T3D.group.com.apple.configurator//Library/Caches/Assets/TemporaryItems/MobileApps/51A7935F-F02E-48B3-A807-86EE722C787C/1380676511/BBC Sounds 1.16.1.ipa

So I used a command like this to copy the file somewhere useful:

find ~/Library/Group\ Containers/K36BKF7T3D.group.com.apple.configurator/ -name "*.ipa" -exec cp {} /Volumes/QNAPRAID/itunes/ \;

From there I can drag it into iTunes.

It only seems to download apps that you actually have installed on the device. So if you have several devices and different apps installed on some to others, you need to perform the update on each.

Also I'd not used Apple Configurator 2 before so wasn't already signed in to my personal itunes account. There is no meaningful error if you are not signed in - it just doesn't let you update apps.

I don't see this as very useful long term, but as a short term fix it may be ok.

Here is my problem summarized, is it the same as the other 125 people it says have this problem?

The Mac mini stores backup of the apps I use on 5 different iOS device that I support; I do this so I do not have to download for hour upon hour over the internet when I get a new device and need to fill it up with our Apps.

To do the updating of these stored apps, iTunes version 12.6.5.3 normally checks the stored app .ipa files in my Mac against the current updates being pushed out to iOS devices by Apple. If there is an update available, iTunes version 12.6.5.3 will indicate this in the part of the program called "updates" by showing the icon for any revised app. Currently there are about 40 of these waiting under "Updates" section.

Normally I can click on Update Apps button at bottom of the scree and all those updates are then downloaded, the .ipa file in storage is deleted and the new version .ipa replaced in storage on my Mac. The problem is that what was working to do the replacement and update of each .ipa is broken somehow and the .ipa is not downloading.

Following is a print-screen that show all the apps I have waiting now.

I just got a new PC, with Win 10. It didn't come with iTunes. Yesterday I installed iTunes v 12.6.5.3 onto to my new Win 10 PC. So far, it seems to work fine.

I can update apps from the App Store and I can sync them to at least one of our iDevices.

What I did find, was that even if I told iTunes NOT to sync an update, it sometimes did; not for all apps but I didn't see a pattern.

iTunes 12.6.5.3 backed up the phone I did yesterday. Looks no different from when it was on the Win 7 machine.

Is there no way for you to UNinstall the iTunes?

Just one further question: How do I transfer the updated .ipas to my Mac iTunes - previous post says to drag and drop to iTunes, but what folder? Mobile Apps is where the old ones are, i think.

The updated .ipa files are not dropped into a folder. The procedure to copy the updated .ipa files into iTunes is as follows:

Open iTunes, select "Apps" from the listbox in the upper left corner and then click the "Library" tab in the menu bar. Drag and drop the new .ipa file(s) into this iTunes window.

Has there been any conclusion to this problem?

I am over 4 months without app updates and some apps are now refusing to work until updated. I very much want to keep my updates on the mac via iTunes but my old hardware will not support versions newer than MacOS 10.11.6 and iTunes 12.6.0.1.

I have tried ideas suggested in this tread including sending many messages to apple feedback. Yet 4 months on, I have heard no comment from apple if this will or will not be fixed. Has anyone developed a hack to make it work properly or found other solutions? Thank you.

Most likely you won't get a response. As to the need to update your iPhone apps so they work properly on iOS 13:

  1. Open the App Store on your phone, then tap Today at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Tap your profile icon at the top of the screen.
  3. Scroll down to see pending updates and release notes. Tap Updatenext to an app to update only that app, or tap Update All.

iOS12 has one less step: No need to tap Today and your icon profile.

  1. Open the App store on your phone.
  2. Tap the Updates button on the lower menu
  3. Scroll to the updates you need.

It's how Apple wants us to do it now. It's quite simple if you only have one or two devices. 12.6.5.3 allowed us to handle multiple devices for installing/removing apps and updating all our iOS devices. It was great for families and especially IT departments at institutions. 12.6.5.3 was actually designed for them because it removed that annoying update warning that one constantly got on earlier versions.

Since many of us choose to stay with the old iTunes for the features or those like you who have older hardware and OS's and have no choice, Apple in it's great wisdom finally took away this feature from 12.6.5.3 from their servers, so we would be forced to upgrade our hardware and software at some point. I suppose it how they see selling new gear to loyal Apple users.

Update your apps now on your phone to get them to function properly or avoid their failure altogether, and move on. It sucks, but don't expect Apple to restore the features of iTunes 12.6.5.3.
