USB SuperDrive not showing in Finder on MacBook Pro

I have a 2015 MacBook Pro running Catalina 10.15.3. I just got a USB SuperDrive for getting files off some CDs. When I connect the drive to the laptop, Finder doesn't show the drive.

When I insert a CD into the drive, it launches the Apple Music app. So clearly the two are connected and communicating.

But I want to be able to see the drive on Finder and look at the files in the CD.

Is there a way to make that happen? When I look at the Apple instructions, it sounds like it should work. Thanks.

Hi spudboyvt!

Thanks for verifying that the box is checked for the SuperDrive to appear in Finder.

With the SuperDrive connected, open System Preferences. You should see a CDs and DVDs preferences pane. This item will only appear when the SuperDrive is connected.

Next, go to System Information > USB and see if the SuperDrive is recognized. You'll also want to check System Information > Disc Burning. This will help verify that your MacBook and SuperDrive are communicating as expected.

Next, check out the troubleshooting steps below. These are from the article: Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer.

From the, "First steps," section:

"Make sure the Apple USB SuperDrive is lying flat on a surface with the silver top facing upward (shown below). If the Superdrive is oriented upside down it will not read discs.

Correct: Aluminum enclosure is facing up

Incorrect: Apple logo should be facing down

Because the USB port on external displays may not be powered at startup, connect the drive directly to the USB ports on your Apple computer when you need to use the Superdrive as a startup device. Reconnect the Superdrive directly to the display when you no longer need to start the computer from the SuperDrive."

From the, "Accepts discs but the don't mount or are automatically ejected," section:

"1. Make sure the drive is not placed upside down. The aluminum enclosure should be facing up as shown in section 1.

2. Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.

3. Connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.

4. Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).

5. Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.

    • OS X Snow Leopard v10.6 or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
    • OS X Lion v10.7 and later: Click the Apple () menu and then hold down the Option key. Choose System Information from the menu."

If the issue persists, restart in safe mode and test again: Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

Still occurring in safe mode? Create a new user and test it out again. This article will show you how: How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac.

Cheers!

Hello spudboyvt,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities! I understand you're not seeing the DVD drive in Finder.

Begin by checking the Finder Preferences. This is where you can make changes to the items that you see in the Finder Sidebar by going to the Menu bar, selecting Finder > Preferences > Sidebar. You'll find the option to see CDs, DVDs, and iOS Devices listed under Locations. This article will show you additional settings you'll find in Finder Preferences: Change Finder preferences on Mac

All the best!
