iPhone 7 Plus with iOS 13.4 battery drain problem

After a relatively short period of use, especially phone calls the exterior of my SE is over 40 degrees C so just imagine what the internal temp is.

The way I see it this iOS is probably seriously affecting the health of my phone in general & not only the battery health which has dropped another 2% in the last couple of days to 87%.

Support is busy because of pandemic and because of this issue. I emailed problem to support, from what I’ve read 13.4.5 is in beta and has discovered what’s been happening, and is in process of fixing? Hope it’s soon or I will be replacing this!

The battery usage has got worse ... the phone is turning itself off .. I cannot use it without it being plugged into a power source. Which mean my mobile is not mobile anymore.

I cannot use it outside of my house.

Yup call Apple support, do a reset then play around with your apps for weeks trying to find the culprit ( i know it was working before). Then reset it again then take off every single mail and work application and leave it on the counter. But don’t forget to shut it down as even in standby it will drain your battery

I have the problem on my XS Max. There are no less than 5 threads on this issue and no less than 1,000 users on THIS thread indicating they have the same issue.

Googling "13.4.1 battery" renders several articles as well as a large number of threads on both this forum and others.

tldr: there is a well documented bug at least for 13.4.1 (others seeing it as early as 13.4)

Depends when your problem with heavy battery drain started.

If it started after an update to say 13.4 or 13.4.1 then probably nothing.

If it started after making a change to you prefs or installing an app then try to delete the app or change the pref back.

Its not a way of killing off older phones its just plain bad sloppy programming by Apple.

True, very likely it’s a modem or connectivity issue that drains the battery. Since iPhone 7 Apple uses modem chips from Intel and ever since any new iPhone has problems with WiFi and network signal. If you search about that there are more threads than here for the battery. Many times Apple has tried to compensate that poor signal with software adjustments and perhaps these time they had it wrong and so we all have batteries drained at faster rate. Also getting WiFi signal or using an iPhone for a hot spot is real pain, I was forced to switch to Android just to keep myself connected, even though I like Apple more as final product I have no problems with huawei phone but a lot with expensive iPhone , that ironically I can only use as back up phone or camera. Not happy.

So it appears the answer is to turn everything off making your smart phone stupid. Might as well just carry a block of wood around.

I actually don’t have a problem with my phone, but I’m on 13.3.

My problem is my iPad mini 4 that no longer lasts days of typical use on a charge. I thought it was getting better from using 20% per hour, it was up to, or down to, using 15%. But, alas, it was not to be.

in about a 36 hour period, it used 95% of the battery with a whopping 2 hours and 49 minutes of screen time. Don’t tell me it’s a faulty iPad. The problem started immediately after updating to 13.3 and persists after the next updates I’ve done in hopes of fixing it. Bluetooth and location is off. It’s been reboot, reset, and restored.

Almost as irritating is that since these updates, I have to delete my junk mail 3 times instead of once. Delete it and it reloads right back in less than a second. Delete again, it goes to trash, where I delete again.

amazingly my phone is fine. 8plus. Including deleting junk mail.

Deggie and everyone else on this thread - I have worked with Apple Support for more than six months. The iOS 12, then iOS 13 updates ruined my iPad Pro. Mine is an SE and has been a pain in the rear for over a year, battery life of 40 mins at one point.

if not already register for the beta test software and try upgrading to 13.5 beta 3 which will initially cause high cpu but mine settled back to a normal phone in 4 days. I have no intention of upgrading further until I know it actually works.

Restoring from a backup will reinstall the same bugs you had when you backed it up. To resolve software related issues the way you're thinking of, you'd need to set it up as a new iPhone after a factory reset. If it's a bug in iOS 13.4.1, which I think it is, then this won't help either. I have an iPhone 8 and XS Max, and my wife has an XS Max, and we didn't experience any of these battery problems until 13.4.1. I did the reset on my 8 and it didn't solve the problem, so I restored it. I have been working with Apple Support to try and find out what's causing it. It's not a rogue app or anything like that. I've followed all the precautions to slow battery drain, and nothing seems to help. My concern, which I don't have benchmarks to look, but my concern is that perhaps there is a bug in the "performance manager" feature that was added in iOS 12, which may be causing the CPU to draw too much power from our iPhones, due to overclocking or something like that. I also read there was an antenna update in 13.4.1 and so it's also possible those radios are drawing more power to increase the range or speed of signals, but I have the batter drain even in Airplane mode, no sim card in and just on wifi on all 3 devices. So, if that part of the update effected wifi antennas then that makes sense, but the only way to fix it then would be another update, which the Apple Support team had no information about. I have a feeling it's that radio update, because people had been complaining about weak signals. Stronger radio signal unfortunately equals faster battery drain. If anyone else has this issue, please contact Apple Support. Let them perform a remote diagnostic and if they gather enough info from our devices, they can then identify the problem and hopefully fix it. Thanks!

Things are going a bit better with my iPhone 8.

The symptoms were the following : my iPhone was rebooting everyday while the battery level was much more than 50%, without switching to saving mode.

And then, after rebooting, it was around 10% 🤔.

I managed to let it go to the end of power, and then only, I charged it again fully.

Now, it’s going much better :

• battery is draining much slower,
• my iPhone is no longer rebooting,
• it switches to saving mode normally.

Second solution I found to avoid battery draining so fast : I switch to saving mode immediately after a full charge !

Back ground activity is consuming a lot especially for some apps, like Instagram.

Yeah I have only good things to say about the computers and how the ecosystem works well, but I don’t like my 3 year old phone getting battery battery drain like mad! I think I know what they did. I think they boosted the power to the radios to solve connectivity issues people were having. That is NOT necessary on every model. My 8 definitely doesn’t need it. So I’m not happy either.

yeah it seems like the top 10% goes down really really fast then it slows down a little bit once it gets down closer to 80% and I’m a fan of the original SE I heard the 12 is supposed to have a similar design and if it weren’t updates screwing up my batteries I would have potentially contemplated getting the 12. But now maybe not, because they will just break it with updates later. Why don’t these companies just sell a finished product? We should not have to deal with stuff like this...and as for that android comment they break their phones with updates too. I think I’ll go back to a flip phone 🤣😂

Thousands of iDevice users across the entire lineup of compatible devices have been reporting battery issues going back to iPhoneOS 1.0 and every update since then. Contact Apple Support, ask for a second tier support person and volunteer to put a battery profile on your iPhone and maybe they can determine what the issue is.
