MBP 16" 2019 CRASHES WHILE SLEEPING

ANYONE else having a problem with their MacBook Pro going to sleep then crashing? EVERY single day for 4 days now this prompt comes up that says "Your computer was restarted because of a problem." I Purchased a fully loaded 16" MacBook Pro January 2020. A $5000.00 Computer. I have had NOTHING but issue since. The report begins with panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8004a91b2c): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while calling power state change callbacks. Suspected bundle: com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily. Thread 0x1fbc0. After searching I see 582 people have this same problem...REALLY APPLE? Suggestions were made to others who called apple support and they reinstalled their entire systems, reinstalled this, reinstalled that...I don't know about anyone else but I don't have time for all of that nonsense ESPECIALLY after spending $5k on a computer. Finally I found where a person requested the logic board to be replaced and the issue stopped. If Apple can't get their quality assurance in check I will be spending my money elsewhere. I want this computer replaced.

I also ended up having my 16 inch 2019 MacBook Pro sent in to Apple under AppleCare to fix the problem. Same things replaced on mine as on others who have reported: Logic Board and TouchID Boards both replaced. It was a pretty quick process taking only about 3-4 days (despite a warning of possibly taking 2 weeks.)

Everything working fine at this point.

If you have the same computer (regardless of specs as this is a problem independent of that) I would recommend sending your computer in before any AppleCare coverage runs out.

I've had the same problem, MacBook Pro 16 crashes and reboots after being put to sleep. The problem did not repeat in Safe Mode nor when I disconnected all peripherals. I use an external display, 21" Cinema Display, and the MacBook Pro 16 sits under my desk when being used at home.

This problem persists when the MBP lid is closed. When I leave the MBP lid open, the problem goes away and the computer does not crash and reboot during sleep mode and acts completely normal with all peripherals attached. That is the solution that I found so that I can get back to work and all is well. ...with the lid open and the brightness turn down.

Unfortunately, sometimes files get corrupted during updates. That may be what happened to myself and yourself. I know completely erasing a hard drive seems drastic, but if you have a good time machine back up, a few hours of copying data may get you back up and running in a fully functioning state. My 2017 MacBook Pro is running great again. Hope all works out! Hello

I had the same issue for a a couple months with my macbook 16 before finally deciding to take it to apple. The issue seems to be caused by the T2 chip/ overheating (Especially when using GPU intensive applications). Got the T2 chip replaced and started controlling/ boosting the fan speed to maximum and charging on the right side instead of left (there's an earlier thread regarding charging the mac on the left causing overheating).

Been running flawlessly for 2 weeks now, issues disappeared so far,

Initial issues includes

  • unable to wake from sleep mode
  • crashing while running/ waking up from sleep mode
  • unable to boot up
  • unable to switch graphics/ crash while trying to
  • crashing when switching from power cord to battery
  • crashing after prolonged use of graphics intensive apps

Hope this helps

I don't know why this thread is marked as solved, when it clearly is not. My system has been having this issue since I bought my MacBook Pro 16" in May 2020. It has been intermittent and have gone a while at times without the issue surfacing. However, it has gotten much worse in the last week or so and has been crashing every day or two, and sometimes twice a day. I hesitate to let the thing sleep anymore. I have a whole range of errors on restart:

  • Hibernate Restore Error
  • GPU Panic: mux-regs
  • Sleep Wake failure in EFI

I've had this problem both with Power Nap and without. Apple support had me to reset the SMC and the PRAM and NVRAM. And they said to re-install the OS. Seems like not of that works. Will install Big Sur once it's available. This problem is intermittent so might take a while to know if it's fixed with Big Sur. I think Apple might have a hardware problem, but crossing fingers an OS upgrade will fix it.

Since the software update to 10.15.7 mine has behaved itself, although the fan is on constantly when using lightroom but think that another issue ( ? graphics card not coping maybe).

So I do believe the crashing is software curable and also agree that where there are issues (eg with thunderbolt connections etc that we should highlight as it may help isolate the issue)

I too am waiting for Big Sur!

I think I have finally solved this issue after having it for months. I have pretty much the same laptop as you.

I used to get the crash from sleep every time the laptop went into a longer duration sleep. Every morning or after a long lunch = CRASH. Bad look for $3,500 machine, especially since I'm a new Mac user coming from Windows where crashes have been virtually non-existent for years. I was thoroughly unimpressed and frustrated with Apple.

Resetting the SMC, NVRAM and tinkering with sleep/wake times and even reinstalling the OS, only gave temporary relief but the issue came right back.

Here's what I did which DID finally work:

  • System Preferences > Bluetooth > Advanced > Disable all of the options (remove all checkboxes)
  • System Preferences > Energy Saver > Disable WAKE FOR WIFI access
  • System Preferences > Energy Saver > Disable POWER NAP
  • System Preferences > Energy Saver > Disable PREVENT computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off.

I have not yet had the time to go back and systematically enable one at a time to see where it breaks. I'm just gleeful right now about having a $3500 laptop that doesn't crash every. single. day.

The turning point in the FIX was disabling the Bluetooth and wifi wake options. The others (PowerNap, Prevent Sleep when display...) were already disabled and did not fix it.

My unproven theory about why this happens?

I think while the computer is in a deeper sleep, it's listening for nearby Bluetooth devices. If it detects one, maybe it tries to wake, but because of an OS bug, it can NOT wake itself from this deeper sleep, so it crashes). This is all conjecture but it's definitely something having to do with waking from sleep.

If these settings work for you too, another test to further isolate the issue is to revert the above settings BUT try disabling both wifi and Bluetooth before you put your laptop to sleep, to see if that also resolves the issue. But it might not because it might just be a bug in the OS.

Hope this helps others resolve this ANNOYING issue!

My MacBook Pro (MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), 2.6 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7, 16 GB 2667 MHz DDR4, AMD Radeon Pro 5300M 4 GB w/Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB) is still crashing after going to sleep then restarting with the start screen "Your computer was restarted because of a problem".

I am running MacOS BigSur version 11.1 (20C69) but still no luck. VERY VERY frustrating!

Has anyone found a solution to this because the provided SOLVED solution of this thread has not solved the issue.
