Headers in Numbers 6.2.1 (Mac)

Hello,

I want to insert more than one header into the middle of a table. However when I click on "table" then "header rows" and select a number, they will only appear in the top/first rows of the table. I try and move them to where I want them to go but it does not work. Copy and paste does not work either.

Also if I select the particular row to change to a header- for example row 5, I cannot see an option to convert the row into a header.

Even if I just fill the cells with the same colour, I cannot merge the cells in the row with the cell inside a header column for the whole row to combine, the "merge cells" is greyed out, I can only merge the cells that isn't in a header row or column.

I think im missing something here but need your help!

Thanks in advance.

Hi Claire,

If you have already converted rows 1, 2, 3 and 4 to Header rows, you will see the option to do the same with row 5.

"Header rows" must be at the top of the table, and contiguous.

You can place "headings" at the top of each section of the table, but they will be 'headings' in format only, and will not have any of the properties of Header rows or Header columns.

For these, I copied (option-command-C) the format of a cell in row 1 (a Header row), then pasted tht format (option-command-V) into all the cells in rows 6 and 13. Visually, they give the impression of 'header rows,' but functionally, they are ordinary 'body' rows.

Take a look at Categories, and Smart Categories. I'm not sure they will fit what you are trying to do, but they may.

Barry

Hi Claire,

Header rows in a table are exactly that. They are always at the head of a table, never in the middle. Numbers allows a maximum of 5 Header rows in each table (always at the top of a table).

Likewise, Footer rows are always at the foot of a table.

The good news is that we can use the "Charm of Numbers".

Instead of an "ocean" of a sheet that includes "islands" of data here and there, we can place several tables on the "canvas". Each table can have a distinct purpose.

What is your overall aim?

Regards,

Ian.
