Mac Mini 2018 Kernel panic bug_type 210 after Security Update 2020-002

Hello everyone,

since installing the Mojave Security Update 2020-002 I do get a message that my Mac Mini 2018 was restarted because of a problem even I shut it down normally. The Mac Mini 2018 was running fine for 3 months. The Apple Hardware Check does not show any errors. Also tried to reset SMC and PRAM.

Is this a known bug? Just curios wether Mac mini 2018 users who also installed Apple's Security Update 2020-002 do see the same error message?

The Diagnostic Report reads as follows:

I am pleased to confirm that BridgeOS firmware version 18.16.12561 fixes the Kernel panic bug_type 210 on a Mac mini 2018.

Solution:

Installing Big Sur on a separate volumes updates the BridgeOS firmware version 18.16.12561. When you reboot back into Mojave you do no longer experience the error message on cold reboot. After 7 months Apple finally fixed the issue. Apple never replied on any of my Bug Reports.

Note: Installing Security Update 2020-006 on macOS Mojave 10.4.6 does not fix the Kernel panic bug_type 210. You have to install Big Sur on external drive prior going back to your Mojave installation.

Maybe my Catalina-induced (10.15.4 update) recent firmware update to Boot ROM Version: 1037.100.359.0.0 (iBridge: 17.16.14263.0.0,0) is the culprit after all:

I re-tested on a cleanly installed Mojave 10.14.6 with Safari 12.1.2 (without the recent Security Update 2020-002 Mojave or Safari 13.0.5 & 13.1 updates). Also then just using Safari 12.1.2 and then putting the Mac mini to sleep caused a crash (maybe also some other activity besides using Safari can trigger the crash?).

Update April 11, 2020: I did some further testing regarding my initial issue. I have restored from a previous system backup using SuperDuper. This backup clone does NOT include the Security Update 2020-002 Mojave and Safari 13.1. Surprisingly the shutdown message still shows up sporadically when I power on the Mac mini. I have completely shut down my Mac mini 2018 around 10 times. I have waited 5-10 minutes. 4 of 10 times the crash report showed up. It's really difficult to debug. What's interesting is the macOS Mojave Software Update does not show the Security Update 2020-002. So it seems to be already applied. I guess it is definitely related to the T2 BridgeOS Update or other firmware settings which have been patched during the Security Update 2020-002. Restoring from a 4 weeks old system backup does not resolved my issue.

This is a really bummer. I wish Apple would spend more time on testing. So far I haven't heard back from my Apple Bug Report #FB7646566.

I had much the same experience when I reinstalled the system; it reinstalled an earlier version but had the same bug.

We really need to get someone to translate our crash reports.

Keyboard turned out not to be the issue. Suddenly I started getting crashes when the _display_ was off. That was from the keyboard. With no keyboard attached, still get predictable crash-on-sleep.

I believe it is the latest two (Mojave security 2020-002 or Catalina 10.15.4, and 10.15.4 Supplemental) firmware updates after the end of March that cause these sleep/shutdown crashes.

So even a clean Mojave install with its older Safari 12.1.2 doesn't help. Some people experience crashes unrelated to Safari but at least in my setup Safari 12.1.2 or 13.1 are the only apps I know that 100% trigger the crash.

I have now switched to Chrome until (?) Apple fixes this. ...but at the moment I accidentally by old habit launched Safari so another crash is coming if I put the Mac mini to sleep or after shutdown&cold boot...

BTW I have noticed that if I have not used Safari in a previous session and do a shutdown&cold boot, the Mac reacts readily to the power button. But if I have used Safari and do a shutdown&cold boot, I then must wait several seconds (maybe 10s) before the power button works. Maybe there is a T2 chip shutdown crash going on then?

2018 Mini, Mojave 10.14.6, Safari 12.1.2, (bad, buggy) security update.

My Mac is set to never sleep, so I don't have those crashes. I avoided the Safari update so I don't have those crashes.

However my morning boot-up ALWAYS displays a dialog saying "Your computer was restarted because of a problem." and suggests I send a report to Apple. So far they have a lot of reports from me - AND a piece of my mind about how a buggy firmware update to the T-2 chip can be uncorrected for this long. AND that a fix in Catalina is no help if the Mac user has chosen to run Mojave. Every morning I vary my input, for example today's; "Please open your Genius Bars for appointments (1 or 2 customers at a time) to either fix the 202_bug or replace the motherboards." I suggest all of you embellish your comments when you submit your reports.

Where did you get those information? Replacing the logicboard does not make sense to me. It's not a hardware issue. My Mac mini 2018 is running stable. Since I have installed the Mojave Security Update 2020-002, I do get a message on cold reboot that my Mac Mini 2018 was restarted because of a problem even I shut it down normally.

Switching to Firefox/Chrome resolves the issue. As soon as I open Safari, the shutdown message reappears after cold reboot. Why should a fresh T2 ship resolves the issue?

I am having this exact issue with my iMac Pro . After the last security update with Mojave 10.14.6 security and Safari the iMac continues to behave in an odd fashion. I have taken it for repairs twice and still getting crashes. I installed High Sierra and also tried it on Catalina and it does not happen in either OS why is this only occurring in Mojave ? If anyone can give me a solution I would appreciate it. I have tried contacting Apple numerous times and all I can say is " I miss Steve Jobs" I cannot run High Sierra or Catalina due to Audio Pluggins I used. Mojave is the only OS which is fully compatible. Any help is appreciated.

Hello, I have the same issue with a Mac Mini 2018 currently running 10.14.6 - happened after the last system update run about 10 days-2 weeks ago. Am wondering if upgrading to 10.15.5 will solve? Has anyone else been able to avoid the "wake from sleep" Kernel panics consistently? Does switching from Safari to Chrome address this temporarily? Thank you for your insights!

Deactivating Safari, selecting Chrome as default browser and NOT opening Safari at all from the next cold boot is session seemed to work for me as well (Mac mini 2018 user with T2) of course it’s necessary to block safari even in the iCloud settings or it will be opened in the computer when using it on your iPhone or iPad if you have one. I suggest to use Chrome on them too to avoid this problem. Fortunately it is just a bug, annoying, but a bug. Let’s see how much time will them take to fix this.
