Mac Mini 2018 Kernel panic bug_type 210 after Security Update 2020-002

Hello everyone,

since installing the Mojave Security Update 2020-002 I do get a message that my Mac Mini 2018 was restarted because of a problem even I shut it down normally. The Mac Mini 2018 was running fine for 3 months. The Apple Hardware Check does not show any errors. Also tried to reset SMC and PRAM.

Is this a known bug? Just curios wether Mac mini 2018 users who also installed Apple's Security Update 2020-002 do see the same error message?

The Diagnostic Report reads as follows:

Found a Fix for my specific issue ! (Short History and answer below)

I have had this Panic Message upon Start-Up since last February after installing the Security Update & Safare on my Late 2018 Mac Mini using the original Mojave (which I want to keep for my 32bit programs). Too many hours and days with Apple Techs on the phone trouble shooting, and upgrading to Catalina from Mojave. Upon their request I took my 2018 Mini (w/ 128SSD, 8gb, i3) to the Apple Store 14 days ago and left it for a week. They found nothing wrong, but reinstalled Mojave. Still NO Fix !

My specific problem seems to be related to my older USB Mac Keyboard with a Wireless (USB Receiver type) Mouse. I really liked my old extended keyboard, but after getting a New Bluetooth Keyboard and Bluetooth Mouse ... My problem seems to be solved, so far !!!

Hope this helps one of you ...

I took my iMac Pro which is still having the same crash and not even Apple was able to fix this. It is ongoing and to the point where Apple has agreed to replace the unit. There is nothing you can do except to maybe go back to (High Sierra) or forward to Catalina. However on Catalina the issue is not as bad as Mojave because the initial boot is different than that of Mojave. I hope you are able to find a happy medium

Its nuts! Every time i leave my Mac unattended for an hour i come back to a restarted computer due to kernel panic. The only way I can leave it is by closing all Applications (except Chrome), then put to sleep. Generally I can wake it up from sleep without any issues then. But step aside to have lunch with multiple windows open, and boom! restarted.

Do you guys check memory usage?

I would recommend to check it with a free App like Memory Diag from App Store.

I noticed significant memory usage with Safari, so upgraded memory from 16GB to 32GB.

Now I see 30GB of usage with Safari once in a while (ridiculous size for Web browsing).

I sill have a sleep issue, but no crash with Safari since memory upgrade.

Not a real solution, just a workaround, but I hope this helps.

Hi!

I have already described that on my mini it helps to reset PMC and then not using Safari.

I also upgraded the firmware from Big Sure. Everything is ok with one exception. The update of SU 2020-005 and Safari on 14.01 still breaks many small things, e.g. the mini does not display correctly icons for links to www. Therefore, after the firmware upgrade, I leave Mojave without SU 2020-005, without macOS Suplemental Update and without upgr. Safari 14.01.

This is what my mini looks like.

Yesterday I noticed repeated very new crashes with my Mac mini 2018 with all latest Mojave updates:

I put it to sleep, after 1-2 minutes it spontaneously reboots and then displays an alert that the system had crashed. This happened four times in a row.

Previously the Mac mini has been very stable. Earlier that day I had done some tests with Catalina partitions (and finally could update them 10.15.3->10.15.4 but my problems there could be explained by having Catalina on a USB stick because on a SATA disk the update succeeded) and suspected that might have a some role. But maybe the recent Mojave updates explain this? I plan to do my normal troubleshooting today (reset SMC, PRAM, safe-boot, Disk First Aid).

Maybe my Catalina-induced (10.15.4 update) recent firmware update to Boot ROM Version: 1037.100.359.0.0 (iBridge: 17.16.14263.0.0,0) is the culprit after all:

I re-tested on a cleanly installed Mojave 10.14.6 with Safari 12.1.2 (without the recent Security Update 2020-002 Mojave or Safari 13.0.5 & 13.1 updates). Also then just using Safari 12.1.2 and then putting the Mac mini to sleep caused a crash (maybe also some other activity besides using Safari can trigger the crash?).

Where did you get those information? Replacing the logicboard does not make sense to me. It's not a hardware issue. My Mac mini 2018 is running stable. Since I have installed the Mojave Security Update 2020-002, I do get a message on cold reboot that my Mac Mini 2018 was restarted because of a problem even I shut it down normally.

Switching to Firefox/Chrome resolves the issue. As soon as I open Safari, the shutdown message reappears after cold reboot. Why should a fresh T2 ship resolves the issue?

Having the same issue on Macmini-2018, whenever I put it to sleep or it sleeps itself after being untouched, it restarts in sleep. Don't use Safari at all and Chrome is the default browser...

I have the same problem with my Mac Mini 2018 after Security Update 2020-002 and nothing seems to solve it!

It's now 3 months since Apple are aware of the issue and no solution other than moving to Catalina. It's like if they try to force us to move to their new OS version :-(

Not a solution for me because every day I use some Applications not compatible with Catalina for now.

Apple need to correct their Security Update! it's not suppose to give us problems!!!

Thanks for sharing my Stackexchange question. I can't believe how much time I have spent on debugging this Mac mini issue. It is still worth sharing on various mac forums!

I am kind of surprise on how Apple seems to ignore Mac mini users. They messed up the T2 chip BridgeOS and simply don't care. I guess this bug will never be fixed. Users should rather invest in a new Mac mini model with their latests Apple processor. I am not willing to spent more money on any Mac mini.
