Mac Mini 2018 Kernel panic bug_type 210 after Security Update 2020-002

Hello everyone,

since installing the Mojave Security Update 2020-002 I do get a message that my Mac Mini 2018 was restarted because of a problem even I shut it down normally. The Mac Mini 2018 was running fine for 3 months. The Apple Hardware Check does not show any errors. Also tried to reset SMC and PRAM.

Is this a known bug? Just curios wether Mac mini 2018 users who also installed Apple's Security Update 2020-002 do see the same error message?

The Diagnostic Report reads as follows:

I am pleased to confirm that BridgeOS firmware version 18.16.12561 fixes the Kernel panic bug_type 210 on a Mac mini 2018.

Solution:

Installing Big Sur on a separate volumes updates the BridgeOS firmware version 18.16.12561. When you reboot back into Mojave you do no longer experience the error message on cold reboot. After 7 months Apple finally fixed the issue. Apple never replied on any of my Bug Reports.

Note: Installing Security Update 2020-006 on macOS Mojave 10.4.6 does not fix the Kernel panic bug_type 210. You have to install Big Sur on external drive prior going back to your Mojave installation.

> Can I get a LINK to an original / older version of Mojave OS10.14 that DOES NOT have the "Security Update 2020-002" to use on my 2018 Mac Mini.

That does not fix the problem. Even cleanly installing the macOS 10.14 March 2020 version that did not have the "Security Update 2020-002" did not help (I tried it then) because the problem seems to be the Firmware that it updated. And mere mortals can not downgrade Firmware. There have been about six later Firmware updates but none have yet fixed this sleep/shutdown-cold boot error.

Here is an interesting observation. I didn't have kernel panic issue for many weeks (mac mini with Mojave is in daily use with Chrome open all the time). I opened Safari today for the first time in many weeks as one site had issues on Chrome and left it open accidentally as I went to lunch. I cam back and BAM! - restart from kernel panic. I am starting to agree with those who say this is Safari related...

You're on to something!

I am testing your theory. We've now established that opening Safari is the problem. I shut down Safari and still had the issue re-occur.

I've now reset SMC (just shutting down, unplugging and waiting 15 seconds to plug in and another 5 seconds before turning on). Let's see how long I go on without a kernel panic! Timer starts now! fingers crossed....

I've been following this "problem" since March, and I'm going to discontinue the digest of comments - it's just breaking my heart.

Everything that's currently posting has been tried and failed, either in this topic or one of the others following the security update fiasco.

Until Apple acknowledges that they put out a flawed security update, and offers a fix, we will have these problems. I think that the only "fix" that Apple will eventually offer is for all of us on Mojave to upgrade to Big Sur. WE ARE ALL ON MOJAVE FOR OUR OWN GOOD REASONS AND DESERVE A FIX FOR WHAT APPLE HAS BROKEN!

Signing off, and good luck one-and-all.

Installed the Safari 14 upgrade for Catalina.

This doesn't resolve the kernel panics when going to sleep and resuming the Mac with a YouTube tab opened.

I keep using Firefox which enabled me the 4K playback on YouTube and the 1Password extension back again for those still on 1Password 6 for Mac (for Safari to work you need to upgrade to 1Password 7 which is subscription only).

Very satisfied overall.

Do you guys check memory usage?

I would recommend to check it with a free App like Memory Diag from App Store.

I noticed significant memory usage with Safari, so upgraded memory from 16GB to 32GB.

Now I see 30GB of usage with Safari once in a while (ridiculous size for Web browsing).

I sill have a sleep issue, but no crash with Safari since memory upgrade.

Not a real solution, just a workaround, but I hope this helps.

So on 16th Sept I reset SMC. It was fine for 6 days but today I was hit by kernel panic restart. Haven't used Safari at all :-(

Does it mean the issue is independent of Safari....?

I didn't even put to it to sleep. I simply stepped away for 20 minutes. Stupidly I had not disabled the computer sleep (which happened jointly with screen going off after 20 mins).

FWIW, it NEVER worked for me. I reset SMC, started without running Safari, put to sleep, and immediately got a kernel panic and reboot. It has been that way since the BridgeOS update that caused this problem in the first place.

On the lighter side, I do get a screen now while it's booting rather than the screen being dark while I use the keyboard and hope to log in to the right account. Also, I was able at last to get back into Recovery mode, which hasn't been working since I tried updating BridgeOS by installing Catalina on an external drive, by holding down Option along with Command-R. Option-Command-R brings up the latest recovery drive, and that works while Command-R simply brings up Internet Recovery which eventually fails with error code -1008F (–1008F). Diagnostics still worked... and saw nothing wrong.

An Apple rep told me, when my case was escalated, that it was clearly a BridgeOS problem that they were aware of. Maybe in a year or two they will finally fix it and my computer can sleep again.

I really feel sorry for people with T2 laptops.

Hi everyone,

Just adding that I also have a 2018 Mac mini experiencing this issue. The machine is about 2 weeks old, and running 10.15.7.

{"caused_by":"macos","macos_version":"Mac OS X 10.15.7 (19H2)","os_version":"Bridge OS 4.6 (17P6610)","macos_system_state":"running","incident_id":"14CDF65E-7BC9-4B95-BB25-D6304C292BC7","timestamp":"2020-10-16 18:48:42.00 +0000","bug_type":"210"}

It doesn't seem like there's a definitive fix for this issue yet - I've seen Safari mentioned as a possible cause, but I've had Chrome set as my default browser since I set the machine up. SMC resets have not resolved the issue for me.

I thought the issue might be caused by third party RAM. I still plan on reinstalling the stock RAM this weekend, but I'll also keep an eye on this thread.

Found a Fix for my specific issue ! (Short History and answer below)

I have had this Panic Message upon Start-Up since last February after installing the Security Update & Safare on my Late 2018 Mac Mini using the original Mojave (which I want to keep for my 32bit programs). Too many hours and days with Apple Techs on the phone trouble shooting, and upgrading to Catalina from Mojave. Upon their request I took my 2018 Mini (w/ 128SSD, 8gb, i3) to the Apple Store 14 days ago and left it for a week. They found nothing wrong, but reinstalled Mojave. Still NO Fix !

My specific problem seems to be related to my older USB Mac Keyboard with a Wireless (USB Receiver type) Mouse. I really liked my old extended keyboard, but after getting a New Bluetooth Keyboard and Bluetooth Mouse ... My problem seems to be solved, so far !!!

Hope this helps one of you ...

Running iMac Pro and after installing Mojave security update 005 I have the same problem. “Your computer was shut down because of a problem.” Kernel bridgeos 210.

I did everything apple support suggested and no way to have the computer working normally. (Factory install high sierra, clean mojave, formatting mac, etc).

I have also upgraded to Catalina and I dont see the dialog box crash bridgeos 210 error when I boot the machine but now when booting at around 50-60% the display of the computer is turning off for 2-3 seconds and back on and after that loading catalina.

I will send the computer to apple service so we can see what the real problem is.
