Mac Mini 2018 Kernel panic bug_type 210 after Security Update 2020-002

Hello everyone,

since installing the Mojave Security Update 2020-002 I do get a message that my Mac Mini 2018 was restarted because of a problem even I shut it down normally. The Mac Mini 2018 was running fine for 3 months. The Apple Hardware Check does not show any errors. Also tried to reset SMC and PRAM.

Is this a known bug? Just curios wether Mac mini 2018 users who also installed Apple's Security Update 2020-002 do see the same error message?

The Diagnostic Report reads as follows:

I am pleased to confirm that BridgeOS firmware version 18.16.12561 fixes the Kernel panic bug_type 210 on a Mac mini 2018.

Solution:

Installing Big Sur on a separate volumes updates the BridgeOS firmware version 18.16.12561. When you reboot back into Mojave you do no longer experience the error message on cold reboot. After 7 months Apple finally fixed the issue. Apple never replied on any of my Bug Reports.

Note: Installing Security Update 2020-006 on macOS Mojave 10.4.6 does not fix the Kernel panic bug_type 210. You have to install Big Sur on external drive prior going back to your Mojave installation.

I went through the whole Big Sur install process to an external HDD where I intend to test my current software before maybe updating to Big Sur on my main work disk (I have several bootable backup clones of Mojave if that happens).

But AFAIR initially while still booting the 1st time, the flash drive asked permission for a software update (I guess it noticed the old firmware), took a while to download (?) new, and then applied it while doing some reboots (and a warning about black screen that is issued in firmware updates). Then it rebooted two times to Mojave and the 3rd Option-boot (when I was preparing to set it in the Mojave Startup disk CP) arrived to the actual Big Sur installer window. So I believe the firmware was updated at that point and you could stop there.

Attention Tom & Others,

I am so grateful for your help with this Panic Message crap ! Also, many thanks to all of you, as I'm finally pleased with your solution below for my 2018 Mini. After 8-10 months of dealing with the Genius Bar and Apple Support Techs. on the phone I had NO (0) fix until now.

Wondering if I should now do the latest Mojave updates ( Security Update 2020-006 10.14.6 & Safari 14.0.1 ) on my 2018 Mini and my 2012 MacBook Pro ? I 'm a bit gun shy , to say the least, due to the past Security Update that started this problem.

My Sincere Thanks, Chris B

Hi,

I confirm that starting from external drive (I used a simple usb key, more than 12Gb) ad accepting the message not really clear to update you get your normal startup disk untouched and the firmware updated.

I also used the Security Update 2020-006 10.14.6 & Safari 14.0.1, but I think this is not the fix.

What truly solved the problem is the update of the firmware version.

I hope Apple will release this update of the firmware together with future Security update for Mojave, but I don't know; I also hope Apple will not create such troubles in the future, but who knows...

I had the same problem - kernel panic on my Mac mini 2018.

Dear Tom Binroth, thank you, installing Big Sur closed this problem for me.

But there was a new one - an error message: "INCOMPATIBLE DISK, uses features which are not supported on version of macOS".

I have 2 boot drives - the main 128Gb SSD in the Mac mini, on which I installed Big Sur, the second external 1Tb SSD with Mojave on which I work. The error occurred on it.

Solution:

- create an installation flash drive with Mojave;

- reboot the Mac;

- Command + r, delete and format to APFS the main 128Gb SSD with Big Sur. Mandatory in APFS, this is the only way to install Mojave on a 128Gb SSD.

- restart the Mac, press Alt, choose to install from flash drive and install os Mojave on the main 128Gb SSD.

- install the Mojave, reboot Mac, Command + r and choose startup SSD 1Tb.

- restart the Mac and that's it, no more any errors on my working system.

Apple could have released a regular kernel panic patch for Mojave and Catalina systems, but decided that MAC users should suffer one more time )

Hi Tom and everyone else, thanks for your help. I think I'm almost there...

I am still uncertain about which steps to take after creating the bootable USB drive. Do I need an external drive to install Big Sur as a secondary OS while preserving my current Mojave SSD?

Context: I just put a lot of time into setting up my new 2018 mini that just shipped with Big Sur. I downgraded to Mojave and did SecUp 2020-005 & 006 and still getting the crash reports, kernel panic bug_type 210.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

EDIT: I have iBridge 17.16.16610.0.0,0, (released 9/24/20). Is this the latest update? If so, will this still work for me?

Update: I was able to install firmware update and am now sitting with iBridge: 18.16.12561.0.0,0

To do this, I did not need to install to an external volume at all. I simply created a USB boot installer and Command R booted from it at startup.

Not sure if there are any other glitches yet but will let you all know.

Thanks again for all the info above, everybody.

Hi!

I have already described that on my mini it helps to reset PMC and then not using Safari.

I also upgraded the firmware from Big Sure. Everything is ok with one exception. The update of SU 2020-005 and Safari on 14.01 still breaks many small things, e.g. the mini does not display correctly icons for links to www. Therefore, after the firmware upgrade, I leave Mojave without SU 2020-005, without macOS Suplemental Update and without upgr. Safari 14.01.

This is what my mini looks like.

Matt, you are correct. My mac shipped Big Sur, successfully installed and booted to Mojave. Was running fine except for the kernel crash.

I suspect that the Big Sur firmware upgrade was not available before I made the downgrade.

NOW, it seems to be running perfectly!

Question: Should I install just the Safari 14 Supplemental Upgrade? I'm currently running ver 12.
