iPhone 11 Pro wide angle stopped working

Hi,

Recently my wide angle camera function stopped working and when I open the camera app it automatically pops into 2x and only allows me to zoom out to 1x but not. .5(screen shots below), all options work on video. I’ve updated to latest iOS, restarted phone, closed and reopened camera still know luck. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, I use the wide angle for work all the time.

Cheers Craig

I had this issue. No amount of reset/restoring fixed it. I chatted with apple tech support online. They ran a remote diagnostic. They confirmed there was something wrong. They scheduled an appointment for me at my local Best Buy. The tech there ran the same diagnostic test again... "CAMERA ISSUE REAR CAMERA WIDE ANGLE LENS NOT FUNCTIONING, IS NOT DETECTED IN MRI." The fix was a rear camera replacement, which Best Buy had in stock. It took about 45 minutes. It cost $109. I'm disappointed the camera stopped working after less than 2 years of gentle ownership. However, I am grateful that I did not have to mail the phone in. If reset/restore does not work for you, you will need to get your rear camera replaced. There is no other fix if your camera is not detected. Good luck!

Here’s where I’m at with this ghastly issue. I finally “took care” of it this weekend after doing a “Erase all Settings” and that not working. Additionally, some of my photo modes were gone by now. I don’t remember this being an issue before but there were only four - if I remember right, I think portrait mode and slow-motion were gone.

I called Apple and ran a diagnostics with them. They could “see” that there was an issue with the camera and that it “wasn’t my doing.” I have Apple Care so they sent me a new phone. I have been following this thread for several months and I don’t remember reading anyone on this forum providing the result of their diagnostics with Apple, so I was hopeful. Not too hopeful though.

I did a quick set up without signing in to my Apple ID just to test the camera. All settings and features were present on the camera. I did a factory re-set and did a fast transfer with my current phone. Wide angle lens again, was just gone. Trying literally anything I could before I had to start over like others have said, I downloaded the “ProCamera” app at the advice of another user on here. It’s a one time purchase of $8.99. Immediately hated it because there are ads within it, but whatever.

I went to the native app and the wide angle lens was still not restored. So I was thought, “let’s do a shut down and turn on and hope for the best.” Held my breath and re-started it, and the wide angle lens is now restored. To me the lens seems fuzzy, but I think it’s just my eyes and continuing to be skeptical. The photos seem to turn out okay.

No idea what is going on but this seems pretty shady to me. Why should I have to pay a third party app to get a feature restored on the native camera app that I’ve already paid $1300 or whatever for? Once again, fix it, Apple. :(

Solved

The issue is a BIG goof on Apple's part, I am pretty sure they will do a free fix for you regardless of the warranty. I brought my phone in for a repair (reinstall camera), and the genius destroyed when trying to do so. I guess this is common because even before I gave them my phone, I had to sign a release that stated that in the event of a broken phone, I would be issued a new one. And I was.

So I spoke to the Apple support staff who took me through the process of running a diagnostic on my device. I had the exact same symptoms as you. After I had run the diagnostic I had no camera at all. Not on any app, not even Face ID. The lovely staff member stated that I need to either send my phone to Apple or book it in and drop it off to them to get it fixed (in my particular case it seems to have faulty hardware).

Hi CdD89,

Thanks for posting! I understand you're having some issues with the zoom functions on your iPhone 11 Pro. The wide angle lens is a great feature, and I'll be glad to see how I can assist. It sounds like you've tried some great troubleshooting already.

By any chance, do you have a case on your iPhone? If so, does it help if you remove it?

Also of note, the zoom function is a little different on the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro. Check out the information below to see if it might apply: iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro camera features

"The redesigned Camera interface in iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro shows you what's happening outside of the shot that you're framing. This can help you decide if you need to re-frame your shot or switch to a different camera on your iPhone for a better photo.

When you're using the Wide (1x) camera, the viewfinder also shows what the Ultra Wide (0.5x) camera sees. Tap the .5 button to switch to the Ultra Wide camera. If you have iPhone 11 Pro, you can also see the Wide (1x) view outside of the frame when you're using the Telephoto (2x) camera."

If that doesn't apply, and you're able to determine that an iPhone case isn't a factor, I recommend that you Contact Apple Support next.

Take care.

So I ended up talking with someone at Apple. They were looking at my phone through screen sharing and the guy said that it was a hardware issue and that I would have to wait till the store opens to go in and they will switch my phone out for a new one.. but I guess we’ll see what happens. My Portrait mode doesn’t work either. I can put it in portrait mode but the camera doesn’t blur out the background. My front camera works on portrait mode tho. Soooo weird
