Grainy Image on MacBook Air 2020

Have just purchased a new MacBook Air (2020 model). Have bought to use for home working (Zoom meetings, etc) and the image is really grainy when using Zoom or FaceTime. Is this normal with Macs?

MacBook Air 13", macOS 10.15

i've just taken delivery of my MBA 2020 and the camera image is so terrible I am not sure what to do about the machine now. I paid to have a ton of upgrades so overall this was a £1800 machine. The camera is about the worst i have seen since laptops started coming with in-built cameras. I hope, Apple, you find that damning... but i suspect you won't care. The web is awash with similar complaints. To see someone commenting saying wipe the screen and check your internet connection; it's just offensive. The camera quality is so bad in low light that i can barely even recognise myself. I joined a video call the other night and everyone was commenting about how bad it was, unprompted. I genuinely don't know if I will keep this macbook... i feel like it will be my last, at least, if this is the type of thing we can expect. Apple support were meant to call me back this evening to discuss it but what a surprise, they didn't.

And my blurry grainy camera issues don't end here. I discovered today, that the video recording in Photo Booth does not auto flip, which is further annoying to the core. Even though in the Edit, the auto flip option is clicked, but still it does not. All my old MacBooks are fine but the MacBook Air 2020 M1 has been so annoying and disgusting, don't ask me. Any one, any solution to the flip problem, please helppppppp :(

I have this same issue on my 2019 Mac Air laptop. The quality of the built-in camera is so grainy, far blurrier and grainier than the camera was on my 2014 Mac Air laptop. I am so confused, especially since everyone else seems to have this problem. People have actually pointed the poor quality of my camera out to me. The laptop is otherwise great but I am disappointed in the quality of the camera.

It’s sad that Apple has not responded on this grainy blurry camera problem. If it’s a hardware issue they may have to recall tens of thousands of these laptops. Besides this issue, I have another problem of ‘Auto Flip’ not working in Photo Booth video, despite being enabled in Edit. It’s so annoying that the recorded video plays as inverse mirror image.

What’s wrong with Apple’s quality systems and processes! One hope that someone soon wakes up and resolves these serious issues before it’s too late and people start shifting loyalties…

I purchased my macbook air 2 months ago, and my fiance is incarcerated and We Video Visit and he keeps telling me my picture is extremely grainy, He's the one who told me to get a apple computer. My HP has a better picture then my macbook. When will this get fixed. Spend this kind of money and expect to be able to use all the qualities and we cant.

But I am sure being an apple.com web portal, the content is well read by Apple. So what are they doing about it. The India customer care assure me that Apple is aware of the issue and working on it, maybe the next update could fix the issue. Its weird and all you guys must also check, that the Photo Booth video recording does not auto flip, despite the feature being enabled under the edit tab. This is just ridiculous. I hope we guys are not daydreaming that Apple would come to us with a magic wand and say, here you go, the problem is fixed...lol

But seriously, its becoming more and more frustrating, its nearly 4 months I bought this blooming MBA 2020 with a so called M1, my MBA 2017 was 10x better. Very sad.

So a couple interesting things have played out since I came to this post and tried to fix the issue through talking to customer service. After a failure to fix the issue I attempted to submit a BBB complaint which came back that if it was a hardware issue I am still covered under apple warranty. So I went to an Apple Store, was told to buy an external webcam and basically that my thoughts were invalid.

On my way home I called customer service, who then helped me update my computer which did nothing. He walked me through a few things and said that if they wouldn't work they would accelerate the issue. So the issue did get accelerate to the highest position in customer service who then reached out to engineers. They also said they could not resolve the issue. So the customer service representative offered to purchase a webcam. Apple doesn't sell webcams!! She was surprised when she noticed the incongruence.

The intel based 2020 vs the m1 MacBooks webcam images look completely different despite having the same camera. After being told there was nothing they could do, I called Amazon who I bought the computer through.

Luckily there is one loophole with Amazon, if the manufacturer doesn't honor their warranty Amazon will refund 100% of the costs of the item you purchased. I have bought an M1 MacBook Pro and replaced my i5 MacBook Air and the webcam images are a night and day difference. Apple customer service were sweet over the phone, but not helpful. Amazon really was helpful, generous, and I will never purchase anything directly from Apple again.

@tim_cook 1/2 T#0019 Today I step out of my teens! But my MBA 2020 M1 continues to be a laggard with blurry grainy camera. I understand in the Apple community that this grave matter is still eluding you with Zero resolution. How tough to believe why Apple gave commercial sign off for its

2/2 production. I’m aghast at the quality process & controls at Apple, how did M1 get a commercial sign off? Seriously are you aware or is it just a time pass testing the customers patience? May I ask you again to recall and replace my MBA? Or does it go under the hammer. Help me Tim

I have purchased a new MacBook Air 2022, to replace a MacBook Air from 2015. Not that the older MacBook had to be replaced, because it still works great. I just wanted a new MacBook. The quality of the webcam in the new MacBook Air is bad, compared to the older one. It's painful! Imagine Steve Jobs getting a new MacBook Air and calling loved ones! He must be turning around in tech-haven now. He is missed as he made sure only superior quality products were sold! Shame!

So the hardware on the intel 2020 and the M1 2020 MacBooks are the same. The difference is that the intel does not process the image and instead is giving you the raw image. The image in the M1 is vibrant, rich, but still a bit grainy. They are coming out with a MacBook this winter that will have a 1080P camera. The issue with the warranty is that they sold the product with a camera that doesn’t fulfill expectations and really advertising BUT the hardware has no issues. It really is a shame, but there isn’t anything they can do. Amazon fulfilled my request for a warranty return because Apple didn’t fulfill their part of the warranty.

Ok, I'll try this again since Apple removed the last one for this reason: "We’ve removed your post Grainy Image on MacBook Air 2020 because it contained either feedback or a feature request that were not constructive." Apparently you can't say the word that is defined as "an expression of disappointment". You people are unbelievable. I would like to know if any progress has been made, has Apple taken any responsibility at all for the horrible quality of the camera not he MBA 2020? It is still practically unusable unless I'm sitting in bright, direct light.

Last year I bought the 2020 MBA for Christmas.

Amazing machine, however the camera image is extremely blurry and I have had this problem for almost a year now.

Is there any progress when it comes to fixing this matter?

I am not able to buy myself a new laptop and I am currently working from home, like everyone else.

People in FaceTime or zoom meetings can hardly see me and it makes me mad.

Especially since the fact that I bought the new MBA since I wil be working from home the coming years, I guess.

So Apple, are you working on a solution?

If not, please provide me with some help, since I don't know what to do anymore

This will most likely never be repaired to anyone's satisfaction. The camera hardware is very poor quality. I recently purchased a Logitech 920s and I'm very happy with it. I sure do wish I could have used the integrated camera, though. While the 920s is an awesome webcam, I'm not crazy about having to use an external one.
