Messages Notifications Not Working Intermittently on Apple Watch

Hello. I have a difficult issue to isolate and duplicate....hoping someone here has some insight. Apple Watch Series 5 40mm LTE + iPhone 11 Pro.

Intermittently, notifications from Messages do not come thru, appear, or have haptic feedback on my Apple Watch. Pulling down to get to the notifications screen also does not show them, even though my iPhone will show I received one. Restarting will fix the issue for a few hours to a few days, before it reappears. If I do not restart, it will also resolve on its own before it reappears again. This has happened on iOS 13.4 and 13.4.1, along with watchOS 6.2 and 6.2.1. Each time it happens, I have been within close proximity to my iPhone.

Here's what I have tried with no luck:

(1) Ensure Do Not Disturb is not on for both the iPhone and Apple Watch

(2) Ensure the Message thread is not muted.

(3) Messages notifications on Apple Watch have been set to both Mirror my iPhone, and Custom...both result in this bug.

(4) Unpaired and repaired Apple Watch

(5) Reset all settings on iPhone.

(6) Upgraded to 13.4.1 and 6.2.1. (The issue first appeared on 13.4 and 6.2)

I've been pretty sharp in the past at finding some workaround or solution to pesky problems like this, but this one has me stumped. The key difficulty is that it is intermittent, and will temporarily resolve on its own or with a watch / phone restart. I haven't contacted support yet, as I was hoping a sharp user may have run across this and has a solution I'm overlooking.

Thanks for any help!

Hello,

I have the Apple watch series 5 (watch os 6.2.1) and iphone 11 pro max (ios 13.4.1) and I have a quite similar problem as you have described. I get notified by my apple watch with a vibration for a incoming message, just the red notification dot in the always on display mode does not appear or appears very delayed. :-) Apple support told me to wait for the next watchos or ios update (next release date is uknown). I need to admit, for such a expansive equipment near 2000 Dollars, the quality and the support is very poor. I'm very disappointed. Or with other words, you are not alone. :-(

At the moment I do not wear my Apple watch, because in this state I'm better without the fully misleading notification Apple watch.

Best regards

David

Hi I confused

The problem I'm facing with, is a expected Apple behavior.

Is that what they told you and then blow you off about our problem? Did they give up on us If they did post everything you got from Apple everywhere you can use my replies I don't care. I am going to wait for the new Phone and watch but they better work. Please get back to me. With more info

Sorry you are going through that. Brian

Hi Brian,

yes, basically they say its not a problem, but a expected behavior. In my case Apple will not offer any solutions anymore. Its just what they are saying. I will now check this statement by law ways. Especially now I'm looking for Apple Watch Series 5 which are working probably.

In my case, I can not offer you here any solution, for which we were all waiting for. :-(

Interesting to read your comments. I have an 11 pro max (new in December) and a brand new series 5 watch, purchased yesterday. My watch doesn’t work at all. I’ve followed everything and all settings are correct. I’d say it will work as soon as it syncs and after 2 minutes all notifications go to phone. Tried resetting three times. The only time my watch gets a iMessage or Facebook messenger notification is if I’m actively using that on my watch - every other time goes to my phone. It’s like they’re working backwards. I’ll be going to my nearest Apple store to try and get this sorted :(

I have an iPhone XR and an Apple Watch series 4 without cellular. I don’t always get my text message notifications...probably 50% or less! My daughter also has an iPhone XR and Apple Watch series 4 with cellular. We switched watches and I am still having the issue...she isn’t. I’m wondering if it is a phone issue? Our phones at ATT also.

I am having the same problem with both my apple watch 4 and 5 Gps. I don’t receive notifications for text messages If I restart the phone and watch it sometimes corrects it. I find that I have to put my passcode in immediately when the watch turns on or I won’t receive notifications. This all started after an update about 3 updates ago. I am using an Iphone 11

Please do let us know what happens when you receive your 6. I am on a series 4 via an iPhone 11 Pro, had an 11 previously and it did it on both phones it is drives me absolutely crazy. It worked very well when it was paired to my Xs on ios 12 and watch os 5 I’m am due to buy an Apple Watch 6 but I am very sceptical. I thought iOS 14 and watch os 7 would solve it but it’s even worse. Getting to the point now where I am considering not bothering with the watch.

I have got that frustrated I have solved the problem myself. Sold my series 4 and just going to roll my 11 pro solo. Watch is an expensive piece of glass and metal as that all it is to me if I am not getting notifications all the time. It is definitely a software fault that effects a small number of people. I think it will depend on what series watch you have, combined with what phone and how you configure it. I have tried everything. Borrowed different watches, borrowed different phones, used older phones. Absolutely nothing works. 80% of the time all works fine. But I find when you get complacent I will then look at my iPhone to find a message I received hours ago which the watch has swallowed. No thanks I’m done with the watch. (P.s it worked fine on iOS 12 watch os 5 iPhone XS)

Hi update I bought 2 iWatch 6 for my wife and I. And knock on wood they are working perfect. I don't know if it was the update or the new watch. But I haven't missed a text. I will state the notifications are louder and vibrate harder in the new watch. But I know that wasn't my problem with the old watch3. Please tell me if the update worked as i'm curious to know. I needed the new watch for health reasons. But Apple should have fixed the problem a long time ago. Good luck and stay safe in this mess. Brian

Thanks Brian, let us know if you have any problems. I think I’m still just going to use the iPhone on it’s own for now as I never use the health features. If you don’t get any problems I may get a 6 later in the year. Notifications are the sole purpose for me as then I can leave iPhone in pocket or anywhere in house.

@everyone

i think I found a solution... sort of.

i just read this whole thread and have been battling with Apple for the last week to figure out why my notifications aren’t working on my new series 6 watch. I have an iPhone XS Max (not that I think it matters at this point)

they had me try every possible thing under the moon to get this working... I mean everything that’s been mentioned in this thread. This is what I’ve finally found that SEEMS to be working so far.

Turn off “cover to mute” (not sure that this is causing it)

Turn off “wrist detection” (when this is on my notifications don’t work)

I hope this info helps makes someone’s day.

Thank you for the info, that would probably make sense as a lot of the time my watch would do half a buzz while I was moving my wrist. Other times it would work perfect. And then sometimes it would swallow the text and you could only find it your phone. So irritating m. I have since given up on the watch. My watch is 2 years old and luckily I haven’t purchased a series 6. They are fantastic things but unfortunately it has put me off. It’s not just Apple when I had galaxy’s the watches did quirky things as well. So from now on it’s just me and my iPhone 11 pro 😆

Hi I bought 2 i watch6's and so far they have worked perfectly. One for me and one for my wife! They haven't missed a text and worked flawlessly. When I had my iWatch3, I found that shutting the Bluetooth off on the watch or iPhone11 pro-max worked. Then both the phone and the watch would respond to the text. The negative side of doing that was when you read the text on one of them, The other would still report it as a new text. Try turning off Bluetooth on one or both and try that. Hope this information helps. Good luck and stay safe.
