Messages Notifications Not Working Intermittently on Apple Watch

Hello. I have a difficult issue to isolate and duplicate....hoping someone here has some insight. Apple Watch Series 5 40mm LTE + iPhone 11 Pro.

Intermittently, notifications from Messages do not come thru, appear, or have haptic feedback on my Apple Watch. Pulling down to get to the notifications screen also does not show them, even though my iPhone will show I received one. Restarting will fix the issue for a few hours to a few days, before it reappears. If I do not restart, it will also resolve on its own before it reappears again. This has happened on iOS 13.4 and 13.4.1, along with watchOS 6.2 and 6.2.1. Each time it happens, I have been within close proximity to my iPhone.

Here's what I have tried with no luck:

(1) Ensure Do Not Disturb is not on for both the iPhone and Apple Watch

(2) Ensure the Message thread is not muted.

(3) Messages notifications on Apple Watch have been set to both Mirror my iPhone, and Custom...both result in this bug.

(4) Unpaired and repaired Apple Watch

(5) Reset all settings on iPhone.

(6) Upgraded to 13.4.1 and 6.2.1. (The issue first appeared on 13.4 and 6.2)

I've been pretty sharp in the past at finding some workaround or solution to pesky problems like this, but this one has me stumped. The key difficulty is that it is intermittent, and will temporarily resolve on its own or with a watch / phone restart. I haven't contacted support yet, as I was hoping a sharp user may have run across this and has a solution I'm overlooking.

Thanks for any help!

Hello,

I have the Apple watch series 5 (watch os 6.2.1) and iphone 11 pro max (ios 13.4.1) and I have a quite similar problem as you have described. I get notified by my apple watch with a vibration for a incoming message, just the red notification dot in the always on display mode does not appear or appears very delayed. :-) Apple support told me to wait for the next watchos or ios update (next release date is uknown). I need to admit, for such a expansive equipment near 2000 Dollars, the quality and the support is very poor. I'm very disappointed. Or with other words, you are not alone. :-(

At the moment I do not wear my Apple watch, because in this state I'm better without the fully misleading notification Apple watch.

Best regards

David

Hi just found something I just signed into messages for the first time on my MacBook Pro and stayed signed in and I missed a few texts on my iWatch6. But I was on the laptop at that time. When I found that happened I freaked out for a second but remembered that I opened messages on my Mac. I went and signed out of messages and texted my wife and a few friends and the watch worked fine. I thought about you guys and came here to tell you what I found. Check you Macs and iPads and make sure you are singed out of messages. Hope that helps some of you. Stay safe Brian

I found that too, it’s even worse if you sign into iPad, but to honest no matter what I do since watch iOS 6 and iOS 13 the watch will miss a text randomly. It can be as little as a couple of times a weeks. It’s always when I need to see the text as well. Since putting the watch away I have also noticed while your on the phone you phone doesn’t even notify of a text on iOS 14 and this is every time so presumably it’s deliberate. This is probably a feature but you should be able to turn it off. Apple is pushing me more and more towards android everyday, their software is just getting awful 😔 and a move to android would be an absolutely nuclear ☢️ option so going to wait a few months and hope to go it improves.

Can I just add when I say you don’t get a notification when you one the phone this is speaking on the phone holding it to your ear or using air pods not if your doing other tasks on it. On speaker phone it will pop on the screen but still be a silent notification

Well here's an update. I went nuclear. Got sick to death of bugs that have been around since ios 13. Sold the iphone bought a one plus 8 pro for nearly half the money. No bugs no notification issues watch or volume issues. One happy chappy. I hope you guys don't experience any problems and that they get sorted but after dealing with none solved issues for over a year it just got too much considering it was a £1050 phone.

UPDATE for anyone out there still dealing with this issue. What fixed this for me was doing the following:

On your iPhone Go to Settings -> Messages -> Send & Receive

Make sure that you have enabled receive messages from your iCloud account.

Once this is enabled you will get some notifications on your other apple devices that an apple watch has been setup to receive messages and that should correct the issues.

None of what had been suggested in this thread had worked for me until the very last message from carbon_based_l1fe, but with a twist. All of the numbers/addresses listed under Send & Receive had a check mark next to them, but what I did was go thru and uncheck and re-check each one. After that, it started working like a charm and the text notifications began to come thru to my Apple Watch once again.

I have apple watch 4 and I buy recently Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max.

Before I use an old IPHONE 7 Plus and all works great.

On my old Iphone 7 plus paired with my apple watch 4 all notifications works as expected on both watch and iphone at the same time but after I update to Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max I cannot receive anymore my notifications on both like before.

I only can receive my notifications when I disconnect my Bluetooth but this is not an option because I have other accessories that need Bluetooth.

Please Apple fix this, there is a lot but a lot of people with this problem and is clear this is a software bug because my Apple Watch 4 and my iphone 7 plus using today last firmware and IOS 14, both are working with notifications without any problem.

Only my new Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max and my Apple Watch 4 serie are experimenting this notifications problems when Bluetooth are turned on.

I want to have the option to receive my notifications on both Apple Watch and IPHONE at the same time.

APPLE please fix this for us.

Best regards,

I have had the same problem for a long time, same Apple watch series 3 but different phones from my company. We also use AT&T as our carrier. I notice the problem most often after I put the watch back on and unlock it, usually this is when I don't see text notifications or the texts themselves on my watch. I have found that if I turn on airplane mode for a few seconds and then turn it off I will get the notifications and texts on my watch.

I've had this problem for months. Even though I have the watch set to mirror the phone my watch does not always get the message. I do understand that when the iPhone screen is live, the messages only show up on the phone. My problem occurs intermittently when the phone is locked (screen is dark).

Would the Wi-Fi environment have anything to do with this? I am on a mesh network, the watch (4) is at 2.4 MHz and the phone (11 pro) at 5 MHz.

Try this - go to settings, Sounds and Haptics, and check to see if you have a tone set for "text tone". My wife and I were having this issue and going crazy trying to figure it out. We both have Apple Watch 5 / iPhone 12 Pro and could not get text haptic or sound alerts on watch. Once a 'text tone' was selected, it worked with both sound and for haptic only after that. Apologies if this has already been posted and did not work for some, but it worked for us.
