macbook pro camera requiring apps crash

I've a MacBook Pro(13 inch mid 2012)

I was using it on Yosemite since the purchase. All of a sudden all the apps requiring the inbuilt camera have stopped working. On trying to open, the apps crash and i get the error saying the app quit unexpectedly. I tried upgrading it to El Capitan but the problem persists.

I would like to know if there's any way to fix this apart from upgrading to Catalina. The links for Mojave, High Sierra sent by apple support after discusiing the problem on call don't work.

I'm posting below the detailed problem copied from the "app quit unexpectedly" box.

Thanking you in advance! :)

Hello, djparth2410.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

I understand whenever an app uses your camera it crashes. I'd like to help. I would see if the same thing occurs in a test user account and safe mode. This can help narrow down the issue:

How to use safe mode on your Mac

How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac

Does the same thing occur with FaceTime?

Keep me updated.

Cheers!

Hello, djparth2410.

Thank you for getting back to us here in Communities and providing an update. Were you able to try with a test user account as well? We want to try to rule out software being the issue. See if resetting the permissions help: Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder

I'd also suggest running hardware diagnostics: How to use Apple Diagnostics on your Mac

Finally, you can run disk repair as well: Repair a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers!

Hello Joseph_S,

thanks for the reply. As soon as this problem occurred i had contacted apple support and we did screen sharing and did both the trouble shooting methods that you have mentioned. The problem persisted in safe mode as well so i was advised to take a backup before upgrading to a newer version. I have taken the backup and upgraded from Yosemite to El Capitan.

The problem occurs with FaceTime, Photo Booth, Skype, entire Browser if faceboook video call is tried as well as the app Pioneer Rekordbox which is used to play music mostly.

When i contacted apple support the second time to get the link for Mojave the screen sharing didn't work as well for some reason.

I hope you can help me resolve the issue.

Cheers!

Hello Joseph_S,

as per your suggestion I've tried all the 3 options you suggested but still problem persists.

First I tried to repair storage device with disk utility as it seemed least complicated.

Secondly on trying to reset permissions I was not prompted to enter any firmware password.

The ''repairHomePermissions'' command turns out to be invalid/unknown (I don't remember exactly what word it was but it didn't work) Since that didn't work I didn't reinstall macOS.

Lastly I tried apple Diagnostics twice. First time normal test and second time extended test. Both times there was no problem found.

Still the apps quit unexpectedly. What else can i try? Really need to get these Apps working.

Cheers!
