New LG CX OLED with flashing line at bottom of screen when watching content on inbuilt Apple TV app

Hi, really not sure where this question should go, however I have a brand new LG CX65 OLED tv.

I was watching Bad Boys for Life in 4k last night streamed from the inbuilt Apple TV app. All through the movie, intermittently, there was an annoying flashing coloured line along the bottom of the screen. I have found other people complaining of the same thing on Reddit and it “seems” to be an Apple issue.

Is there any way to report this to Apple for a fix? I haven’t seen the issue on any other source (Disney, Netflix, Google Play, free to air sources)

Here’s a shot of a red line and another of a white line, in dark scenes it’s really distracting.

any comments or suggestions welcome, thanks

Unfortunately, you are wrong. The Apple TV 4K box has an issue two issues in fact. One specifically for LGC9 and CX models..... Stop reading now if you don’t want a headache Lol!!

The problem with the Apple TV box with an LGC9 or CX model is you get raised black levels when watching Dolby Vision content. You have to lower your brightness down to 49 or 48 however, by doing this you do lose a bit of shadow detail. The other problem that’s universal for all TVs is that the Apple TV 4K box does not produce 24P correctly.

using the internal Apple TV app solves all those problems however you now get a flashing line! lol it’s crazy I know.

Agree with raised black levels on Apple TV 4K which doesn’t look good. Furthermore, Atmos on the Netflix app doesn’t work properly either and the channels keep getting mixed up (i.e. speech from centre suddenly and randomly comes through rears intermittently).

My next solution was to buy an Amazon Fire Cube. Everything works, but The Apple TV app doesn’t support Atmos yet. Is such a frustrating situation.

Tried the ‘Just Scan’ option too on LG and doesn’t fix the line issue.

Agree with the Netflix app on the Apple TV 4K box!!! I forgot why I watch Netflix on the LG internal app lol.

Yes, for my ATMOS setup for some reason the center channel audio hits to the rear speakers when using the Netflix app on the Apple TV 4K box.

So that’s not 1 or 2 BUT 3!!!.......issues with the Apple TV box.

I just wanted to update you all that I opened another case with Apple support and this time I think we are going to get somewhere!!

I spoke to a gentleman named Scott who is a senior level engineer. He asked me to take several clips of the phenomenon (the flashing line). And I submitted the files to him. He’s going to work with LG and other engineers and will be giving me a follow up call in five days.

fingers crossed this will lead to a permanent fix. Because they just updated the app with Dolby Atmos surround sound so if they could just fix this problem the app will be perfect

Well I’ll be ****, I just verified this. You’re right! This has to be either an LG issue or maybe worse. It could be a studio issue. They could have provided a faulty digital file that only effects the LG C9? I’m at a loss now because I had only seen this issue with Apple TV app. Never Netflix or Amazon Prime. I wonder where Amazon is letting you stream that movie? I wonder if they are redirecting you to an Apple server.

I noticed some other strange behaviour while watching The Morning Show on Apple TV+.

I’m on episode 4 and every episode so far the screen is filled but people on screen look stretched vertically. The aspect ratio on my C9 is set to Original. If I change the aspect to 16:9 the picture remains the same but when I change back to Original aspect I get small black bars top and bottom and the picture looks correct and no longer looks stretched vertically. It’s like the tv doesn’t apply the correct aspect ratio unless I change it then go back to Original. I’ve not had Apple TV+ long enough to test if this happens on other programmes.

Yes I’ve noticed the vertical stretching since the last update - happens on See too, alongside AppleTV+ trailers / ads before you watch a new series.

I find simply exiting, then going back in fixes it temporarily (don’t need to adjust any settings).

The implementation of the AppleTV app on LG Oleds just seems riddled with bugs, though oddly works fine about 50% of the time.

My strategy now is if I use AppleTV, try the LG app in the first instance and hope for the best. If I’m getting issues, then switch to the AppleTV 4K and just put up with any raised black levels which seems more of an issue on Netflix than on AppleTV content. I don’t no why this is, or whether I’m mistaken.

As a side note, going back to See on AppleTV, I notice the flashing line on the first episode, but not the last - is bizarre.

Hello everybody, I just got a call from Scott a senior level engineer who is on top of this issue. That’s the good news. The bad news is, he did not have a solid update on the problem. He informed me that higher level engineers are still looking at the issue and working toward a fix.

he will be giving me another follow-up call next week or sooner if a fix is in the works. I didn’t wanna mention to him that the Amazon prime app has the problem with Dunkirk the movie. The way I see it is, if they’re willing to work directly with LG engineers LG can then figure out a fix. If I tell them another app displays the problem Apple will just drop this case immediately. Honestly besides Dunkirk I had not experienced a flashing line on an Amazon prime movie in any type of format whether it be HDR or SDR.

If I recall correctly, there is something back to front with the Just Scan setting, where turning it ON, actually turns it (The overscan) off (or something like that, I read it on AVS forum and it seemed counterintuitive).

Interesting observation, I updated my CX to V3.10.20 the other day. Going through the menu noticed that Just Scan now has 3 options - Auto, On, Off. Not sure what Auto actually does, but don’t remember seeing it previously.

I’ve still only ever seen the issue on the one Bad Boys movie and have been watching a heap of Netflix, Disney + and Prime on the TV, as well as other HDMI sources including ATV 4k etc.

The Just Scan setting adjustment definitely isn’t a fix, watch See on AppleTV - flashing line is still evident a couple of minutes into the first episode no matter what Just Scan setting is selected.

I think the Just Scan setting adjustment on content displayed at 16:9 will hide the line by cropping the display slightly, though anything with black bars to the top and bottom of the screen cannot be masked as no amount of zooming / cropping will fix that.

I do see the flashing line in See around the 4-5 minute mark.

However changing Just Scan (Aspect ratio set to Original) to OFF makes the line go away.

interestingly, despite Just Scan having settings of On, Off and Auto elsewhere, in the ATV app, it is only On or Off.

BTW, watching the same scene from See on an ATV 4k (Same CX65) does not show the flashing line regardless of Just Scan setting.

UPDATE: Scott (Senior Engineer) called me back today to give me an update.

He said that the engineers could not see the problem clearly from the pictures and video footage I took. Scott, found this odd as he can clearly see the issue from what I sent him. So, he asked me to retake pictures and video but this time start the video up far back and slowly zoom my way in. By doing this I verified that the problem is the bottom right pixel of the letterbox. Anytime that corner hits a light color or bright white pixel it creates that line.

Anyway, I retook the footage and he took down more of my information like the LG C9 serial number, Device ID, Dolby Vision Version, Webos Version. He also had me take screen shots of the Apple TV+ about screen to show what version I am using. He also had me take a screenshot of the analytics its picked up (turned it on during our first call, send report to apple).

Thats about it.......

I am hoping the new footage will clearly show their top level engineers what the problem is.

So I just got an LG CX. I don’t have the colored line issue, but every single show I watch from the built in AppleTV app starts the aspect ratio as 16:9 even though the picture setting is set to “original”. The image fills the screen stretching it slightly when it shouldn’t.

If I toggle it to 16:9 and then back to original it is fixed. Try this out and see if it fixes your colored line issue.

I have to do it every single episode of every show/movie from AppleTV app...
